New Adventures of Alice
 |
This is a book that was originally issued in 1917. The author of the book decided to use the Alice character from Alice in Wonderland and put her into a situation where she gets to interact with various characters from the Mother Goose rhymes.
There are black-and-white drawings that are done in the same style as the originals; there are also color drawings that are beautifully done and again appear in the older style. The main character is Betsy, a young girl who wanted more Alice books and one day finds one in her attic. She falls asleep and ends up in the book as Alice.
Although there are many characters, the Poet seems to be the second most important, and the Snipe is just behind him. It's obvious to the reader that she is dreaming, of course, because she goes from place to place sometimes without any link between the two just as in dreams, but such books as these we already know are dreams and we just take that for granted and enjoy what else is going on.
The book makes sense from the viewpoint of Alice and Mother Goose backgrounds and, as such, is enjoyable. There are no deeper, hidden meanings, just plain odd an fascinating adventures.
