The Dark Knight/Mad Hatter series

Issue 18: Normally I don't read Batman comic but this one has the tag 'The Birth of the Mad Hatter' so I decided to get it and see what it was like.

The Batman gets attacked briefly by the Mad Hatter than a short time later runs into Catwoman. Then the Mad Hatter is talking to his henchmen, and then the story goes into the past where a young boy is short for his age and it looks like he will always be. He goes to see a woman named Alice Dee who is not at all what he expected so, being mad, he kills her. Apparently he is trying in effect to capture something that happened in the past and refuses to accept that time moves on and things change.

Issue 19:There's some background history given of Jervis/Mad Hatter and it shows how certain drugs made his condition worse. Batman is shown having a woman that he is in love with/and has sex with. The Hatter has many people under his control and he's not hesitant about killing them all.

Issue 20: It is noted that Batman is willing to give up his crime fighting for the love of Natalya. The Mad Hatter, though, is growing ever more insane. He kidnaps Natalya and tortures her, trying to find out Batman's identity. This doesn't end well.

Issue 21: Batman is out for vengeance and is totally focused on that one thing. He goes to confront the Mad Hatter but the Hatter uses some kind of psychedelic-inducing drug on him. He nearly beats the Hatter to death, his anger is that great. It seems a number of comics are using various characters from Alice in Wonderland but making them fowl and twisted. There is no innocence in these characters; they are out to hurt people and kill them if they choose to. This is a weakness in all the comics who do this because the Wonderland characters they use, since they are so far removed from the way they are in the actual story, could very easily be dropped and a typical thug-type used in their place.
