The woman is the maid. The guy is Mr. McCloud.
The other woman is his sister.
It's revealed that Annette is McCloud's brother, but that the two of them had a major argument some eighteen years before and had never communicated since. There was a letter from his wife that explained Annette's presence, but McCloud had not opened the letter yet. He wants to send Annette to a boarding school.
