I. INTRODUCTION

The following material consists of my thoughts and speculations on the movie The Dark Crystal. The original movie is, of course, copyright Henson Associates. This work is not meant to be anything but a tribute to that movie and their effort in its production. Most of the photos in this book I took, although some were from another source and are credited.

Please understand that I do not have all the Dark Crystal memorabilia by any means. This book contains all that I could find, but it does not include pictures of some items, and there are going to be items, particularly from other countries, that I might not even know about. I also do not have any of the original costumes or creatures from the story. This is the best I can come up with, combining what I can find as far as merchandise goes with my own analysis of the movie plus some other references and items like fanzines.

II. OVERVIEW OF THE BOOK AND MOVIE

Let's start off with some of the main points of the movie:

1. A planet named Thra circles a triple-sun system. The planet is within a habitable zone for life.

2. There is a great variety of life on the planet. The Podlings and the Gelfling are both humanoid in general structure.

3. There is a person called Aughra who is half-mystic, half-scientist, and who can be a little eccentric. Her origin is unknown.

4. There is a Great Crystal that is somehow tied in to the welfare of the planet (via ley lines, possibly.)

5. At some time in the past alien visitors arrived and, basically, screwed everything up. They split into beings who were nearly pure good and nearly pure evil. The evil Skeksis waged war both the Podlings and the Gelfling who they captured and drained of something called 'life essence,' which is a life-prolonging potion. This is similar in a way to what happened in the Star Trek episode The Enemy Within, where Kirk was split into a powerful side and a weakling side.

6. Someone in the past carved a prophecy telling about two Gelfling who would heal the Great Crystal. If they failed, no one would be able to heal it.

7. Jen survived a Garthim attack and was taken in and raised by the urRu, the good beings. Kira was taken in by the Podlings after a similar Garthim attack and was raised by them. Neither knew the other existed until the events of the movie.

8. Jen is sent out by the urRu to find Aughra and the missing shard that could be used to heal the crystal. After he gets the shard he meets Kira, and they go to a podling village where they are driven out by a Garthim attack. The chamberlain, one of the Skeksis, has been kicked out and sees the Gelfling as a ticket back to the inner circle.

9. Jen and Kira eventually reach the castle with the Chamberlain seeming to know their every move. He reveals his true nature, tries to kill Jen and captures Kira.

10. Jen lives and gets to the crystal while Kira dies trying to get him the shard. The urRu arrive and meld with the Skeksis, returning to the alien urSkek form. They leave after bringing Kira back to life.

11.So you have a story involving a Great Quest, involving the hero having to face almost insurmountable odds to accomplish the quest. It appears he will fail but, at the very end, he succeeds.

12.This is definitely in the grand myth tradition noted by Joseph Campbell.

13. Bringing the Great Quest up-to-date, though, Kira is added to represent female strength and she, too, risks all to save the world from evil. In the end the world is saved and evil is overcome.

The book was also printed in other languages, including French, Spanish and German. These are not easy to find. The French book lacks the photographs that are in the English version of the book.

My Thoughts on the Movie Itself

The movie had various themes to it. One was the theme that each individual person (the Urskeks representing human beings in a way) has both good and evil in them, and that, like in the Star Trek episode The Enemy Within, it takes both to make us whole and functional. We work to do good and to control our own dark impulses and the vast majority of people succeed.

Then, in the Skekeis and the Mystics, we see the result of pure good and pure evil in beings. The mystics were pure good but were also ineffectual. They apparently did not make any effort to stop the Skeksis from their reign of terror. They rescued Jen, yes, but that was only after an attack had taken place. They had a thousand years to come up with some way to at least control the Skeksis or to neutralize them, but they did nothing.

They seemed to base everything on the prophecy of the crystal being healed by a Gelfling, although they didn't seem to pay much attention to the 'or else by one' phrase that implied that the world would remain under Skeksis control perhaps forever if a Gelfling, who had been eradicated down to a population of two, did not solve the problems the mystics had not even worked on.

The Skeksis were pure evil but they were too reliant on their technology, including the Crystal Bats, the Garthim, and the device to drain the essence from the Gelfing and the Podlings. This made them vulnerable and Jen and Kira were able to enter the castle through an unguarded entrance. If the Chamberlain hadn't been playing his game then no one would have detected them and they would have healed the crystal without Kira being killed in the process.

So pure evil and pure good just don't work. Not in the 'real' world.

In a way this is the Joseph Campbell-type mythological story of someone setting out alone against impossible odds to accomplish a task set for him by others. He meets Kira and others along the way but, in the end, it is just Jen and Kira against the might of the Skeksis. Jen succeeds in his task, but at the price of Kira being killed. Her being killed not only meant he lost his companion, but the entire future of the Gelfling was destroyed since there were no longer any females to mate with and produce offspring. (A problem which I worked a way around in my own fiction stories by assuming that other Gelfling had survived but on another continent which was beyond the reach of the Skeksis and their minions.)

So, in the end, Kira is brought back to life which helps ensure the continuation of the Gelfling race, but at the same time pretty much neutralizes the 'great price' that the hero had to pay to complete his task.

One of the problems that Aughra and the Mystics faced was a way to do away with the Skeksis but at the same time healing the crystal. (This refers to the time before the finding of Jen) They could not leave the crystal as it was because that was damaging the planet. If some way had been found that the Mystics could have waged some kind of kamakaze attack on the Skeksis and all of both groups died, that still would have left the matter of getting the right crystal shard into the crystal and Aughra admitted in the movie she did not know which shard was the fight one.

She would have had to try every single shard piece she had, and that's assuming she could find a way to get to the point in the crystal where the shard would be inserted. In our world that would simply have taken the construction of some structure that would have bridged the shaft the crystal stood above that a person could have safely climbed and taken their time inserting the crystal. Such construction did not seem to be within the technological level of the beings that were left. Aughra's observatory had been built by the Urskeks, and the Podlings had only a very primitive level of technology.

So it boils down to the point that someone else, Jen and Kira, would be called upon to do what no one else had the inclination (Mystics) or the technological ability (Aughra) to get accomplished, and that is what they did.

This is what makes the story good. The two Gelfling manage to accomplish what no one else was able or willing to accomplish. Their own histories were filled with terrible emotional tragedy and their future was nebulous at best. They only had each other and both realized that they must not fail in the mission set before them, that being the healing of the crystal. They were willing to put their lives on the line so everyone else in the world and the world itself could be saved.

There is also the understood love theme between Jen and Kira which develops as the story moves along.

DVD extras

One of the advantages of buying anniversary editions of movies is that there is often a lot of good extra material added. The Dark Crystal has a whole lot of extras, not counting the fact that the case itself is 3-D in appearance and is done very well.

Extra 1:The World of the Dark Crystal

57 minutes long. Scenes include painting a garthim, getting a guy into a landstrider outfit and then it shows the filming of the battle between the garthim and the landstriders. Then it moves on to Jim Henson talking about what he wanted to do with the film. Then it goes into how Brian Froud came up with character designs for the movie.

The film goes on to show many scenes of early designs, how individual creatures and scenes were actually built, various problems encountered and so on covering a wealth of informative detail. To me the most stunning part of the film is showing how they did the scene involving the filth from the Crystal Castle coming off.

Extra 2: Reflections of The Dark Crystal: Light on the Path of Creation

This extra is twenty minutes long. First off it shows some fascinating test footage with both Jen and a mystic, but neither of them in their final physical form. Then there's even more test footage. Then it examines the story from the viewpoint of it's being a story about good and evil in all of us.

Brian Froud talks about his use of geometry to show how everything in the Dark Crystal world is linked together. He talks about how the Mystics had purged themselves of all dark impulses, but that left them without any urge to really act and change things. He then talks about the Skeksis and how the easiest way to deal with them for the movie was to give each one of them a job. For example, you had a scientist, a gourmand, and a warrior.

One of the test footage sections shows an earlier version of both Jen and Kira. This was when they were less human-looking than the final version used.

Extra 3: Shard of Illusion

This section is a little over sixteen minutes long. There is more test footage in this section. There is even one bit of test footage that uses one of the oldest designs for Jen which makes him look more animal-like. There's a lot of praise of Jim Henson in this section, and a lot of emphasis on spirituality.

Extra 4: Extra (deleted) Scenes

This section includes deleted funeral scenes and the Skeksis original language work print scenes. The funeral scene section is about three-and-a-half minutes long. This includes both the funeral scene for the Skeksis emperor, and the funeral scene among the urRu for Jen's master. Then the work print scenes include seven sections.

Collector's Edition

Sometimes it pays to get one of the other versions of this or that movie. The collector's edition of The Dark Crystal has the movie, of course, but it also has a copy of a notepad that Jim Henson wrote some ideas for the movie on, a parchment-like piece about the movie, and a special item that has a cel from the movie on it. Definitely worth getting.

Ad for the Collector's Edition.

Film Trailer

You can also buy an actual 35mm trailer of the film. Of course, unless you happen to have a 35 mm projector lying around about the only thing you can do with the trailer is unwind it carefully and look at the film using a moderately bright light as a background. Basically, it's just a cool thing to have if you are into The Dark Crystal. These, by the way, do show up once in a great while on ebay.

The Dark Crystal on Fraggle Rock

On episode 30, Boober's Dream, the card from Traveling Uncle Matt describes how he was at a drive-in that was showing the scene from the Dark Crystal where Jen and Kira are heading towards the caste on landstriders.

III. BOOKS ABOUT THE MOVIE

Only the new comic book about the new movie is currently available. For all the other books dealing with the original movie, once again ebay is an excellent choice. Amazon has various used sellers that also sell the books. Abe Books and Alibris Books are both good sources. Finding the books in other languages requires going to one of those two bookstores or a similar one.

The prices will vary quite a bit so you may need to do a little research to find acceptable copies at acceptable prices.

The Garthim Wars Volume 1

My main question about this book is why? Why even write it? If you know anything about The Dark Crystal, you know that Jen and Kira were the last two Gelfling left. Period. At least according to the film.

So, then, you automatically know that every single Gelfing in this Garthim Wars series is going to die. Period. No ifs, ands, or buts. No matter how courageous or innovative their fight, ultimately they will fail and all fall to the enemy.

So why do such a downer series anyhow? That's one thing I can't figure out.

So, as to the story. Lahr, a male Gelfing, comes from a village wiped out by the Garthim. Sound familiar?

Neffti is a female Gelfling that comes from a village wiped out by the Garthim. Again, sound familiar?

They warn another group of Gelfling that the Garthim will soon attack their settlement, and they manage to devise a defense of sorts and are able to destroy some of the attackers. Then, Lahr and Neffti decide they will go to the castle to free the Gelfling that have been caught.

So, a male and a female Gelfling go to the castle by themselves. Sound familiar?

So, in addition to being a book that is rather depressing, when one considers what will ultimately happen to all the Gelfling characters in the book, you also have a book that is way too close to the movie itself in basic plot.

A very disappointing work.

The Garthim Wars Volume 2

Lahr and Neffi are two Gelfling who have survived attacks of the Garthim (just as Jen and Kira would do in the future.) The two plans to stage a raid on the Crystal Castle and rescue captured Gelfling. After that there is a very interesting section dealing with intrigues among the Skeksis who are vying for power any way they can get it. The use of captured Gelfling for 'Gelfling essense' is also covered.

Lahr and Neffi get closer to the castle. Meanwhile Aughra is in her lab and says it will all end in tragedy.

Just like in The Dark Crystal, a male and a female Gelfling get to the castle and end up going down into a chasm. The only difference is Neffi makes Lahr a set of wings rather than carrying him down. Again, just like in the film the Chamberlain finds them in the tunnel.

Then, just like in the movie, there is another challenge. The only difference is that it's a trial by fire rather than a trial by stone. The Gelfling get away, but barely. Yet we already know what happened to them all, and that is they were all destroyed, ultimately, by the Skeksis because the movie established that Jen and Kira were the only two left.

There's also an artist's gallery and a lot of ads for other books.

The Dark Crystal free comic

This covers the mythology of Aughra, and tells about how the Urskeks constructed the Crystal Castle and manipulated its energy to help the beings of Thra. It reveals that Aughra had a son named Raunip and he wasn't the nicest person in the world, and that's putting things mildly.

There will be more comics in this series and I really hope that they don't keep using Raunip. He was not in the original movie and there was never any indication at all that Aughra had ever had a child. I can understand introducing some new people, like the Gelflings other than Jen and Kira, but Raunip would be too much to add, again this being due to there being no hint at all of any such being in the first movie.

The Making of the Dark Crystal

This is an oversized book filled with photos and information about the making of the movie The Dark Crystal. There are photos of the main characters along with photos and information on how the creatures were actually constructed. There are photos showing how Jen and Kira were originally going to look like and how they ended up. If you are interested in the behind-the-scenes information about the fantasy, then this is a good book to get.

TWO-ISSUE MARVEL COMICS SET

April, 1983. This issue goes from the beginning of the story through the mystics making their way towards the castle while Jen and Kira are riding landstriders, also approaching the castle. The story makes reference to the funeral of the former Skeksis Emperor, but doesn't actually show the funeral.

The artwork is well done, especially with having to work with what I would assume to be rather difficult-to-draw Skeksis and Mystics.

May, 1983. Continuing the story from issue 1, this cover from there up through the end of the story. Again the artwork is rather good except for Kira, where it varies from being mostly pretty good to some panels where it doesn't like like Kira much at all.

MARVEL COMICS SPECIAL

This is entitled Marvel Super Special #24. It's printed in a larger, magazine format rather than the normal comic book-size format. There's the same story as in the comics (although I think the artwork is colored slightly differently or something, but it looks better than that of the comics). There's ap icture from the movie on Jan and a landstrider. There is a thirteen page section of other photos from the movie, and full-page size photos on both the back cover and the inside back cover.

RECORD/TAPE AND BOOK

There are two versions of this publication, a book-and-tape set, and a book-and-record set. It is dated 1982 and is one of those things for younger readers where they listen to the tape/record then follow the story with the pictures, turning pages as necessary. It's almost thirty pages long, and the pictures in the booklet are extremely well done.

It's not an extremely difficult item to find, and it's another one where prices will vary.

THE TALE OF THE DARK CRYSTAL

The inside front cover and facing page have a map of sorts of The World of the Dark Crystal, although it's impossible to determine the distances between locations.

The artwork is pretty good for a children's book. The story is told in six chapters, although none of the pages are numbered which, in my opinion, they should have been.

This is a hardbound book and is pretty well done as a book for younger readers. You can often find it on ebay or Abe or Alibris books.

The World of the Dark Crystal

This is a 1981 book that contains illustrations by Brian Froud. It also contains photos and text. It contains a map showing the area around the Crystal Castle. In a chapter entitled The World of the Crystal and Aughra, there is a page that shows various symbols used in the movie and what they mean, including the triangular symbol that is so prominent.

The next chapter is The Darkened World and it has loads of illustrations of various creatures from Thra, partcularly those from the swamp area. The chapter after that is Of The Nature of the urRu. It lists the name of each urRu and what they did and contains numerous illustrations of the types of things they carried with them that relate to symbology.

The next chapter is Of The Nature of the Skeksis, and is simlar to the above chapter except, of course, it is geared towards the Skeksis. The last chapter is entitled Of The Prophecy and the Quest.

This is an over-sized book which is great in that it gives room for larger than normal and more detailed illustrations. There is no doubt at all that this is a book you would want to add to your Dark Crystal collection.

The Dark Crystal, including: Skeksis, The World Of The Dark Crystal, The Dark Crystal (computer Game), The Power Of The Dark Crystal, Characters And ... The Dark Crystal, Legends Of The Dark Crystal [Paperback]

This is a print-on-demand book which is pretty much just articles from Wikipedia put together in bookform. It's about 34 pages long and the price is around $12 or more. You can get the same information by just going to Wikipedia yourself and printing out the same pages. The font is also not very large.

IV. MAGAZINE ARTICLES ABOUT THE MOVIE

There are probably hundreds of very small articles from various newspapers across the country, primarily reviews, but I just want to deal with the better-known, not hard to get magazines.

AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER

This is the December, 1982 issue of this rather technical-oriented magazine. The first article is Creating a World For The Dark Crystal. First , there are various color photographs, various drawings, and various black-and-white photos in the article. Henson started working on the movie in 1977 according to the article. The Skeksis were fairly easy for Froud to design, but for most of the rest of the creatures it took various group discussion sessions to figure out what kind of creature would live where, what would it do, and what would it look like.

There are pictures about the construction of various things and one that shows how a human would work a landstrider. The article then goes into how a single creature is created, from design onwards, and it's a very, very complicated process.

The actors working inside the mystics had to go through a four week training program to get them into shape so they could bend over for a long time and not get cramps. Then the article goes into talking about the storyboard process.

The next article dealing with the film is Photographing The Dark Crystal. This one has fewer pictures than the first article. One of the difficulties was that there were actually two films being done at the same time, one of them The Great Muppet Caper. The Dark Crystal was requiring a lot of before-filming planning. The movie being a fantasy film made it all that much harder to photograph. One of the things they did was to take puppets that were fairly far alone in the construction process, build a small partial set and then light and film that much as a test. Discussions afterward would then lead to whatever changes it felt were necessary.

The article then goes into the actual equipment that proved useful and how color filters were used for different environments such as the swamp (green) and the valley of the mystics (gold.) Then the article discusses various technical things done and, quite frankly, it's all beyond me.

In the middle of this article there is another, smaller article called Lighting the Dark Crystal. One very interesting thing is that the men working on the lighting sometimes had to work in temperatures of 130 degrees.

CINEFANTISTIQUE

Cinefantastique is one of the absolute best magazines out that on film, and this issue devotes a good amount of space to The Dark Crystal. Even before that, though, there's a long article on Jim Henson and the Muppets.

The actual Dark Crystal article is The Dark Crystal: The behind-the-scenes story of one of the most complex and imaginative fantasy films of all time. There are a whole lot of really great pictures in the article also.

The article starts off with a fascinating section about the release of the movie and how much effort Henson had to make in order to get it released when he wanted. The roots of the movie go back to 1975, actually, as Henson was working to make his puppets more realistic than ever before. The original title of the movie was The Crystal.

A good bit of the preliminary conceptualization of the film was actually done when Henson was snowbound during travel, giving him time to work out ideas. His daughter, Lisa, helped him with this. Then the article goes on to tell how Brian Froud became involved. Also, the film work started with designing the environment and the characters; the story came after that had gotten started.

There was a major tie-in with a character from another film; Yoda. Some people in Henson's group helped design, build and work with Yoda which, in turn, served as a learning experience that could be applied to characters in The Dark Crystal. The design for the original Gelfling had them appear blue and furry-looking, by the way.

The article then goes into the construction of the various characters and how they managed to figure out how to get the characters to move and look real. The Skeksis, for example, varied in how much they could do. The Chamberlain had 21 facial movements he could use, but one of the other Skeksis only had two. It depended, of course, on their importance to the story.

Aughra started out as something entirely different. Aughra was going to be a male character called Habidabat who had crab-like pincers, a high forehead and whiskers. The article goes on to talk in detail about the construction and working of the various creatures. The Garthim, for example, consisted of some 590 separate pieces of material.

The Dark Crystal started filming on May 4, 1981. The article goes into the filming and various problems, including how to have the characters and the people operating them all working together, yet keeping the humans completely out of sight at all times. The article gives the reader a good idea of just how difficult a job it was to do the actual filming for the movie.

Another article in the issue is Confessions of a Creature Craftsman: Puppetmaker Lyle Conway provides an inside view of the fun, hard work and magic of filming The Dark Crystal. During one of the rehearsals a number of the puppet heads were damaged. The article has some tidbits about the performances of the creatures and funny things that would happen.

Finally, the issue has its own review of the movie. Henson gave life to a world, but gave its inhabitants no life. The article is basically saying that the Jim Henson company did a stand-out job with the puppets, the various creatures, the environment and the like, but the movie fell down seriously where the script was concerned. The article also points out that having the prophecy was a mistake, that it made it inevitable that Jen and Kira would succeed. It points out that only the Chamberlain and Aughra had actual personalities. What Jen was supposed to do and why and a whole bunch of other things were not made clear, the review continues. The review also says that what happens is a victory without a sacrifice, thus going against more traditional mythic stories.

DYNAMITE MAGAZINE

This is from Scholastic, Inc, which makes publications for younger readers. This is also one of the most wide-priced items I have seen, running from around $6 on ebay through people who are trying to get $100 or more for it. It has a four-page article with pictures of Aughra's observatory, an urRu, Frank Oz and Kira, Aughra and one of the Skeksis.

The author of the article was on the set for several days and writes about what he say. The main points I found are as follows:

The movie uses no live actors, making it different from almost all other movies.

Some of the puppet outfits are worn by the workers, such as the urRu outfits. These outfits have various mechanisms allowing things like facial movement. The Chamberlain, the article says, can make 21 different facial expressions.

Jim Henson handled Jan, and Frank Oz handled Aughra and some others. The Aughra head alone weighed some thirty pounds. At the same time four other workers would be behind Frank Oz, working the devices to make Aughra's facial expressions.

Objects that were to be picked up had to be designed so they could be picked up by a puppet hand, which made it different than if it were to be picked up by a human hand.

The article describes how complicated it was to film the section where the mystics merge with the Skeksis.

FAMOUS MONSTERS, March 1983

All the pictures in the article are in black-and-white. The cover, though, in color, is well done. The article starts with a recap of the main events of the movie. It then talks about Jim Henson, the Muppets, and other men involved in the history of the movie. Then it talks briefly about how the film was actually made. The article is like a summation of various other articles that I have read.

Fantastic Films #32, February 1983

Muppeteer Jim Henson and Star Wars Producer Gary Kurthz Talk About their Newest Project: Dark Crystal.

This is an interview with both men. Some of the main points of the interview include the following:

Henson is asked if the beings in the movie are considered muppets or puppets. He says they are just considered 'creatures.'

Workers practiced for up to eight months on creature movement before filming even began. The creatures are a combination of human plus radio control plus mechanical linkages, making them quite complex to work.

Kurtz considered Jen the traditional hero of the movie and, in a way, that makes him the most boring character.

Making the creatures move in a believable way, especially in actions like bending down, is very difficult. They can't just bounce around the screen like Muppets generally do.

FANTASTIC FILMS: MAY 1983

The article is entitled Inside the Dark Crystal. There are both color and black-and-white pictures from the movie and from behind the scenes. The article notes that the characters that were the most trouble to develop into believable puppets were Jen and Kira since their appearance was more human-like than any of the other characters in the movie.

There's an interesting picture that shows how a human wore the urRu outfit, and you get a good idea how difficult and uncomfortable it must have been for them to move around once dressed. The multiplicity of the characters, and their different appearances, also proved to be a problem since this type of work had not been done on this scale before, and they had to figure out just how to construct some of the creatures and make them believable.

The article is filled with information on how the creatures were made, and has interesting tidbits like the Skeksis were first more animal-like, but they were changed and given personalities during development. Another interesting bit is that each Garthim was composed of 590 parts. All of the major creatures are described in the article in more detail than I have seen anywhere else.

NEWSWEEK 12/17/82

(Actual article)

It takes some optical adjustment to sort out the strange beasties that populate The Dark Crystal. They include the Skeksis (villainous and vulture-like creatures with bad table manners); the Mystics (gentle, wise and droopily decrepit, with armadillo tails); the Garthim (the Skeksis' militia, a metallic mix of beetle and crab; the Podlings (button-faced ethnic types, clearly derived from happy but oppressed southern European peasant stock); Aughra (a one-eyed hag who's into astronomy, fierce but benevolent); Fizzgig (a scene-stealing canine, Toto with extra teeth); the fleet Landstriders (towering catfish on stilts); and most important, Jen and Kira, the Gelflings (immediately identifiable by their humanoid features as our hero and heroine, he looks like Dondi and Bruce lee reconstituted as a 12-year-old elf, she like Mia Farrow after too much plastic surgery.)

Welcome to Jim Henson's world of wonders, a fantasy pastiche without a single human in it. Henson and his gifted designer, Brian Froud (of "Faeries" fame), run some wild visions across the screen, but even young kids will quickly recognize the story line as a meltdown of every Mythic Quest from the Greeks to Tolkien to George Lucas. There's an ancient prophecy to be fulfilled and a young hero armed with a magical crystal shard who must journey to a dark castle where, at the time of the Great Conjunction, he must save a divided, dying world. Totas of a tender age may be nightmare prone from this encounter; the reptilian Skeksis, who drain and drink the vital fluids of their victims, don't behave like Muppets, though Henson and codirector Frank Oz make sure that no permanent harm befalls the good guys. What grownups will make of this depends on your susceptibility to the genre.

Starburst #55

The cover of the magazine is devoted to a photo of one of the mystics from the movie. The article has some very good color photos and some all right black-and-white photos. One of the hopes was that the people watching the film would accept the creatures as real and not think of them as puppets and how were they being made to work. There were major problems with the filming since it would take several people or more to operate one puppet, several puppets being used at the same time, and any mechanical failures that could happen.

Frank Oz was directing the film but also managed having to work in the film itself. The movie cost around $30 million to make.

Starburst #56

The critic feels that The Dark Crystal was 'a monumental waste of money.' He says there was too much emphasis on special effects and not enough on making it a complete movie. He thinks that one of the reasons for the movie was to take advantage of the teen-age interest in beings like Yoda, saying 'it seems to be an accountant's thinking, rather than an artist's, which is at the cold heart of The Dark Crystal.'

'On a purely dramatic level, David Odell's screenplay, from Jim Henson's story, is just too thin and simplistic even for the children's market at which the film is pitched. ' He notes that the characters in the movie are just not interesting as characters. Also, without any humans at all in the film, there is nothing with which the audience can identify. Much of the movie was shot in medium-to-close up views, helping emphasize that the characters were puppets and not actually real. He goes on to say the film is actually boring.

Starlog, February 1982, #55

This contains a one-page article entitled Muppets Evolve in Dark Crystal. The article says the film cost around $25 million to make and has some 70 characters. Then it gives a very brief description of the film and notes that two items of merchandise are planned.

Starlog #66, January 1983

There's an ad on the inside front cover for masks of Aughra and a Pod Peasant. The first article about the movie is Merchandising the Dark Crystal. The article talks about The World of the Dark Crystal, the Milton Bradley Dark Crystal game, clothing patterns, posters, dolls and various toys that are all tied in to the movie.

I've seen a Fizzgig that was knitted and it looks quite good. There was a Dark Crystal Collection of clothing.

The next article is Producing the World of the Dark Crystal. One of the things the article talks about is the screening of the movie in Washington. A special language for the Skeksis had been developed but, when the film was shown, the audience did not like the scenes and so the Skeksis language was dropped and English was used instead. The Podling speech is a mix of several languages, but the audience didn't seem to have trouble with that. The article discusses some prejudice against puppet-centric movies and related problems.

The next Dark Crystal-oriented article is Brian Froud: Creating The World of the Dark Crystal This one has numerous drawings that Froud had done showing various creatures from the world othe Dark Crystal. He discusses the various races in the movie such as the Skeksis, the urRu, the Podlings and the Gelflings, then he notes that 'There was a whole other race of beings, for instance, which lived below ground.' These weren't used in the movie but I imagine this group is what we will see in the movie The Power of the Dark Crystal.

The Podling People almost were the Potato People with various eyes in different locations on their faces. Fortunately, that concept was dropped. The article also discusses how the creature drawings were affected by the environment of the planet. It's a very interesting article.

(A second article:)

Merchandising the Dark Crystal

People have been curious about Dark Crystal since Starlog ran pictures from it last December. Then, there were the tantalizing trailers attached to the summer's prints of Conan and E.T.. Now, just in time for Christmas and the film's December 17 release, more and more stores are stocking Dark Crystal products.

Brian Froud's production art for the film has been collected in a handsome trade paperback entitled The World of the Dark Crystal, out in October. A handful of Dark Crystal books will be released for children, retelling the story and featuring art and photos involving the Gelflings, and the evil Skeksis.

Milton Bradley also rushed out their Dark Crystal spin-off in October. It's a board game designed for two to four players and requires competitors to race against one another to find the Dark Crystal's missing shard and return it before the Skeksis can rule the world.

Boutiques nationwide have stocked clothing patterned after the garb worn by the Gelflings and Pod People. Made out of natural materials, they command high prices and have been manufactured in limited quantities.

For the more mainstream consumer, a variety of posters, dolls, and toys will appear in the near future, including what some observers consider to be the hit of the film, toy Fizzgigs, Kira's little canine-like pet.

Marvel Comics has released their graphic adaptation in a plethora of formats including a 64-page, high-quality paper comic and three monthly regular comics. David Anthony Kraft adapted the story; the art was primarily by newcomer Brett Blevins assisted by Vince Collins and Rick Bryant.

As the movie continues to play through the winter, more and more manufacturers will be unleashing related products. And, if it's a hit, expect Skeksis masks and Gelfling costumes next Halloween.

Starlog #69 April, 1983

The article is entitled Behind-the-scenes with The Dark Crystal. The article is three black-and-white pages of photos from the construction of various creatures in the movie. Text material is minimal. The photos are interesting.

V. OTHER ITEMS RELATED TO THE FILM

Note: This is not all the items that were made. I'm sure I've missed some of them here and there. This also includes almost exclusively American-made items. I have some material from Japan, France and Germany, but I'm sure there was more available in all three of those countries. Still, I've done the best with what I have been able to find.

Bookmark

This is an item that is still available.

This item is still also available. It has an actual cel from the move, and the cels differ from bookmark to bookmark.

This one can be found on ebay.

Busts

There is a 'mini bust' of an Urskek available on Amazon.com. It was released in 2004 and the Amazon price is $99. There is no indication what the size. This is pretty much the type of thing that only a completist would want.

There was also a Skektek bust. This one is not available on Amazon nor anywhere else as far as I can determine. Picture collected by Bland Garrett, the creator of The Book of Habidabad - A Dark Crystal Website

Clothing

If you go to the Jim Henson Company site itself you will find that they have a lot of t-shirts available with various Dark Crystal images on them. The shirts are in the $20 range. These are also available from Amazon.com.

Coffee Mug

There is also a coffee mug with The Dark Crystal on it. The mug is white, the lettering black. It's also available from the Jim Henson shop and it runs around $30. As of when I am writing this, both the mugs and the t-shirts are still available.

Computer Games

The Dark Crystal was a computer game first released for the Apple II series of computers, and hen later for the Atari computers. It's a first-person computer game with the old style method of giving a description and then asking the user to type in some choice like Look or Take. The graphics are, of course, exceedingly primitive by today's standards. Still, for the time, it was pretty good.

The game was on floppy disks. The Gelfling Adventure was a game issued a little later and was a simplified version of the above game. You can sometime find the game online, but you will also need a program that will allow you to emulate an Apple II computer.

The second one that I found I found totally accidentally. I was going through various gamesites online and found one that had an actual Dark Crystal game. There are a bunch of online sites that have the game; it's called The Dark Crystal Find the Alphabets game.

There are three screens in the game and on each one your task is to find all the letters of the alphabet. Sounds easier to do than it is because the letters are in a shade of brown and much of the background is also in brown. Here are the three pages:

There is yet another online game called The Dark Crystal Trivia game. It consists of twenty questions based on the movie.

Dark Crystal Font

There is a special font now that is the same kind of font used in The Dark Crystal. The only problem, of course, is that the person you send something to with the font in it has to have the font in his or her group in order to read the Dark Crystal font.

Dolls

There was a Jen and a Kira doll made, each about 12 inches high, each in a box of its own. They are extremely hard to find now and are expensive when you can find them. You also have to read the ad to make sure that you are getting all the parts that go with the dolls. I'm a little disappointed with how the dolls look. I think they could have been made to look just like Jen and Kira in the movie, but that wasn't done. They will generally run at least $100 each if not more. About the only place to find them is on an online auction place like ebay.

Version of the Movie

There are a variety of release forms of the movie.

Videodisc

This one had me stumped for a bit but I checked up and found out that the Videodisc was a device that pre-dated the laserdisc. The Videodisc actually used a stylus to play its contents. By the time it was made commercially available the laserdisc and the VHS were coming out, making the Videodisc obsolete from the start so it quickly failed.

They also happened to weigh a lot more than a normal laserdisc.

VHS

Collector's Edition DVD

25th Anniversary Edition with lots of extra features

There are also other releases with different covers, and there are releases of the film in Japan and there is one in Spanish. Virtually all of these DVD and VHS releases can be found on ebay or one of the other auction sites.

Laser Disc

There are also laser editions of the movie. This is an older one; there is also one that is a collector's edition and I have seen a Japanese version on ebay.

Figurines

The figure of the Chamberlain, one of the Skeksis, has come out.

The detailing on the figurine is incredibly well done. The figurine is so well done that I don't plan to take it out of the plastic; it looks fine just as it is. The price is also reasonable. To me, figurines that run a hundred dollars or so are just too expensive no matter how neat they look.

There is also a figure the Mystic uRak and it's still available. It will cost over $80 with shipping, though. It's about the same size as the Chamberlain figure. The figure comes in an attractive box and actually looks even better than this prototype figure.

There were two sets of very small metallic figurines that were produced. The box noted that they could be painted. These, as far as I can tell, are virtually impossible to find anywhere.

Ones that weren't made.

There also seems to be a series of figurines that was gotten to a very preliminary stage then, for some reason, production of these was canceled. No one seems to know exactly why they were canceled, but it's possible that the movie was just not popular enough at the time to justify the production of the action figures. Pictures collected by Bland Garrett, the creator of The Book of Habidabad - A Dark Crystal Website

One of the action figures was to be Kira. The face is done fairly well, but the color of the clothing is a terrible shade of yellow/green. It should have been a brownish color, more like she actually had on in the movie. The figure, like the others in the series, came with a piece of the unhealed crystal which you could then assemble when you had all the action figures.

There was also a Skeksis action figure. For some odd reason it had a blue head, pretty much a solid color, and it had bright red Popeye-like arms. You're supposed to fear the Skeksis, not stand there and laugh at them.

There was also to be an action figure of Aughra. The face is recognizable and the clothing and coloration pretty much match the film.

There was to be a Jen figure, which seemed to be well done, plus figurines of a regular podling and one of a slave podling. These all also seemed to be well done.

There was also to be a figure of a normal podling which looks pretty much like a podling appeared in the movie.

Then there was to be a figure of a podling slave, which is a podling that has gone through the essence-draining process.

The back of the containers, showing the figures and how to put the Great Crystal together. There is one possible problem, though, and that is that all of the pieces of the crystal are ones from the fractured crystal, the one before it was healed by Jen and Kira. There is no comparable healed white crystal.

There would have been a some of these landstriders, although whether this one was meant to be alone, or is part of one that was to be Jen on the landstrider is something I don't know.

Then there was to be the garthim. Looks a lot like a really big bug so I'm not sure how many parents would have wanted there kids to have one of these.

From a different source I found two other figurines that might or might not end up being produced. One is of Jen and one is of Jen and Kira.

Folders

There were some of these folders made. There were three kinds made, the one shown, Jen on top of the crystal, and one with Jen, Kira and Fizzgig.

Foreign Movie Card

fc1, fc2

In France there is a place that makes cards like these for various movies. One side is photos from the movie and the other side is information in, naturally, French.

GAMES

There was a Milton Bradley Dark Crystal board game issued. It was a type of card game and it looks like it was probably pretty good. The box on this game was pretty much of a square shape. There was also a rectangular-shaped box Dark Crystal game. There will be a Dark Crystal Role Playing Game to be issued late in 2012 by Archaia. Finding the original games is a very difficult task and, if you do manage to find them, they will probably be in the $90-$100 range.

JAPANESE SOUVENIR BOOKLET

From what I have read the movie did quite well in Japan. A souvenir booklet was turned out. Both the front and back covers are very good. There are a number of very clear, very good photographs from the movie. There is a black-and-white page that shows the main characters and describes them (in Japanese, of course); there are a couple of pages which seem to be behind-the scenes information, plus a couple of pages on the people involved in the making of the film. There was also a laserdisc version of the film released in Japan (which is often on ebay).

Jewelry

I was going through various places on the Net, looking for Dark Crystal-related material, and I found a some sites that specialize in hand-made jewelry. They all offer a variety of very nice material.

One place is Etsy, an auction place. Do a search for The Dark Crystal and you will find places where jewelry is available. The items are very reasonably priced and there are at least eight different ones available. There is also some Dark Crystal-related jewelry on Amazon.

This item is entitled 1 inch Button Badge Dangle Earrings the dark crystal and is available on Etsy. The photo used is one of Jen, Kira and Fizzgig and is a nice image of the three of them together.

Another item are these beautiful bottlecap pendants with necklaces. They are called The Dark Crystal Jen and Kira Pendant Free Ball Chain with Purchase and The Dark Crystal Pendant Free Ball Chain with Purchase, which shows Jen, Kira, Aughra, a Skeksis and a Mystic.

There are also other varieties of jewelry that I saw, along with various other items. There is a set of Skeksis claws, a coaster set, various patches from the movie, a pillow, collages and other items.

Lobby Cards

These are things that, at times, were displayed in movie lobbies. There seem to be two different sets of lobby cards that were issued in English speaking countries, below showing one of the sets.

There was also a set of German lobby cards.

Lunch Box

There was also a lunchbox that was made. It contains a thermos with The Dark Crystal on it, and the outside portions have images from the movie. It's done well. The problem now is finding one that doesn't have a lot of rust on it, so turn to one of the auction services to try to find a lunchbox in good condition. It is also possible that you might have to buy more than one lunchbox to find all the proper pieces in good shape.

Music

The CD issued for the 25th anniversary edition of the film. There's thirteen cuts on the CD and its very good music.

This is the original 33 1/3 LP of the soundtrack.

Posters

Dark Crystal posters are available from various countries. Again, the auction sites are the best places to find these. There are a bunch of them, and some of them come from other countries. Posters for the new movie are also coming out.

Puzzles

There were four puzzles issued for The Dark Crystal. These are hard to find and are on the auction sites only very rarely.

Stickers

There was a company that made stickers for people and I had a few Dark Crystal ones made up. The company is no longer in business.

STILLS

There are various stills available from the movie. One of the advantages of these is that they sometimes offer closeups like the Skeksis one. Prices vary. They are usually available on ebay.

TRADING CARDS

There was a set of 78 trading cards put out for the series. There was nothing like there is today, though, with promo cards, special cards and so forth, making it almost impossible to get a complete set of something and having to pay a whole lot if you manage to do that.

This was a basic set. On one side would be a picture from the movie, and the other side would be a description of what was going on. Even though this is a fairly old set it's not that hard to find complete sets and even entire unopened boxes of the cards.

Apparently there was also a set of these cards issued in Spanish.

VI. You Tube Creations

There have been a good number of Dark Crystal-related videos done and put up onto You Tube. Unfortunately, some of these seem to vanish over time for some reason. Some of them consist scenes from the movie with other music added; some of them are deleted scenes from the movie, and there are other kinds as well. The videos vary over time, some seeming to vanish and others to appear.

One of the most useful ones included the funeral scene for the Skeksis emperor. Some feature music such as Bring Me to Life and My Immortal. There are some based on the yet unreleased movie, The Power of the Dark Crystal. All you need to do is to go to You Tube and type in The Dark Crystal and there will be plenty of videos to look at.

These are all materials that I found on You Tube.

VII. WORK PRINT OF THE FILM

The work print of a film is basically a rough draft of what the finished film will look like. Sometimes it will include most of the film but with certain special effects left out. It does give the people involved in the film a chance to see what the nearly-finished product looks like and see if they need to make some changes. You can find the work print on one of the standard auction sites.

The work print of The Dark Crystal lacks the title and the closing credits. It is also all in black-and-white, and the image quality is not very good. In addition, the Skeksis speak Skeksis for most of the time (although the Chamberlain seems conversant in English). The idea of having the Skeksis speak their own language was dropped from the final version of the film. An audience that saw the early version of the film didn't like the Skeksis using a language when there were no subtitles.

The work print also contains a section with the Emperor's funeral in it, another section which was dropped from the finished work. Also, some of the special effects are missing, mainly the lights that shine into the eyes of the Skeksis from the crystal, and from the Podlings and Kira from the Skeksis essence-drawing device.

This is the Great Castle as it appears near the opening of the film. The still gives the viewer a good idea of the rather low level of quality of the actual print.

This is from the Emperor's funeral. They bring the remains into the room in a small casket, then get something that is on fire and end up throwing it into the casket. I guess they wanted to make sure that the Emperor was really most completely dead.

Kira appears to rescue Jen from a swamp.

The mystics get to the castle and neutralize the Garthim.

The mystics and the Skeksis start to merge. Note that the background is totally black. The background was added later.

An Urskek. Again, the background is totally black.

XIII. FANZINES AND STORIES BASED ON THE MOVIE

For some reason, The Dark Crystal did not seem to generate much in the line of fan-written fanzines. The only ones I have been able to find have, frankly, been ones that I did myself for a relatively short time. There are, though, some stories up on fanfiction.net and I'll do a brief review of the ones I though were pretty good.

I'll start off with stories from Fanfiction.net. One of the problem with many of the Dark Crystal-related stories (and other stories, too) is that the author starts a story and suddenly stops it, sometimes even though it's obvious the author planned to make the story much longer. The only stories I will consider below will be ones that were finished. They may be only one page long or perhaps many pages, but they need to be complete stories to be included here. They also need to make sense and not do things like referring to other Gelfling being around when there is no explanation of why they are still there. The worst part about most of the stories, though, is that they have not been completed.

Do I? By Rose Rebellion. This is a very good story that takes place a year after the events in The Dark Crystal. Kira is trying to determine if she really is in love with Jen or not. This is a very introspective piece from Kira's viewpoint and brings up some very valid questions for her to consider.

Fractures by Merlin Missy. This goes back to when Aughra was young and lived with others who were basically ruling everything. She was sort of an outcast, mistreated by the others and had to work very, very hard cleaning and doing other chores. One day she somehow linked with the Crystal and gained prophetic powers and became a true witch. She sees a Gelfling and becomes attracted to him but things don't go well for her or the Shining Ones, her masters. This is a really good story.

Ghosts by KiraJenLove. This is a story about Jen and Kira, two days after healing the Crystal, sleeping with each other and having sex for the first time. After that the next time they sleep they both see their real parents who are full of praise for both the Gelfling. This provides some backstory to what happen to both Jen and Kira, and is a good short story.

Jen & Kira: A New Beginning by KiraJenLove. This story covers over a year's time after the events in The Dark Crystal. Jen and Kira are deep in love and have started on a family (although Jen's lack of sexual knowledge is interesting). Their desire is to live with the podlings, but Aughra has a different idea about something that she feels the two of them need to do in relation to finding a new home, and in relation to their futures. It's a really good story.

Nothing Much by Lauraeffingiero. A one-page story about when Jen and Kira were walking to the podling village and how Jen was quickly developing feelings for Kira. Very well done, romantic.

SkekTek's Bad Day at Work by Bill Hiers. This story focuses totally on the Skeksis scientist who drains podlings. It covers the time from the capture of Kira, the Chamberlain bringing her before the emperor, to when the scientist fell down the shaft and died. It's told from the scientist's viewpoint and that makes for a very interesting story.

Then We Shall See, Face to Face by asphalt-pirate. This is a story like none of the others that I have seen. It brings a Skeksis and an urRu together in a conversation, two beings that were once one and then were separated. It shows the Chamberlain as emotionally hurting, but still filled with total evil. His mystic counterpart and he are able to talk together, realizing that, one way or the other, an entire way of life will be ending soon. Their conversation is very interesting and the story very well done.

Traces by Ayehli. This is a very sad, but very good, story. It takes place after events in The Dark Crystal. Jen and Kira had been told to go and make a new world. The assumption was that they would have children and the Gelfling race would get going again. But what would happen if, for some reason, they can't have children?

Voyana I Love You by Akkadia: This is a short by very romantic story about Jen and Kira. Very well done, very touching.

Ercheinungsformen Der Wirklichkeit (The Shapes of Kindness)

This is a hardbound German translation of my story The Shapes of Kindness.

This is a fanzine I did which was a complete story entitled The Shapes of Kindness. The story is about a lonely human who loved the movie. He ends up being transported to Thra, the world of the crystal. He is able to adjust fairly well due to his knowledge of the movie, but what he had not counted on was a form of evil arriving on the planet at the same time he did, the evil thing leaking out from our own Earth.

The story also explains that there are other Gelfling in the world and explains how they got to Aughra's. Mark also develops an attraction for a Gelfling. He works with Aughra and others and finally has to confront the evil being.

The story is included in Appendix F.

This continues the story of Mark and his life on Thra. There is an evil wizard from another planet that comes to Thra to take it over. There's more background given on the Gelfling. Although Mark is not a wizard, he is tied closely to Thra and other parallel versions of Thra. The question is, of course, is the power of his love enough to defeat the evil of one of the darkest wizards ever?

Thet story is included in Appendix G

IX. CONCLUSION

I think a lot of people are like me. If you see a movie that moves you for some reason, you want to get things related to that movie. They somehow tie you in closer to that movie. I'm not saying you need to collect all sorts of things, of course. You might only want a few items at most but they still manage to bring you and the world of that movie closer, almost as if you can very nearly touch the movie, be in the movie, live in that movie's world.

It is good fortune to live in a time where getting such items is not that terribly difficult. In this modern-day world of computers we can just go online and, with patience and hard work, find what we want. Sometimes, of course, a little luck goes a long way, too. Collectibles are not new, of course.

Maude Adams was a famous American stage actress back in the late 1800's and early 1900's, well before the computer and recording devices, yet people were able to guy photographs of her and those photographs sold very well. Gradually we got to the point where you could use a tape recorder to tape the sound from a television show. This moved on to where you could use a VHS or Beta device to record the show or movie itself. Then came the Videodisc and the Laser disc and in today's world we have the DVD.

At the same time we moved from collectibles like just photographs that you found in a local store to a world where you can get online and buy things from almost any country on the planet and have them shipped to you. It's become a very interesting world, indeed.

Web Sites and Other Things

Listing web sites is always a tricky business as they tend to go in and out of existence very quickly. There are a few which have been around a while and which I think will continue to be around, and which are of great value to those interested in The Dark Crystal, so I will list those. Don't forget that there are various videos about and from The Dark Crystal on You Tube. Sources for Dark Crystal material include Amazon.com (generally listing used stuff from other people); Half.com, Ioffer and Bonanzle auction places. A couple of used bookstores that are online and that I have done business with successfully include Abe Books and Albris Books.

There are also some Yahoo clubs dealing with The Dark Crystal, although not all of them are active.

One of the best sites as far as Dark Crystal collectibles is that of Habidabad, whose site is here: Habidad's Web Page. He has a truly massive collection of Dark Crystal material and he has allowed me to use some of his photos in this work. There are other sites, of course, and a search on Google will reveal them to you.

One of the main places to get things is, of course, the place that made the movie in the first place and that is the Jim Henson site for Dark Crystal merchandise which is at:here.

APPENDIX A: THE DARK CRYSTAL CHRONOLOGY

The following are some original thoughts of mine on the world of The Dark Crystal. Note; these are my thoughts and have nothing to do with any 'official' movie background from the Jim Henson Company.

Fortunately, urAc, the Mystic scribe, had done considerable research on the history of Thra and had recorded that information within the spiral designs of a special cloth he kept in his cave. with the restoration of the Dark Crystal to its original status, that information was released to become part of the store of cosmic wisdom. After much effort and difficulty I managed to read that information from its cosmic storage area and have recorded it here for the benefit of non-Thra sentients.

The history urAc recorded was dated based on the beginning of the Dark Millennium, the time during which the Skeksis held power and the Crystal was dark. Therefore BDM means "Before Dark Millennium."

1. It is believed that pictographic writing was introduced to the Gelfling by Aughra.

2. Until this time each tribe had its own female leader. In 3285 a gathering of the Tribes was held in which all Gelfling tribes met and chose a Queen to reign over all the tribes.

3. The Gelfling had a very strong oral tradition. The written language was also introduced by Aughra, apparently in honor of the crowning of the first Queen. The oral tradition maintained the highest popularity through Gelfling history. only a few scholars practiced the more complicated formal written language and they seemed to use it only to record special occasions. The pictographic language was more widely practiced by builders and historians. The general Gelfling population, however, was quite content with its oral tradition.

Pre-Dark Millennium Monarchies

Note: A Gathering of the Tribes was often used to elect a new Queen, but the procedures of succession did not require such a gathering, so many of the new Queens ascended to the throne upon the death of their Queen mother.

In the year 54 ADM another attempt, this time successful, was made to colonize Beta continent. A colony was established on Gamma continent soon after. It was discovered that many colony attempts during the Dark Millennium had failed due to effects from the Dark Crystal. Beta and Gamma continents had their own power centers which were also corrupted by the Dark Crystal. this resulted in mutation of local life forms which became the reptilian creatures referred to earlier. With the healing of the Great Crystal these creatures vanished.

APPENDIX B: ASTRONOMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THRA

In this section we shall briefly examine the main characteristics of Gelfing biology and culture, starting with their planet of Thra.

Thra is the world of the object formerly known as the Dark Crystal. It is a type-M planet, meaning capable of supporting humanoid life. It is similar to the earth in size, with an oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere and a great abundance of life forms. Thra circles three stars, one the "dying sun," a red dwarf star near the end of its life cycle. the second star, the "rose sun" is a class M red star. The third member of this stellar trilogy is a type G1 star, slightly larger than our own type G2 star.

Although inhabited planets orbiting triple-sun systems are quite rare due to the complexities of orbital mechanics, Thra is one of those rare planets where the complexities work out just right to allow the planet to maintain a relatively constant surface temperature.

The planet has three major continents. Alpha continent is the location of the Crystal Castle. Beta continent is located to the east, while Gamma continent is located to the west.

There is a relatively wide variety of biomes present, although the slightly warmer temperatures on Thra do not allow the presence of the Arctic-type biomes as found on earth. Swampland, Tropical Rain Forests, Temperate Deciduous Forests and Grasslands are the major biomes found on Thra. There is a season which approximates Earth's fall, but no winter season is present.

The vast majority of the planetary surface, some 83%, is made up of ocean. This compares to Earth's 75%-25% mix.

APPENDIX C: GELFLING BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTION

Gelfling evolution

Gelfling and Podling life forms arose on Alpha continent through normal evolutionary processes. Gelfling stand, in adult size, between three and four and a half feet tall. They possess four digits on hands and feet, a warm-blooded circulatory system and all other typical characteristics of intelligent humanoid life forms.

Examination of fossil life forms show an interesting lack of any large land predatory species such as the dinosaurs as found on the earth. Other than that major difference, Thra evolution has produced an extremely wide variety of life forms, perhaps even more different kinds then have been discovered on the earth.

Since the Gelfling society is based on a more harmonious living with their environment than Terran society, Thra has not suffered the ravages of wide-spread deforestation and massive building construction as has been present on the earth, nor has it suffered from any major pollution. Both these reasons have contributed to the continuing wide variety of life forms and the relatively low level of extinction on the planet (other than during the Dark Millennium).

Gelfling Biology

Birth Rate

The Gelfling possess a relatively low birth rate. They do not become capable of bearing children until they have reached their forties. Generally after bonding there would be a period of ten to twenty years before any children would be born. After that several children would be born within the next couple of decades; after that the rate of births tends to fall off. Typically a Gelfling female can bear ten to fifteen children during her life span.

The exception to the general rule was that of the Queens who, for some reason yet unknown, generally were able to bear children for a much longer period of time than the "average" Gelfling female; hence, some Queens had over twenty daughters.

Overpopulation has never become a severe problem with the Gelfling. It seems that the Gelfling live extremely close to the planet itself. A sort of feedback mechanism has been hypothesized between the environment and the female Gelfling which tends to limit the number of children born to a number that the environment can adequately feed and house.

Any period of widespread plague or disaster, for example, reduces the population considerably; consequently, there is always a considerable increase in the birthrate for a short time until the overall Gelfling population once again stabilizes.

Fertility

Fertility is controlled by the female Gelfling in some manner apparently intimately linked to the environment. When the environment alters in either a positive or a negative way, Gelfling fertility either increases or decreases. The exact mechanism behind this is not known at this time.

Sexual activity is quite common among Gelfling, yet unwanted births are virtually unknown, again indicating that the female has some form of control of whether or not she will become pregnant no matter how frequently she has sexual activity.

Bone Structure

The Gelfling possess a light bone structure, the females somewhat moreso than the males. The ability to fly, of course, would be impossible if the Gelfling possessed a heavy bone structure, so it is believed that the light bone structure and flying ability evolved together during the earliest part of Gelfling evolution.

Flight

The ability to fly is possessed only by female Gelfling. During the early years of Gelfling history females could make unassisted flight. During the Dark Millennium this ability to fly was gradually lost, resulting in the females being capable only of gliding. After the healing of the Great Crystal the ability to fly quickly returned.

Flight has two primary advantages to the female. First, the mating ritual involves an aerial dance and other activities in which the female performs a particularly sensuous aerial dance, enticing the male and generally leading to sexual activity and a strengthening of their bonding.

The second advantage is tactical. Females can explore wider areas, search for new food sources and, in some instances, actually do aerial artwork. The physical advantage over the male Gelfling was never exploited by the females, however, Such an exploitation was not within the real of thought for any Gelfling.

Mating Dance

The mating dance as the most intense sensual and sexual experience that a Gelfling can feel. It occurs only between deeply bonded pairs, and the female determines when the dance will occur. The female performs a preliminary dance during which she gradually removes her clothing. The normal pheromones the female produces increase strongly during this activity. After disrobing the female becomes airborne, performing an aerial ballet for her mate. During this activity the mate is virtually spellbound. After the aerial ballet the female lands, mounts her mate and begins actual sexual activity.

The session of sexual activity continues for a period of hours after which the mate ritualistically gently strokes the female's wings and both Gelfling fall asleep. Pregnancy as a result of the mating dance is estimated to be in the neighborhood of 93%, so a link between the dance and the reproductive drive is considered likely.

Lifespan

The average lifespan of a Gelfling is from 350 to 400 years. The ability to reproduce begins during the forties and extends for the next several decades, although having children even in later years is not totally unknown. The Gelfling remain physically vigorous and mentally alert until shortly before their death. Gelfling can somehow sense when their natural lifespan was near an end and they tend to approach their deaths with calm dignity.

APPENDIX D: GELFING PSYCHOLOGY

Gelfling Psychology

Bonding

There are several levels of bonding, varying in intensity and length of effects. One level of bonding is through the process of dreamfasting. This can be done between two Gelfling or between a Gelfling and a Podling. This level tends to temporarily increase the psychic awareness of the bonding pair, establishing a mental link between them that will gradually decrease over time unless a deeper level of bonding is obtained.

The strongest level of bonding results in a bonding that will last throughout an entire lifetime. This can, on rare instances, begin during the first dreamfasting episode, as it did with Jen and Kira. The psychic bonds formed are intense and permanent and present in virtually every level of activity. A strong degree of telepathy is often established and, during the most intense sexual sessions a virtual unification of the minds of the two Gelfling takes place.

An extended familial bonding can also take place, increasing the strength of the family relationship in Gelfling society. This bonding also tends to last the entire lifetime of the individuals involved.

Should one of the two members of the strong pair-bonding die, some elements of the bonding will still remain, but a new bonding can still take place so that even the eldest of the Gelfling are still usually in some high level of pair-bond relationship.

Dreamfasting

Dreamfasting is an important means of communication amongst the Gelfling in that it allows a very deep sharing of personal experiences between them, taking place on a non-verbal level. Dreamfasting also varies in strength and can take place between two Gelfling, a Gelfling and a Podling, and perhaps between a Gelfling and Aughra, although no written evidence of this has yet been found. It is not a prerequisite to the strongest level of bonding but can lead to that level. It is an instinctual activity and cannot be "taught" or "improved upon." It helps to increase the ability of Gelfling to understand each other for, by understanding the background of the other Gelfling in such intimate detail, conflicts end up being minimized.

Family

The Gelfling are extremely family oriented. Once permanent bonding has taken place and the raising of a family has begun the close family structure becomes even closer. The Gelfling possess an extended-family structure and thus one tribe might be made up of a dozen or more families, each family with several generations of members.

The familial units have not led to any sense of territoriality, however, as happened in early human evolution. No one family is considered superior to another; delight is taken in differences of thought and abilities. Quarreling between families in general and family members in particular is virtually unheard of in Gelfling society. Care of children is seen as a family project in which Gelfling of all generations and both sexes take great delight.

General Gelfling psychology

The Gelfling are a very peaceful race that lives in complete harmony with the planet. Their greatest pleasures are in music, food, fun, love and sexual activity. No concepts of tribal superiority, sexual superiority or age superiority are present. The Gelfling considered all their surroundings to be alive and to be treated with the greatest of this respect. In this matter some of their behavior is not unlike that of many of the earlier Native American tribes.

Female Gelfling are extremely sensual in nature and are in some manner strongly psychically linked to the planet. Only females are healers and the healers could calm emotional disturbances as well as heal physical ills.

The "emotional disturbances" referred to problems arising from the loss of a bondmate and similar problems. No true "psychotic" Gelfling remained so for long, as several healers together, sometimes even involving the Queen as chief healer, would be able to restore the Gelfling to mental harmony. Even the worse of the psychotic cases that arose (and these were extremely few) realized, on an instinctual level, that they needed the aid of a healer and sought out such aid as soon as possible.

The abilities of the Gelfling males in the field of music are exceptional, and virtually all music is performed by male Gelfling.

The vast majority of the Gelfling bonding relationship occurs on the nonverbal level, and a description of their deepest psychological traits is beyond the ability of mere words to express. Much of Gelfling life is on a "felt" level rather than on a rational/logical level of understanding.

Sex

The Gelfling are an intensely sexual race, using sex as much as a means of communication as anything else. Sexual activity begins for the Gelfling when they enter their twenties. Until permanent bonding takes place sex can be with a wide variety of partners. Never during this time, however, is the mating ritual performed and no female Gelfling ever becomes pregnant before permanent bonding takes place.

Once permanent bonding has taken place sexual activity tends to be only with the bondmate. Sexual activity is quite frequent, both before and after bonding, and is considered one of life's greatest pleasures.

Telepathy

All Gelfling are mildly telepathic at birth. Gelfling who have permanently bonded have the highest level of telepathy, but all Gelfling remain telepathic at least at a basic level for their entire lives.

APPENDIX E: GELFLING CULTURE

Gelfling Art and Music

Two of the major delights of Gelfling are their art and their music. both have been developed to a very high degree; musical artifacts dating back nearly to the very beginning of Gelfling history have been found.

Although both art and music were highly developed, there was never a sense of competition amongst the Gelfling as there is with humans. Gelfling artists and musicians took great delight in teaching their crafts and even greater delight when one of their pupils turned out to be a master at the craft.

The vast majority of the music was limited to oral tradition; therefore, in the great purges carried out against the Gelfling much of this was lost forever. Only a few songs were ever recorded in written form; a few of those managed to survive the burning of the Music Academy.

Crafts

A wide variety of crafts is practiced by the Gelfling. Flower arrangement, jewelry crafting, carpentry, dancing and limited use of metals are all practiced, although never on a massive scale. Objects produced are made in numbers sufficient for immediate use, and emphasize beauty of form and structure. The tendency to want "possessions" so common in humans is not present in the Gelfling. This has helped to hold down the number of "objects" produced and minimizes damage to the environment.

The Gathering of the Tribes

The purpose of a Gathering of the Tribes is to select a new Queen. If a Queen ended her reign and none of her daughters wished to become Queen, or if it was "felt" by the Gelfling that a new Queen from another tribe was needed, then representatives of all Gelfling tribes would meet in the capital of Tarakendal. The representatives, both male and female, would hold hands and engage in a mass dreamfasting session, after which would follow a period of meditation. The name of the individual that was to become the Queen would then become known to all the Gelfling in a process that cannot be analyzed or expressed in words. The Gelfling so chosen would be crowned and recognized by all Gelfling tribes as the "rightful" Queen.

At no time during Gelfling history did any female "campaign" for Queen, nor did any tribe attempt to put forth a candidate. Such thoughts were alien to the Gelfling psychology.

Healers

Healers were inevitably female. They were born with the ability and would be trained by other healers. A healer had the ability to heal both physical and emotional illnesses. In severe cases the serves of more than one healer was used, sometimes as many as four healers working on the Gelfling at the same time.

For some yet unknown reason, when a female Gelfling became Queen she found that her healing abilities were increased substantially.

Matriarchy

Gelfling society is matriarchal in nature. Only female Gelfling become Queens or healers, and females control the times of their fertility. This does not mean, however, that the females were considered dominant or superior to the males, for such thoughts were foreign to Gelfling psychology. The matriarchal arrangement was accepted by all Gelfling without any qualms. Whenever a situation arose in which a male Gelfling had to assume command of a tribe temporarily, a great deal of unease was felt, and the leadership of the tribe was turned over to a female Gelfling as quickly as possible.

Gelfling society is not biologically equal, of course, since it is the female Gelfling that possesses wings and controls the fertility level. Again, however, this does not mean that the males are considered subordinate to the females. There are, in fact, no words in human language to describe the detailed arrangement of Gelfling society and how it functions since attitudes of dominance, aggression and control are not part of Gelfling psychological makeup.

Meals

Meals are always taken communally. At least two families if not more will eat their meals at the same time. The preparation of meals is done by the female Gelfling, with children of proper age being allowed to "assist." This form of communal dining is evidenced by the construction of Gelfling castles which also contain a single large banquet hall in which all the individuals staying at the castle take their meals together.

The Gelfling are almost entirely vegetarian in nature. Food is gathered by male and female Gelfling alike and then taken to the communal kitchen.

Before the meal begins there is a short period of grace during which thanks are given for the food. This grace generally consists of an apology for the taking of the life of the plants involved and a since wish that, through the death of the plants, new life would be created and would serve the planet well.

Pictographic Writing

Pictographic writing was developed early in Gelfling history. It is believed that it was introduced by Aughra around 3325 BDM. Almost all history and records were kept in this format. Pictographic writing became an art form unto itself and resulted in the decoration of many castles with pictographs that described the history of the tribes forming the castle family. The ability to read pictographic writing, for reasons unknown, is limited strictly to male Gelfling.

Written language

The written language is used infrequently and is believed to have also been introduced by Aughra. Only males are capable of using the written form of language for some unknown reason.

Religion

Religion is a very personal experience for the Gelfling, and there is apparently only one form of religion present amongst the tribes. A single Creator is worshiped, the worship consisting primarily of the Gelfling living their lives the best way they can in the closest harmony with the planet and all other life forms that they can achieve.

No formal churches or religious artifacts ever arose amongst Gelfling. There is a firm belief in an afterlife in which the individual goes to another dimension in which he or she finds themselves on another Thra but at a very young age, allowing the individual to live another full life. A series of such events is postulated, but no "goal" of "eventual purification" is ever stated or implied.

Speculations on the evolutionary and psychological characteristics of intelligent life forms on Thra

The world of Thra was conceived in great detail by Jim Henson and Brian Froud.

"out of time and place the world of The Dark Crystal is beautiful and strange with a secret, sometimes frightening ambiance. It is a world of fantasy and imagination where the forest and swamp breed danger and mystery...Here everything is alive. Plants and trees have the gift of speech, water murmurs the music of forgotten days, and the possible replaces the impossible as mountain and rock become moving beings."(1)

The first question to consider is whether such a planet as Thra could exist. It is seen in the movie that the world Thra rotates around a triple star system. The stars are referred to as the "dying sun," the "rose sun", and the "Great Sun." I wrote Issac Asimov to ask if there could be a habitable planet in a triple star system and he replied:

"Triple-star systems are always arranged so as to have two stars in relatively close proximity and a third star very distant. The single star can have habitable planets, of course, if it is Sun-like. The double star can have one circling both as a ‘point' if they are very close together and each can have a habitable planet if they are quite far apart." (2)

Thus, it is possible that such as world as Thra could exist. The planet itself seems to be rich in a variety of biomes. Early in the film Jen, the male Gelfling, has to cross a mountain and a wide grassland plain. Later he meets Kira, the female Gelfling, in a swamp. Kira lives with a group of beings called the podlings deep in a deciduous forest. There are no glaciated regions on the world (3), probably due to the proximity of the "Great Sun" and a somewhat warmer average temperature than that on Earth. One question unanswered is where on the planet the events of the movie take place. It could be, for example, that the equatorial region is basically desert. There does appear to be an abundance of water on the planet, as shown in the storms and the number of rivers, so it's also possible the equatorial region could be similar to a rain forest biome.

There is also a very rich variety of planet and animal life. In the swampland above:

"Trees trundled through the mud. Mushrooms spread gorgeous wings and whirred into flight. A fluttering butterfly was devoured by a long orange tongue flicked out from a drab stump of cactus. It was like a laboratory in which forms of evolution were permuted." (4)

There appears to be a lack of major carnivores. In Jen's journey he expressed no concern about danger from such animals, and the podlings also lacked such concern about themselves. There also seems to be a lack of sophisticated weapons, indicating again a lack of need for such weapons due to a lack of dangerous carnivores.

Urskeks: The Urskeks were a band of 18 beings that came to Thra from another planet. (5) They left their world to engage in an experiment, that being to attempt to purge themselves of all evil. They entered the Great Crystal and were split into two forms of beings; the Skeksis, who were a race of evil reptilian monsters, and the urRu, a race of gentle, peaceful Mystics.

The Skeksis took over the castle and with that and the Crystal they had managed to spread their evil throughout the world. Negative energies were radiated along lei lines form the castle to the rest of the planet, with one result being the creation of strange and monstrous forms of life.

Yet the Skeksis and urRu parts remained intimately linked, for when one died the counterpart would also die. Nine Skeksis/urRu had died by the time of the events of the movie, and the Emperor/urRu counterpart died early in the film.

This is somewhat similar to the Star Trek episode "The Enemy Within" when Kirk is split into two forms, one aggressive and one very passive, and neither half can properly exist without the other half. In the movie we find that the urRu are gentle beings who are totally ineffectual in stopping the Skeksis reign of terror, and the Skeksis are so bent on their own personal advancement and long life that they were willing to waste the entire planet to insure their own continued existence.

It is interesting to note that in the thousand years the Skeksis ruled they never developed a high technology except for the machine used to drain the "vital essence" from their captives.

The garthim, crustacean-like agents of destruction, were:

"...scarcely creatures at all, more like the impulses of a cruel brain made over into crustacean objects."(6)

That they were animated by the power of the Skeksis mind is shown by the manner of their demise at the end of the film; they simply shatter into empty objects, parts falling like so much garbage onto the floor.

Do the Urskeks fit accepted ideas of extraterrestrial intelligence? They seem to fit most of the characteristics an intelligent life form would have. They have a head, eyes, sensory organs, they possess arms and legs in reasonable numbers and they are capable of speech. They do seem to be energy beings, however, rather than actual physical beings; their entry into the Crystal must have altered their vibratory rate or something, resulting in the physical bodied Skeksis and urRu. The idea of physical-based beings gradually evolving into beings of pure energy is something not uncommon in science fiction (the Krell in Forbidden Planet, for example), but whether such a thing is actually possible in reality is unknown.

The podlings appear to be a diminutive race of intelligent beings that live in close harmony with the land, living in hollowed out pods of plants. They seem to enjoy fun, music, dance and eating. Their main enemy was the garthim, which would at times raid Podling villages and take captives for use by the Skeksis. The podlings also seemed to lack a major technology. Everything they had was made of natural materials and with a utilitarian purpose. They were a peaceful people that seemed to live in harmony with the Gelfling.

Aughra is one of the most fascinating of all the creatures in the movie. According to her own account, she was:

"Born from the need for rocks and trees for an eye to see the world. The wind blew and the blind trees and roots twisted in the dark rocks and the roots and the rocks cracked and I was Aughra."(7)

This is basically a shamanistic account of her origin. As to Aughra's actual origin, assuming it wasn't as she stated, we have no clues. There are no others of her kind although she could be the last surviving member of some race. Aughra possessed the most advanced technology of any race in the movie, complete with observatory and some form of chemical laboratory. It was constructed for her by the Urskeks (8), however, so it is possible they found her and trained her in science.

The Gelfling were the elvin-like humanoid figures of central importance to the movie. They possess four digits rather than our five, and the female Gelfling possess wings, but otherwise their outward appearance is quite similar to ours.

They possessed somewhat more technological ability than the podlings, as they had carpenters and smiths capable of crafting jewelry (9), but their technology seemed turned towards the production of jewelry and household materials rather than anything which would result in Gelfling domination of the land, as humans have dominated the earth. This makes sense, however, in that the Gelfling seem, like the podlings, to be closely tied to the planet in a harmonious relationship.

The Gelfling civilization seemed to be, like the podlings, agriculturally based. They did build at least one building of stone, the Gelfling ruins seen in the movie. They also had, at least one time, a Queen, so they probably had a monarchy type of government.

It seems that the Gelfling also never developed advanced weapons. If they had, of course, then the Skeksis genocide attempt would have failed. It is possible that the psychology of the Gelfling and podlings are totally alien to our own, lacking any form of aggressive nature except in the most dire of circumstances. In essence, the thought of making advanced forms of weaponry might not even have occurred to them.

During a dreamfasting, Kira reveals that the podlings and Gelfling had a long history together:

"In Kira's image, her foster mother, Ydra, taught her Gelfling speech, explaining that their two races had always lived together in courteous harmony, as they had with nature."

The movie also establishes that female Gelfling possess wings and at one time could fly. This would indicate that they have a relatively light bone structure. The purpose of the wings is open to speculation. Since there seemed to be a lack of carnivores then the wings would not have evolved for protection. Perhaps they evolved to be used in some form of mating ritual, and perhaps the females were the "aggressors" in establishing relationships. Their society apparently was matriarchal in nature, perhaps arising from the fact that the males were not "whole" compared to the females who did possess wings.

As for dreamfasting, it seems that it could pass on knowledge but also very probably was involved in deepening emotional relationships between individuals. Dreamfasting also indicates that Gelfling possessed some form of telepathic ability. In such a society it would have been hard to keep secrets. That plus the overall peaceful nature of the Gelfling could account for the lack of technological development as they would have had no desire to dominate their planet or others.

The Shapes of Kindness

Chapter One

Now, then, Mr. Johnson, if you will make yourself comfortable we can begin our interview." The psychiatrist pushed his glasses back up and then proceeded to lean back in his plush leather chair.

Mark Johnson sat tensely in his chair. He glanced briefly out the window, noticing that a major storm seemed to be coming in from the west. Thick black clouds moved swiftly, blotting out the sun like some cancerous disease. People on the street hurried their pace as the wind rose, blowing bits of debris before it.

Mark was in his mid-forties with dark hair, broad shoulders and deep, sad eyes. An only child, he had few friends as he grew up. He was basically an outcast from the other children although he was never able to figure out exactly why he was considered outcast. He never hurt anyone, never bothered anyone, never asked for anything, really.

As his school years went on his loneliness grew. Even his time in college proved to be of little improvement. Granted, he had finally had one attempt at romance, having fallen deeply in love with a girl in one of his classes, but the affair ended when she abruptly dumped him, never even bothering to explain just why her feelings changed almost literally overnight from love to hate.

Such was the way of life, he figured. "No good deed goes unpunished" seemed to be a truism in his life for whatever good he tried to accomplish only somehow seemed to end up serving to further set him apart from others. He had considered trying to become a teacher but realized that, with his lack of people skills, such a profession would be a disastrous choice. Instead, he ended up working at a paper mill. There was no intellectual challenge for him, of course, just the monotony of his daily routine, but this didn't seem to bother him anymore. He did his job and kept to himself.

At home he read, watched movies, worked on the Internet and had his own site with a rather eclectic mix of materials.

He managed to keep going for a while, but eventually the loneliness, the isolation, the overwhelming feeling of sadness got to be too much for him and he tried to kill himself, using sleeping pills. He was almost successful, but a neighbor had stopped by to borrow something ,noticed the unlocked door and entered, finding Mark in his bedroom, already in the process of throwing up.

He was taken to the hospital, treated, arrested for trying to kill himself, and a few weeks later sentenced by a judge to undergo psychiatric counseling. Thus, Dr. Roberts office on this particular day.

"Why, Mr. Johnson," Dr. Roberts said, " did you attempt to kill yourself'?"

Mark looked down at the floor for a moment and than be an to speak. "I had reached the conclusion that I had nothing left to live for. I was tired of being alone, tired of being left out of everything, tired of feeling so much sadness and pain from myself and others.

"Isn't there anything that you feel is going right for you, something you can look forward to each day?"

"No, there isn't," Mark replied. "I feel like a reactor with all the control rods pulled out. I'm always doing something just to try and take my mind off what is happening to me but it still doesn't seem to do any good."

Outside the sunlight had totally disappeared, replaced by thick layers of clouds. The clouds felt like a physical pressure on Mark as he saw the first flashes of lightning signaling the beginning of the storm.

"Your test results," Dr. Roberts began, "seem to indicate a person of above-average intelligence. Your creative abilities are very highly developed. You actually have quite a lot going for you.

"At the same time," he continued, "there is no doubt that you suffer from clinical depression, self-destructive tendencies and, although I would need further testing on this to be absolutely sure, I think that you might even be slightly autistic."

The psychiatrist took a drink from his ever-present can of pop and then continued. "What kind of interests do you have? Perhaps you could find others who have similar interests and develop relationships that way."

Mark glanced around the room for a moment and then answered." The kinds of I'm interested in aren't all that popular in this city."

"What kinds of things are those?" the psychiatrist asked.<.p>

"Paranormality, virtually all aspects of that. UFO abduction cases. Science fiction, fantasy, Egyptology, not exactly the types of things that you talk about with others in a casual manner."

"The sounds of thunder entered the room as the first of the rain began to fall. The lightning flashed nearby, lending its power to the fury of the storm.

"What kind of movies do you like," the psychiatrist asked.

"Anything that ends happily," Mark replied. A frown crossed Mark's face. "This world," he began, is evil. People behave almost savagely towards others. We're not civilized at all. We kill, let people suffer, failing to help those in need, but at the same time spending billions upon billions on weapons of destruction."

He paused for a moment. "Businesses become ever bigger, taking more and more control of people's lives. At the same time they try to continually shaft their own workers, cutting benefits, treating workers almost like slaves. And yet it seems that the majority of people don't see these things, or don't care, because the same politicians rule as always, out of touch with the people, out of touch with the truth."

"I think a series of treatments will be necessary to deal with your problems, Mr. Johnson. You seem to have some major difficulties that it will take a lot of time to work out. I'd like to see you again in my office at four o'clock next Thursday."

The doctor closed Mark's file, bringing the session to an and. Mark rose, shook the doctor's outstretched hand and then left the room. He walked slowly down the corridor, head bowed, then took the steps rather than the elevator, thinking over what the doctor had said. No matter how he looked at things, he didn't feel there was any way the psychiatrist could actually help him. The loneliness was too much, the sadness of the world was too much.

Soon he was out on the street, making his way against the pouring rain. He had left his umbrella at home, trusting to his luck and, as usual, his luck had failed him.

He passed an alley with an almost palpable stench coming from it as from piles of aged refuse that were trying to poison the air. He walked on, pelted by the massive drops of water cascading from the blackened sky far above. The people he saw were deep into their own worlds, usually unaware of his passing. At times a girl would look his way then pass swiftly on.

He could feel his socks squishing in his water-logged shoes as he hurried his pace. He needed a few things from the grocery for supper and had hoped he would get there and home before the worst of the storm had sat in.

Lightning flashed ominously overhead as he remembered years back to a time of innocence when he had fallen in love, expecting his loneliness to be ended at last, finding instead increasing pain as the relationship disintegrated around him.

He found himself increasingly lost in his own fantasies. At the moment he was thinking about one of his favorite movies, The Dark Crystal. Mark had fallen in love with Kira, both with her physical beauty and her warm and loving nature. That world, now freed of its Skeksis horror, seemed to him the type of paradise that he had always searched for.

He thought of the movie as he walked, the water pouring from the heavens, the buildings around him standing cold and aloof. He pictured them instead as the trees of his beloved Thra, and the sounds of the cars became the sounds of exotic animals. His thoughts so occupied his mind that he did not notice the strange sight happening above him.

Lightning flashed in an ever quickening pace, striking out at an invader in its midst, a meteor from the depths of space, a small piece of a planet long dead, a planet on which magic, rather than science, was the master.

It had been an old planet far older than the earth. The beings who lived there measured their lives in millenia and had pursued their dream of peace throughout their lives. Their world was one ruled by magic rather than science. They had infused the very planet itself with their magical strength so that they could shape stones, cause plants to grow and maintain a peaceful harmony amongst all the life forms of their world.

Aliens from another planet, one where military might was literally worshiped as a god, had eventually attacked. The beings of the peaceful planet, known as Allengore, refused to take any life, even that of the attackers, knowing full well that if they failed to destroy the awesome weapons of the invaders that their world would be destroyed.

Instead they had chosen to transport themselves and all life from their planet to another world in a far dimension, a young world without life but not inhospitable to the arrival of peaceful colonists.

When the invaders saw that their prey had vanished they used their weapons to destroy the planet entirely, sending small pieces on their lonely trips throughout the cosmos.

It had been this series of events that had resulted in one small piece of the magical planet finding its way to earth. Infused with a magic far stronger than any ever practiced here, it sensed the presence of one in dire need, one whose own world was being destroyed by uncaring; others. The meteor came for Mark Johnson.

It blazed earthward, lightning tearing at it, swirling around it in a cacophony of sounds and colors. When Mark finally came out of his reverie and saw what was happening it was too late to flee. The meteor rushed at him.

He thought one last time of Kira's world and then there was blackness.

Chapter Two

The first thing he noticed was the light coming through his closed eyelids. It seemed bright, brighter than it should have especially considering that there was supposed to be a violent storm going on. He tried to open his eyes and move his body but nothing wanted to respond to his wishes. He lay there, feeling the warmth of the light upon him. He enjoyed the cooling breeze that swept over his body whenever the wind arose. he felt the grass around him, the pricking sensation against his skin and he breathed deeply, taking in the smells of the world around him. Once again he passed into unconsciousness as his body demanded more rest.

Only much later did he awaken and succeed in opening his eyes. At first his vision was blurred but slowly it cleared. At his feet lay his shattered glasses, without which he should have only barely been able to make out his surroundings. In place of the hustle of the city streets he now saw the trees and thick foliage of an area left to nature. Some animal sounds came from the distance, sounds that he did not recognize. He forced his body into a half-standing position, then managed to finally become fully erect, swaying slightly as he did so.

"This certainly isn't Main Street," he said aloud as he surveyed the scene around him. He moved forward slowly, carefully at first., still slightly uncertain on his feet. He saw everything around him clearly, but before he could spend time pondering this mystery he heard strange sounds approaching from somewhere behind him, growing quickly closer. He ran swiftly as he could and hid behind one of the larger plants. As he peeked through the leaves he saw several small animals running along, the forest floor. The physical appearance of the animals startled him. Although he had taken many walks through forests in his college days, he had never seen any animals like these. They seemed to be about ten inches long with faces vaguely resembling those of squirrels, and long, very thin legs ending in paws and a dark brown, short fur covering their bodies. They moved with short, graceful steps, not moving in fear but apparently for the sheer enjoyment of being together and traveling through the world.

The animals soon disappeared into the forest growth and relative quiet returned again. As Mark looked carefully around him it became evident that he was on the border between the forest and a swampy area. To his left large amounts of pooled water were visible. He noticed that the kinds of plants differed between the forest and the swamp. The trees on his right bore the broad green leaves of a deciduous forest, but the leaves were none that he was familiar with. The more he looked at the plants the more he realized that there were no forms at all that he could identify, many of the plants having shapes far stranger than anything, he had ever seen in any forest he had walked.

Although the overhead growth was also thick, Mark could catch glimpses of the sun. "That's not the right sun," he said quietly to himself, a puzzled look coming over him. "It should be yellow and much smaller." he was beginning to become frightened, and stood back from the trees to try and get a clearer look at the sky. As he did he stepped into a pool of water, throwing him off balance, resulting in a loud splash as he fell backwards into the water.

The sounds of the forest and swamp both stopped for a few moments in response to the sudden splash, then slowly began their series of calls again as no further signs of danger occurred. Mark stood carefully, then started to make his way through the thick growth of plants. He pushed past some tall, thin plants which suddenly withdrew their tentacled tops into their tube-like shells. Mark jumped at the suddenness of the movement.

"That's it," he said to himself. "I've got to calm down." He took a few deep breaths and tried to relax his body and his mind, He continued walking and began to leave the swamp behind as he started to go deeper into the forest. He finally reached a slight clearing and sat down on a rock. A glance upward failed to aid his composure as he now saw the presence of not one but three suns in the sky. One was the large white star he saw at first; another was a smaller, rose colored star and the third was a very small, red dwarf star.

"Right," he said to himself, breathing out slowly. "Either I'm dreaming, or something has happened to me and am no longer on earth or on any other planet in our solar system." He looked around him and continued talking to himself. "That, at least, would explain the three suns and why I can't recognize any of the plants, not that I really loved that botany course that much."

He thought to himself for a bit and then spoke aloud once more. "But three suns? 1 thought you couldn't have planets orbiting three suns and still have any hope of life on them."

At that moment the air was pierced by the loud cries of a bird that flew down from the trees,a little over Mark's head, and then off into the distance.

"So much for the textbooks,"Mark said to himself.

He decided to move to a spot where the forest growth seemed to be slightly thinner. In a short while he came to a river flowing serenely through the landscape.

"Well," he said, "this at least solves the problem of getting some water." He knelt by the edge of the river. Cupping his hands he dipped them into the water, than raised his hands and drank deeply.

"Tastes good enough," he though. "Doesn't have the chemical taste of water from the tap," he continued as his mind started to turn towards the problem of food. He had not eaten since before his visit to the psychiatrist and was now rather hungry. Looking around he saw to his right that the river meandered off somewhere into the distance. Behind him was the edge of the forest, beyond that the swamp. Overhead were a few wisps of clouds bathed by the light of the three suns. To his left stretched a moderately hilly plain, covered by some grass-like plant. In none of these directions did he spot any potential food sources.

He walked further along the river's edge, allowing himself to enjoy the warmth of the suns and the gentle sound of the river in its movements. He realized that he faced potential starvation. Even if he could find food he could not be sure that it would be usable by a human body. It could be poisonous or simply indigestible. Still, he knew he had to try something sooner or later.

He watched the smooth flow of the water for a while, letting that calm him. He saw the gentle bending of some of the taller plants as they swayed in the breeze.

"At least here I might find peace," he though as he looked at the water. He bent down and noticed some short plants that looked somewhat like cattails but with a thicker stem and a shorter, broader top. He carefully touched the plant then picked off one top and tried to open it. After a few moments he figured how to, managing to split the top down one side and expose the soft, pulpy insides.

"This looks as good as anything else to try," he thought to himself as he bit into the pulpy interior. He found the taste rather bland but still filling. He ate two more of the plants and then drank some more water.

"Well," he said aloud, "if that's poisonous then I've from a few minutes to maybe a few hours to live. If it's not poison I just might stand a slight chance of surviving." He found an area of snort grass by the river and decided to rest, lying; down and putting his head on his hands. He closed his eyes,, opening himself to the soothing sounds and the gentle warmth around him.

Back in the swamp, at the spot where Mark had appeared in the world a shimmer began to form in the air. Eerie sounds as from a tortured dimension began to move through the air as the shimmering filled with electrical sparks dancing to some ancient, hideously obscene melody. Slowly a blackness oozed from the air and where the blackness touch death followed. Plants withered and died as if someone had poured acid upon them. The shimmer disappeared as the blackness lay upon the surface of the land.

At the intrusion of this malignant life form into the world a sharp warning note sounded from far away. Mark heard the note and sat up., wondering where it could be coming from. It stopped in a few moments and the normal sounds of the world resumed.

Far away an old, old figure looked at a massive crystal hanging suspended in the air over a circular pit. The figure looked deep into the crystal, seeing the cause of the warning. Others in the world also heard the sound and shuddered for it had only been a short time since their world had been cleansed of one evil.

Mark's attention, meanwhile, had shifted to the sound of some small animal moving slowly through the tall grass a few feet away. He tensed his body slightly, unsure whether to prepare to run or simply to observe. He laid back down and now he turned his head and opened his eves slowly. He saw the grasses bend away from each other as the movement neared, now obviously coming directly towards him, but without any great speed or attempt to conceal its movement. The tall grasses ended and the source of the noise appeared.

Mark's eyes widened as he forced himself to avoid jumping up. He saw that the sounds had been made by a child, but not a human child. They had been made by a pod child, exactly as he had seen them appear in the movie he loved.

The child was dressed in a loose fitting brown homespun, with a small cap on her head, banded in red with the rest being the same brown shade as her other clothes. She looked at him, her eyes wide with wonder, and when he made no movement towards her she began to edge slightly closer.

"Hello," Mark said in as soft a voice as he could manage. "Are you really a podling child?"

The girl continued looking at him, too shy to reply and unaware of the meaning of his strange-sounding words. She was not easily within arms reach of him. Mark very slowly sat up, watching her, trying not to make any moves that would frighten her away. When she did not run away, he smiled.

"Where is your mother?" he asked. He looked around but could not see any signs of other faces watching him. He held his hand out to the child and she touched it. He looked her hand over closely, marveling at how small it was compared to his. Mark thought and then realized that he was probably about the height of a Skeksis and hoped that would not cause any problems if he became fortunate enough to meet other podlings.

As the girl continued to look at his hand Mark finally admitted to himself that he was really on Thra. This was not any dream. And if Thra was real, and the podlings were real, then probably Jen, Kira and Aughra were likewise real. .

Then his face darkened for a moment."On the other hand," he thought, "How do I know when I am in Thra's history. For all I know the Skeksis could still be in control or not even created yet." His face darkened as yet another train of thought appeared. "Of course I could be totally mad imagining all of this and actually locked up in some asylum somewhere." He shrugged his shoulders. "If it's madness I may as well enjoy it," he thought as he turned his attention back to the podling child.

The smile began to return to his face as the girl started to swing his hand back and forth, holding it in her tiny fingers. Mark relaxed as he watched her.

"Of course, if Kira does exist and has met Jen," he thought, "then no matter how much I love her I couldn't allow myself to interfere. It wouldn't be right. She loves him and that is the way it should be. Still, maybe I could at least enjoy her friendship."

He started to sing softly. The girl looked up at him and seemed to enjoy his singing as she continued to play with his hand.

Meanwhile Ydra, Kira's adaptive mother, watched hidden in the tall grasses. She and several other of the podling mothers had taken their children for a walk to enjoy the day and to have a nice picnic when one child wandered away. Leaving most of the mothers to watch the other children Ydra and three others began their search. When they had heard the sound of strange singing they approached carefully, unsure who or what was making the unusual musical sounds. The love of music was deeply ingrained in them and they recognized the sounds as being warm and friendly, even though the words were totally unknown to them.

When they saw the little pod child swinging the hand of some large, alien creature they were frightened, and for a moment their movements were frozen by their fear. The alien was far larger than anything they had seen since the days of the garthim and the Skeksis, at least for the land creatures. They saw the alien smiling, singing in its own tongue and apparently quite pleased to be entertaining the child. Ydra sensed with the intuitive nature of the pod people that this stranger to their world was no threat to the child or to them. She motioned for the others to remain quiet and continue watching.

The girl took a little ball out of her pocked and tossed it to Mark. He gently tossed it back to her and they went on playing thus for several minutes.

"If only my own people could accept me as freely as you do," he said to the podling child. B now Ydra felt she could approach the creature in safety so she slowly moved away from the grasses and into Mark's vision.

Mark heard the movement and looked. "Hello, he said gently. "Are you her mother?" Ydra moved closer, unable to understand any of his words but sensing from the tone of his voice a nonthreatening question. She took the little girl's hand in her own and looked directly at him.

She was now close enough for him to study her features carefully. His mind whirled in momentary confusion and then he spoke. "Ydra?" he asked, unsure of his identification of her.

Ydra was startled at the sound of her name, for she could recognize that, even though it was pronounced strangely. Mark looked down at the little girl and told her that it was time for her to leave. Ydra pulled the girl's arm slightly and the child turned quickly to her and spoke rapidly, refusing to move.

"It seams," Mark said, "that the child is slightly less than anxious to leave."He laughed softly.

Ydra looked deep into Mark's eyes. "Oneka mala?" she asked.

"Sorry," he answered, shrugging his shoulders, "but I can't understand you, probably no more than you can understand me." As he spoke he heard another movement and saw that the other mothers had appeared at the edge of the grass, eying him with wonder.

He shook his head for a moment, realizing that the world of fantasy had somehow, against every single scientific principle that he knew, had become reality. He also knew that everything around him appeared to be very, very real. "Curiouser and curiouser," he said to himself.

Suddenly a howling sound , began near them and from the woods burst a strange half weasel, half dog animal. The pod mothers turned to run, Ydra gabbing the child and lifting her into her arms.

It took less than a moment for Mark react. In an instant he was on his feet, yelling and rushing at the unwelcome creature. The animal looked at the strange alien bearing swiftly down upon it and decided to seek its prey in a safer place. It turned and ran swiftly away, leaving, Mark still yelling at it, throwing a few stones he found in the direction of its retreat.

He turned to see if the podlings had all left, but Ydra remained, still holding the girl against her. She put the child down and walked over to Mark. Now he was better able to compare his size with that of the podlings. Ydra seemed be slightly less than a third of his height, while the little girl was around a foot tall.

Ydra took Mark's hand and started to pull as she had with the child.

"Mark smiled at Ydra and followed as she led him to the other podling mothers who had run away. In a few minutes they reached the place where the rest of the mothers and children were waiting. A few cries of alarm came from them upon first seeing Mark, but Ydra talked quickly to them, reassuring them that this new arrival in their world was not hostile; indeed it had just saved them from an attack by as predator, and it didn't sing too badly, either.

A few hours later night was falling over Thra while Mark sat outside of one of the podling homes, eating something that reminded him of cheese, some vegetables, and some sort of a delicious type of bread.

Bowls of juices were given to him, the juices all having pleasant, slightly sweet tastes, easily satisfying his thirst. The pod people still looked at him, talking amongst themselves, gingerly touching him here and there. They were enjoying themselves and their newfound friend, and soon the music started along with the dancing.

None of the stringed instruments were large enough for him to play so he contented himself with humming along with their songs. Once in a while, during a break in the music, he would begin a song he knew and the Podling musicians would quickly pick up the tune, improvising as they went along. Everyone was enjoying themselves and it was far into the night before the podlings retired to their homes for sleep.

Mark lay down on some soft grasses that had been gathered and had little difficulty drifting off into a peaceful slumber.

The next morning the podlings were up early, visiting him, talking, to him even though he didn't understand a single word they said.

Ydra was again standing near Mark. "Does Aughra exist?" Mark asked her. "Do you know where she is?"

Ydra nodded her head at the sound of Aughra's name and pointed out the direction where she could be found. With much difficulty he managed to get Ydra to understand that he was going to go in search of Aughra. Ydra called to the other podlings and they ran over to wish their friend goodbye.

Mark smiled at the podlings, especially at the little girl as she came to say goodbye to him. He picked her up and held her against him, then returned her softly to the ground. He began to walk in the direction Ydra had shown, waving goodbye as he moved away.

He walked quickly and within a few hours was able to spot the hill on which Aughra's observatory had been built.

"Well," he said to himself, "of her observatory is in one piece then it means either the garthim haven't attacked or it was somehow rebuilt."

Recognizing the possibility that the Skeksis and garthim might still exist added a degree of caution to Mark's movements. He looked around often, trying to spot any crystal bats or anything else that would come from the evil of the Skeksis.

Soon he arrived at the foot of the tall hill. The three suns were bright overhead as he made his arduous way up the side of the hill. Although it was not a mountain it still presented a formidable obstacle to him. The climb proved difficult and before long it seemed that every muscle in his body had decided to hurt with the top still a good distance away.

After several hours and a number of rests Mark arrived outside the entrance to Aughra's observatory. An intricate design of spirals, triangles and pyramids met his eyes wherever he looked. The door was covered by more spiral designs with various alchemical symbols added at particular points. The door itself was about five feet high and stood slightly opened.

After a few minutes he knocked on the door, then waited. Sounds of a rather cross, gruff nature came through the opening, proceeding the arrival of a gnarled, four-fingered hand belonging to Aughra, Keeper of Secrets. The hand opened the door further and Aughra soon stood before him.

Aughra had been born many, many centuries ago and had lost one of her eyes observing a Great Conjunction of the three suns. She had been the friend of the Urskeks before they so tragically split into the Skeksis and the urRu.

They had taught her much and had built her original observatory. From them she learned various forms of meditation and the importance of music and numbers. She used their teachings and her own considerable intelligence to study the nature of her world and of the other suns and planets near Thra. She could, to some degree, predict the future, and this ability led the Urskeks to rebuild her observatory just before they left Thra, right after the healing of the Great Crystal.

They had replaced all of Aughra's lost equipment and had included many new things that she was still attempting to understand. She had spent some time with Jan and Kira, trying to help them however she could, but most of her time and attention had been devoted to studying the new things the Urskeks had left behind.

As Mark watched, Aughra stepped from the doorway, carrying a beaker in her hand. Mark had regarded the Aughra of the movie as being part scientist, part philosopher. This Aughra had the same physical appearance to the Aughra of the movie. except that she possessed both of her eyes, her lost eye being restored by the Urskeks as another of their gifts to her.

"Aughra," Mark said. "I came in peace. I know..."

He was unable to finish his statement as Aughra walked right up to him, looked deep into his ayes, and handed a beaker up to him.

Mark took the beaker from her and watched as she motioned for him to drink its contents. He stared at the beaker than at her. "Trusting others has never been easy for me," he said softly. "Still, I don't see why you'd want to hurt me."

He lifted the-beaker to his mouth and drained the contents. Moments later he was on the ground, unconscious.

Aughra looked at his prone form, muttered something to herself and returned to her observatory.

Chapter Three

When Mark opened his eyes he found that he was still outside of Aughra's observatory. He shook his head to try and clear it and then sat up.

"So much for not trying to hurt me," he said aloud to himself. At the sound of his words Aughra appeared at the observatory door.

"Hurt you?" Aughra not try to hurt you," Aughra said, watching Mark.

"I understood every word you said," Mark said in surprise. "But I know you can't possibly know English."

"English? What English?" Aughra replied. "You speak fine now. Urskeks knew what. to do. They left potion to help." Aughra took a few steps closer to Mark and then frowned. "Why you come to see Aughra?" she asked.

Mark stood up slowly. Why am I here?" he began. "For one thing, here doesn't exist, or at least it's not supposed to. It's just a fantasy , a movie, a story, a dream and yet it's real."

"Humph.." Aughra went, putting her hands on her shoulders. "You talk foolish. Look around you, all is real."

Mark did as she said and looked around. He saw the observatory, the short plants and grasses growing on the hilltop, the vast expanse of the plain sweeping towards the horizon and, all the time, Aughra watching him.

"Yes, I accept its reality," he said to her. "I still don't know why or how I came to be here, though. One moment I was on Earth, then there was something coming towards me and the next thing I knew I woke up here on Thra."

Aughra studied him, then muttered something that sounded to him like "not ready yet."

"YOU study with me," she said to him. "Learn here, sleep in big room."

"Study what?" Mark asked.

"Study numbers, how think, how look inward. Prepare. Be ready."

"Prepare and be ready for what, Aughra?" Mark asked. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"You know soon," Aughra said. "Now much work to do, little time."

Realizing that he was getting nowhere, Mark decided to try and find the answer to other questions. "Tell me, Aughra," he began, " when in Thra's history are we? Do the Skeksis exist, or have they gone?"

Aughra looked at him. "Skeksis gone., urRu gone, Urskeks gone, not long ago," was her reply."Wait here," she said, then turned and walked back into her laboratory.

Mark heard a low rumbling sound, then saw part of the observatory wall open. He stood up and walked over to where he could see a snort corridor opening into a large, nearly empty room. Aughra came out of the observatory and entered the corridor then moved to the room beyond. Mark followed.

"This is where you sleep," she began. "Time yet for work now." She deposited a load of different objects on a bed made of grasses and covered it with a brown, homespun blanket. Mark saw a mix of various papers, metal and stone symbols, and a few instruments he recognized as being scientific in nature.

Aughra bent over the bed and picked up a small stone symbol. She gave it to Mark and he examined it closely. What he saw was a triangular stone symbol, each corner having its own inlaid triangle. The symbol of the Great Conjunction, circles within a triangle, was in the center of the stone. Around that symbol was another circle from which radiated three lines, one towards each corner of the triangle. The lines connected to a crescent like shape surrounding a circle in the center of each of the smaller triangles making up the corners of the larger triangular stone.

"What does this mean to you?" she asked him.

"I don't really know what it means," Mark replied. "I don't see any writing, just the symbols on the stone."

"Aughra knows what it means," she began."This corner God," she said, pointing to one corner of the symbol. "This one individual, this one cosmic," she said as she pointed to the two remaining corners. "Between God and individual is preservation. Between God and cosmic is creation. This last one here, between cosmic and individual is destruction. Preserve Thra or destroy it, that is your task."

A look of intense worry crossed Mark's face. He thought he had found a home and friends, but now that seemed to be already threatened. "Aughra," he began, "I don't see how this relates to me and my being here on Thra. I'm sorry, but I'm really confused."

Aughra placed her hands on her hips then looked briefly at the sky where dark clouds had begun to appear from the west, threatening a major rainstorm. Although rainfall was plentiful on Thra, there was something different about this storm that was approaching, something that reminded her of the storm that happened before the Crystal had been healed.

"I have seen," she began slowly," in the Crystal."

She hesitated for a minute, then continued. "Yesterday, Aughra in castle," she replied. "Heard crystal sound warning. Go to chamber and look into crystal. There Aughra see you come, walk through swamp and forest, then go to river. Aughra then see something else."

"What else?" ,Mark asked her.

"Not know," Aughra replied. "Something not belong here, something evil. It come with you. Must be from your world. Aughra watch. It was purest black. Thing stayed on ground, killed the plants. It weak now but maybe grow strong soon. You must stop it."

"How can I do that?" Mark asked.

"Don't know," Aughra replied. "Don't know."

The more Mark thought about it the more depressed he became. He had entered Thra a worn, used up person, feeling that he was near the end of his life. This world had quickly restored him, had raised his hopes, giving him a possible chance to enjoy life. To know that he had brought something here that could destroy plants now, maybe everything else later, this was too much for him to easily accept. He felt that happiness was once more being snatched away from him, that his lot in life was always to suffer and to spread suffering to whomever he met.

He looked at Aughra and spoke softly. "If I were to die, would that stop this thing?"

"No good," Aughra said. "If you die evil grow forever. It comes from your World. Crystal tell Aughra that you only one who can destroy evil; now you see why stone symbol say individual so important?"

"Yes," Mark replied, wearily. "How much time do we have?"

"Don't know," Aughra answered. "We must go to castle, look into Crystal. Maybe it will tell you."

The storm was fast approaching and it was far too late in the day to begin the journey to the castle. While Aughra returned to her observatory Mark stood thinking. Turning the symbol over and over in his hand,he tried to find a reason why everything good he tried to do seemed to end up in failure. He loved Kira, he loved this world and now he had placed both in the greatest danger possible. It was his fault, and he didn't even know if there was anything he could do about it.

He walked through a short corridor and soon stood looking into the distance. Two moons were visible in the sky, both far smaller than the Earth's moon, but still reflecting enough light for Mark to see clearly. The open plain spread before him and further on there were some tall mountains.

"This beautiful world," he said. "I've so wanted to make my life here, but instead of life I've brought death." He shook his head sadly and returned to his room where he was asleep in moments on the comfortable grass bed.

Chapter Four

A rough hand shook him, bringing Mark awake. When he opened his eyes he saw Aughra's face staring down at him. "Time to go," she said. "Sleep later. Much work to do now."

"Aughra," he said, "do you think there is really any chance of me stopping that thing?"

"Don't know," she replied. "But must try. You like Thra?" She looked at him with a piercing gaze.

"I love Thra," he replied. "I'll do anything I can to save it but I just don't see what a loser like me can do. I'm not that powerful or that brilliant and that thing, whatever it is, seems extremely dangerous."

"You love Kira?" Aughra asked.

Mark was startled for a moment. "Yes," he replied softly. "How did you know?"

"Aughra knows many things," she said. "Aughra knows you love Thra, love Kira. Maybe love Aughra." Aughra hrumphed to herself. "Love is gift, great gift. Use it."

Mark quickly decided he would ask Aughra what she meant and have her explain it in detail once he had become fully awake and dressed. Those plans were disrupted when he began to remove his blanket and look for his clothes.

"Aughra," Mark said slowly. "What happened to my clothes?" Mark had a habit of sleeping with little on, placing his clothes on a nearby chair at night so he could don them in the morning. Last night he had left his clothes at the foot of his bed and a quick glance had told him that they were now no longer there.

"Clothes gone," Aughra replied.

"Gone?" Mark said, a slight note of panic starting to appear in his voice. "What happened to them?"

"Clothes burned," Aughra said, laughing slightly.

Mark sat up on the edge of the bed, draping the blanket over his legs. "Would you kindly tell me why they were burned?" Mark said, struggling to control his anger at learning all his clothes had been neatly disposed of while he slept.

"Clothes stank," Aughra said.

Mark thought about that for a moment. "'Well, I did fall in the swamp once," he said, "so I guess that might have caused them to smell a little."

"Swamp not smell so bad," Aughra said. "Other smells on clothes. "Must be where you come from that smells so bad. Almost make Aughra sick." Aughra made a disgusted look, then continued. "Aughra take them and burn. Now no more smell." She pointed to a small basin in one corner of the room. "Water there," she said. "You wash, maybe you smell better."

Mark admitted to himself that the smells of pollution, from cigarette smoke to car exhausts probably had permeated his clothes so he couldn't blame Aughra for getting rid of them, but still it had created a rather delicate situation.

"I'll wash," Mark said. "I like to keep myself clean and I was wondering how I would do that here." He hesitated a moment, expecting Aughra to take the hint and leave the room, allowing him to remove the blanket and wash. Aughra, however, just stood there, watching.

Mark knew that the blanket, which had been just barely large enough to provide him any warmth would definitely not be enough to go cover his body, especially if he stood up.

A few more minutes passed in the silent test of wills, and finally Mark stood, holding the blanket as strategically as he could. He walked to the basin, feeling Aughra's eyes on him as he did so. Once there he took a deep breath, then exhaled slowly. He looked once at Aughra, shrugged his shoulders and finally let the blanket drop so he could devote his full attention to washing up.

Aughra looked at him carefully for a moment then made an odd sound under her breath and left the room. A few minutes later she returned with a pile of clothing that she placed on the bed.

"You wear these," she said, looking at Mark.

Mark used a cloth to dry himself off as he walked to the bed, embarrassed at his nakedness. He looked over the clothes and found that they consisted of a brownish top with some spiral designs woven into it, pants of a slightly different shade of brown, and sandals made of some leather-like material that felt quite soft to the touch.

"These are beautiful," he said, admiring the clothes. "But how can they be big enough to fit?"

"Podlings make these," Aughra said. "Bring them here just after dawn. While you slept in the village they measured your body, made clothes, then brought them to Aughra."

Mark began to feel somewhat ashamed. "I guess I smelled bad to them, too" he said.

"Clothes smell bad," Aughra said, then sniffed at him. "You not smell too bad, just clothes. You put these on, feel better , feel more like on belong on Thra."

She left and Mark dressed, enjoying the texture of the clothes and being pleasantly surprised at the nearly perfect fit. He liked the feel of the homespun against his skin and the softness of the shoes on his feet.

"At least my clothes look like they belong on this planet," he said to himself, "even if the person wearing them may not be around long enough to enjoy them fully."

He sighed to himself and stepped into the corridor, then outside the entrance. There were a few wisps of clouds in the sky, and the three suns were shining -brightly, making everywhere he looked seem vibrant and alive.

Aughra came out of the observatory, then closed the door behind her. She was carrying a small pouch and a few other things in her hands as she motioned for Mark to follow her. Soon they were descending a long path down the hill, a way that presented little difficulty; a far cry from Mark's ascent only the day before. Within a few minutes they were at the foot of the hill.

Mark looked at Aughra and saw that the things she had carried had disappeared into a pouch she hung over her shoulder.

As he stood watching, he heard an odd-noise coming from behind some rocks. He prepared to run but saw that Aughra was standing unconcerned. In moments a strange animal appeared, looking only in the vaguest way like the horses he was familiar with from Earth. The animal was built much closer to the ground, had far more hair and a slightly shorter head. It moved close to Aughra then knelt down on the ground, allowing her to get onto its back. Jerkily the creature then rose, Aughra holding tightly to its long flowing mane.

Aughra looked at Mark. "You have long legs. You keep up with Aughra. " She urged the animal to begin its journey and soon they were moving at a brisk pace towards the Crystal Castle.

As they journeyed Aughra continued to tell him about numbers, symbols and about Thra and the wonders of life he would find. He was able to see the beauty of the world through the eyes of another, from someone that knew the world and loved it deeply. He was astonished at Aughra's depth of knowledge and understanding, but was also worried as it showed her just how ignorant he was of life here in this world. Sure, the movie had given him a lot of information, but that was a small drop in the bucket compared to the reality of actually being on the planet and seeing it close-up.

"Aughra, he said,"it's still hard or me to accept all of this as real."

"Accept it," she told him. "Accept your love of Thra and grow on it." They proceeded further, Mark marveling at the variety of plants he found everywhere he looked. Mark told Aughra about his life on earth, about his life there and how he just felt he never really belonged.

He also told her of the types of problems that faced the Earth. Finally, he even told her that he had attempted to take his own life but had failed.

"That wrong thing to do," Aughra said. "You have life for reason, even if you don't know what reason is." She looked into his eyes. "You not do that here, try to kill yourself?"

Mark returned her gaze. "No, Aughra," he replied. "Thra is already more of a home to me than Earth ever was. Even if I am an outsider in this world I will still love Thra and I'll do whatever I have to do to try and save it from the evil that followed me here,"

Mark thought for a few minutes before he spoke again. "Still," he said, "I realize that living here won't be easy. There's so much to learn about Thra and I guess I'll more or less be alone, but maybe that's how it should be. Sometimes I'm not sure I'm even a human being after at all. Maybe I'm part alien or part demon. I don't know.

Aughra looked at him and snorted. "You feel too sorry for yourself,"she said. "Podlings like you, Aughra likes you. You not bad person. Different, maybe, but different doesn't have to mean bad."

As Mark looked into the distance he saw two figures approaching over the crest of a small hill. "Is that Jen and Kira?" he asked Aughra.

"Yes," Aughra replied. "I send message to them to meet us here, go with us to castle."

A small ball of fur rolled and bounced closer and soon Fizzgig stood a few feet away, barking furiously at Mark. Jen and Kira arrived soon after and stood watching the human.

"This human," Aughra said, "Takes Thra as new home." Aughra looked at Mark. "He is friend," she said. "We go to castle, learn about new evil on Thra. Human says he is willing to die to save our home, You come with us, learn much, maybe even help."

Aughra watched Mark as he looked at Kira, unable to take his ayes away her. She was as beautiful to him in real life, perhaps even more so, then she had been in the movie. As he looked at her he remembered that he had vowed not to interfere between her and Jen for any reason at all. He would have to hide his feelings, so he let his eyes look down at the ground while he composed himself.

After telling Fizzgig to be quiet, Kira moved closer to Mark and looked up at him. "Hello" she said in her soft, warm voice. "My name is Kira."

Mark looked at her. "My name is Mark," he said. He was a tangle of emotions with love, duty, fear and ethics all fighting amongst themselves. He was unable to say more until Jan walked to Kira's side. "I'm Jen.," he said.

Mark looked at Jan and Kira and he could save the deep love between them as Kira held Jen's hand.

"I'm sorry for what has happened," Mark said. "The evil has come with me into your world, and now all of us are in danger."

"Can we fight it?" Jen asked Aughra as they all began moving once more towards the castle.

"Don't know.." Aughra said from atop her mount. "We look into Crystal, maybe see answer, know what to do."

As they walked Mark told Jan and Kira bout his feelings towards Thra, and how much he loved the planet. He asked them what had happened to them since the Urskeks left, and they told him how they had lived with the pod people and had begun to clean the Gelfling ruins, hoping to live there. Mark said little about himself, moving to other subjects whenever a question about his own life arose.

Finally Kira looked questioningly at him. "Why don't you tell us about yourself?" she said. "You hide yourself like some hunted animal."

Mark looked at Kira, his eyes conveying the loneliness he felt within him. "If I were to tell you about myself," he said quietly,"I'm not sure that you would accept me. Perhaps you would but than again you might not and I'd not want to lose your friendship this soon."

"Why should we not like you?" Kira asked.

"I'm not from Thra," he answered. "And I've brought some kind of evil thing into this world after the two of you suffered so terribly getting one evil out already."

"He not want the one he love to hate him," Aughra said.

"Aughra," yelled Mark. He looked at Kira, then to Jen and back to Aughra. Then he ran ahead, walking alone, fighting tears of anger and loneliness, the tears winning the battle. Behind him Aughra told Jen and Kira of Mark's words to her, how he loved Kira out accepted her love for Jen and how he felt he would not want to have his feelings come between them.

"He guards his love," Aughra said. "He loneliest being Aughra ever see," she concluded.

Jen and Kira looked at each other, then ran to where Mark was walking. Jen took his left hand, Kira his right. "You can't help but love Kira," Jen said, smiling. "She's so, so-" he continued.

"Lovable?" Kira asked. "Beautiful? Graceful?"

Jen looked at her, a twinkle in his eyes. "So helpless," he said, laughing.

"Helpless?" Kira said, mocking indignity. "I'll show you how helpless I am." With that she released Mark's hand and chased Jen, quickly catching him and wrestling him to the ground. Soon she sat by Jen's side, laughing.

After a few moments the Gelfling rose and returned to Mark's side and once again took his hands. Aughra followed on her mount.

A little later Mark suddenly stopped, then stooped down and carefully placed his hand near the ground. In a moment he raised his hand and examined a small butterfly-like animal that he had found. It held onto his hand while he looked at it, then flew away, Mark watching its beautiful wings moving off into the distance.

Kira and Jen looked at Mark and smiled.

Chapter Five

A few hours later they arrived at the crest of a hill where they could see the castle of the Great Crystal. Mark looked in awe as his eyes beheld the dazzling whiteness of the castle, the graceful symmetry it held, and the sheer enormity of its size. They moved on and soon entered the castle through the tubular entrance used by the urRu in their triumphant return to the place of their origin.

They moved through elaborate corridors until they finally stood in the chamber of the Great Crystal. Mark looked around him, trying to take in every detail, but finding the task impossible. He examined the floor around the circular pit, looked at the various symbols inscribed in precise locations a1ong spiral and circular paths, and finally he looked at the Crystal of Truth itself.

It hung majestically above the pit, its brilliance filling the room with a bright glow. Mark looked but was unable to find anything supporting the crystal as it seemingly hung in its defiance of gravity.

''Stand there.," Aughra said to Mark, pointing to a particular spot on the floor. She indicated to Jen and Kira where they ware to stand, then she moved to another symbol engraved on the floor.

"Now think," Aughra said. "Think of Thra and the evil that has entered here. Think of Mark and his place in Thra. Concentrate. Open yourself to the Crystal."

The four of them stared intently into the Crystal, each trying to open their awareness to it so that it could, somehow, sense their presence and their need. Within a few moments the interior of the Crystal grew cloudy. Soon an image formed of their world, showing where Mark had first appeared in the swamp. They saw a shimmer form in the air and saw Mark fall into their world. They watched as he awoke and began to explore.

They saw the look of wonder on his face as he saw the life of Thra around him. They saw him relax, meet the poling child and visit their village. They saw his visit to Aughra.

As they watched the Crystal began to emit a low, ominous hum and they saw a second shimmer in the image and the blackness as it entered Thra. They saw the evil take the form of an energy cloud, hovering low above the ground, waiting, gathering its strength while Mark lay by t the river.

"What is it?'' Kira asked.

Almost as if in answer to her question the image changed to show the Earth. Scenes of violence and destruction appeared, scenes showing the worst that humankind could be. Military parades, pollution, bombs exploding, riots in the streets all flashed quickly before their eyes. Drug users, killers, violent lunatics all paraded before their eyes.

"That is the world I came from," _Mark said. "There was some good there, but there was also much that was evil. And that evil seemed to be constantly growing in strength as humans found ever new ways to hate other humans.

The image changed and the watchers saw Mark's life pass quickly before them. They saw his attempts at friendship rebuffed, his life becoming more lonely as the years passed.

"I never fit in," Mark said, his voice quavering slightly. "I spent my time reading and dreaming, and I tended to question everything. I saw what I thought the world should be like and what it really was and that made me so sad, so very sad."

They saw his attempt at suicide and his talk with the psychiatrist. They could sense his hopelessness and his ever growing despair.

They saw the approach of the storm, the arrival of the meteor and Mark's passage from earth. The images flashed quickly to the present as they saw themselves in the Crystal Chamber. They sensed Mark's love for Thra, for Kira, his envy of Jen and the growing love he developed for all of them. They could even sense his love and respect for Aughra.

The Crystal image suddenly darkened, then once again showed the energy cloud from earth. They learned that the cloud was composed of the negative psychic energy so prevelant on Earth, energy that had come to Thra to prey on an innocent world. As they watched they learned that it moved only at night, and that it took power from the killing of innocent beings. They saw it destroy plants and some small animals, and they saw it increase in size as it did so. They knew that, for the moment, they were safe but that, unstopped, the cloud would eventually become powerful enough to move at any time during the day or night, free to kill at will and live on the death agonies of its prey.

The image faded and the Crystal returned to its translucent form. Of what their own future actually held, they saw nor felt anything.

Mark stood, head bowed. Aughra looked at him, her eyebrows raised slightly. Kira watched, her eyes expressing her sadness. Jen watched Mark also, now fully realizing that another loved Kira as deeply as he did and would, if necessary, die to protect her.

Mark finally raised his head, tears slowly moving down his face. "What can I do?" he asked, the anguish in his voice evident to all. "I've brought the evil here but I still don't know how to stop it."

"It is not your fault," Aughra said. "Evil; always preys on the innocent. Thra is now your world. Do you want you do to help her?"

Mark looked at her, then at the Crystal. using every bit of self control he could. He calmed his mind, forcing it to concentrate on the actual problem of what could be done. As he concentrated another image began to form in the Crystal, an image of the valley of the urRu. A feeling came with the image, a feeling that there was, somewhere in the valley, something that was essential in the fight against the evil from Earth, an undefined something that must be found, and soon.

The image faded as quickly as it arose, and the Crystal became silent.

"That is the valley of my Masters," Jen said.

Mark turned towards the other three. "What is needed will be found there. I'll leave immediately."

"We will go together," Jen spoke."

"I'm not going to place you in greater danger than you already area. That thing that's out there might be able to sense my presence, for all I know. If I head towards the valley then it might, too. " "It soon be night outside. You go now, evil cloud maybe find you before you get to valley. End of Mark. Sleep, here tonight, go to valley in morning."

Mark thought for a moment, then replied."You're right, of course," Mark replied. "I'll sleep for now, then start for the valley at the first sign of daylight.

Jen walked up to Mark. "You will not go alone, "he said. "My masters lived there. I lived there for most of my life. I know the valley and where to look for things. You will not walk alone on Thra."

Kira joined them and looked at Mark. "I'm going too," she said.

"You take Gelfling with you," Aughra said. "They help you look. Aughra go back home, maybe learn more there."

Jan, Kira and Mark followed Aughra out of the Crystal Chamber. They walked through various corridors until they finally arrived at the sleeping rooms of the Skeksis, now cleaned of all presence of the Skeksis and restored to its original beauty.

"We sleep now," Aughra said, "then leave early." With that she turned and left, entering another of the sleeping rooms. Jen and Kira walked into one of the other rooms. Mark began to move off to find a room for himself when Jen spoke up.

"You should not sleep alone," he began. You can sleep in the same room with us. Most of these rooms have more than one bed.

"I'd like to,"Mark said. "It's actually kind of frightening sleeping alone all the time," he said, more to himself than to the Gelfling.

In a short time the two Gelfling were in one bed and Mark in another, although with his height his feet did tend to hang over the end of the bed somewhat. Jen and Kira saw that and laughed. They all talked some more and then, one by one, drifted into slumber.

Chapter Six

Their sleep was broken in the middle of the night by a warning note from the Great Crystal. They stumbled sleepily from their room to make their way to the Crystal Chamber. When they arrived they saw Aughra already there, staring into the Crystal. There they all saw an image of a moon-lit swamp, and the energy creature moving slowly through the plants, touching them and bringing instant death. As they watched they saw the cloud capture sleeping animals and absorb their bodies into its mass, releasing energy flashes within the creature, these increasing in brilliance as it more animals were absorbed.

"It grows stronger," Aughra said, watching the images before her. "Soon it strong enough to leave swamp, attack others."

Kira buried her head against Jen's shoulder as she watched the horror unfolding in the crystal.

Mark watched without saying a word. Aughra looked briefly at him and noticed a hardening in his posture. His face grew taunt as he watched the destruction unfold. Finally he spoke.

"I will not allow Earth's evil to destroy Thra," he said, the determination in his voice evident to all. "There is no doubt in my mind that this is the type of evil that infects the Earth, and it wants to infect Thra in the same way."

Suddenly the movement of the creature changed and it seemed to move directly towards them in the Crystal. It filled the image and then suddenly vanished.

They talked about various matters for a short time then returned to their beds. Early in the morning they set out on their separate ways Aughra returning to her observatory while Mark and the Gelfling headed for the valley of the urRu.

They were driven by the urgency of their need and, before many hours had passed, they stood looking into the valley. Following Jen they entered the valley along the spiral ramp, down to the living area of the Mystics. The loom of urUtt the weaver was still standing, while various cloths and implements were still in evidence. They could almost feel the presence of the gentle urRu still there, spreading a soft blanket of calm on their tense nerves.

Mark looked around at the caves and the standing stones. "I wish I knew just what it was we were looking for," he said. "I know the urRu were peaceful," he continued, "but perhaps they left behind some kind of scroll that would give us an idea of how to at least contain the creature.

For hours they searched through each of the caves, trying to find anything they could use in their battle against the energy creature, but their search was in vain. As the sunlight began to dim they lit small fires and used torches to continue their search. Just before dusk Mark decided to examine more closely the floor in the valley where the circular ring of standing stones was to be found.

"We must have overlooked something," Mark said. "We couldn't have come all the way here for nothing." As he spoke he moved closer to the circle of stones. He passed between two of the stones just as the dying rays of the sun touched them. Suddenly he grabbed his head in his hands and fell to the ground.

"Mark!" Jen yelled as he and Kira raced to Mark's side as he struggled to rise from the ground.

"What happened?" Jen asked.

Jen and Kira looked at Mark's face and they saw that his eyes were not focusing on them at all. Instead his expression showed that his mind was somewhere else, no longer responding to the physical world. He rose slowly, then moved to the center of the circular ring. He stooped to the ground and began. digging. Within a few minutes he lifted something from its hiding p1ace. When he dusted it off Jen and Kira could see that it was some form of talisman that could be worn around the neck. Mark lifted the chain over his head and then lowered it, letting the talisman hang upon his chest, its intricate design holding great beauty that could be seen in the arrangement of the spiral shapes, but at the same time giving off a sense of incredible power.

Mark looked at the Gelfling, his eyes still not focused on their level of reality. "Move back," his said, his voice sounding as if, it came from far away. "Move beyond the stones."

Jen and Kira moved back, still watching the human. As soon as they were no longer near the stones they saw Mark lower his arms to his sides. Then he suddenly grew rigid. All the stones in the circle began to glow softly, then more brightly. The light increased in intensity quickly, and soon a second light was being reflected from stone to stone, converging at a central focus, channeling all the light energy directly towards the talisman. A loud peal of thunder rang through the valley as the light hit the talisman and than Mark was thrown backwards by the force of the impact.

The light from the stones vanished and Jen and Kira again ran to Mark's side. Although Mark was not moving, Jen could still see him breathing, so he knew their friend was still alive. They turned Mark over and Kira gasped as she saw what had happened to the front of his body. Where the talisman had been a burnt area was now present. On his chest, still glowing slightly, an image of the talisman had been burned into his skin. Of the talisman itself they could not find a trace.

"Jen, I'm frightened," Kira said.

"I am too," Jen replied. Before he could say anything more they heard a sound resembling a lonely wind in the distance. Slowly the sound changed, starting to form words that Jen could recognize.

"It's the voice of urSu, my master," Jan said excitedly.

"Only a Gelfling" the voice began "or one who is like a Gelfling in their heart could have released the power of these stones. Our world must be in great danger. You have been given a talisman of power, created by the strength of our own energies. Learn to use it wisely. Use it in love, never in hate."

The voice faded, replaced by the natural sounds of the valley around them. Jen and Kira heard Mark moan, then helped him as he tried to stand up.

Tears streamed down Mark's cheeks from the pain of the talisman image being burned into his chest. Kira held his hand as he looked around him.

"I heard the voice," Mark said, fighting to get the words oat. "I now have this," he said, pointing to the image on his chest," but I still don't know what to do. Maybe Aughra will have the answers we seek."

As Mark began to walk around, trying to take his mind off the pain, he looked at Jen and Kira. "Don't ask me how I know this," he began, "but I feel that I have somehow become linked to this planet. It's more than a physical bond, though; it's something almost spiritual in nature. It's as if Thra was trying to talk directly to me. Maybe in time I'll be able to understand what the planet is saying."

Mark looked down at the burned area on his chest. "Gelfling clothes, Gelfling heart, but still not a Gelfling," he said softly. He walked to the entrance of urSu's cave and sat down to rest.

Jen and Kira approached him. "You are a Gelfling to us," they said, smiling.

After he had rested for a few hours Mark and the two Gelfling left the valley of the urRu, heading towards Aughra's home, the night still some hours away.

Chapter Seven

A few hours later they were well on their way to Aughra's when Mark stopped.

"Are you all right?" Kira asked, Jen standing close behind her.

"I think I feel better then I have ever felt before," Mark replied. "As we have been walking I have heard the voices of the rocks, the breezes, the mountains, all the life of Thra. They are saying to me that I am a worthwhile being. The planet has told me that I belong now to her, and that I am welcome here."

Once again they set out, and about mid-afternoon Kira mentioned to Mark that she was thirsty. As she watched Mark shut his eyes and concentrated. "There," he said, pointing to a spot just a short distance away. "We' ll find water over there."

They walked to where he had pointed and found a small stream that flowed out of the ground and then, a short distance later, when flowed back underground

"How did you know the stream was here?" Jen asked.

"I saw it, somehow," Mark replied. "Apparently if I open myself to the planet it will tell me what I need to know."

A few hours later they stood outside the door to Aughra's observatory, a variety of sounds greeting their arrival. Through the open door they could hear the sounds of laughter, singing and mixed voices.

Jen and Kira looked at each other, their eyes alight with wonder. "'Gelfling," they cried and quickly ran inside. Mark watched them go into the building, then he turned to look towards the horizon.

Inside, all seemed to be bedlam as Jen and Kira met a group of Gelfling happily talking and singing. They were warmly greeted by Jora, leader of the Gelfling tribe.

"I am Jora, leader of my tribe. You must be Jen and Kira," he said smiling. "Aughra told us about you and how you got rid of the Skeksis." He hugged Jen and Kira tightly to him.

"I thought Kira and I were the only Gelfling left," Jen said.

"So did Aughra," Jora replied, "but you can see that she was wrong." The room was filled with some thirty Gelfling, all talking and laughing and dodging Aughra's orrery. At that moment an aged Gelfling quietly stepped forward.

"This is Karn, our oldest and wisest member," Jora said.

The Gelfling was far older than any of the others. His eyes were unseeing, and had been so for many ,years, yet he "saw" far better than any of the others. His face bore a ready and warm smile.

"Karn was Aughra's pupil," Jora said. As he was saying this Aughra appeared from around a corner. "Good one he was, too," she added.

"How did you escape the Skeksis?" Jen asked.

"Long ago Karn made a prophecy," Jora replied. "He foretold what would happen with the Great Crystal, the Skeksis and the urRu. He couldn't see how it would a11 end, though, for the future is a composite of many futures. The other Gelfling did not believe him. I and my tribe did, so we all went far away into the wilderness to try and escape. Aughra assumed we had all died, only we survived hidden in tunnels we found deep under a mountain. We stored as much food and water as we could and then we sealed the entrances. If the garthim ever came by all they would have seen would have been mountainside. We waited until Karn told us that the Great Crystal had been healed."

Aughra looked at the Gelfling. "'They all come this morning, wake Aughra. No quiet since."

Jora and the others laughed, then he asked Jen and Kira where the strange being was that Aughra had told him about.

"Mark?" Kira asked. "He was with us." She looked around couldn't see him anywhere. She went to the door and looked outside, seeing him standing, looking at the horizon.

"Come on in, Mark," she called, "and meet the other Gelfling."

Mark turned and entered the observatory with her, Kira hold his hand. "This is Mark," she said to Jora.

The Gelfling stopped their talking when marked appeared. They stared at him for a moment and then slowly began to move nearer to him. A flurry of questions was directed towards him, the last one relating to the symbol that was burned into his chest.

"I'm not exactly sure what this symbol means," he said. "I'm hoping that Aughra might have a clue as to what it stands for, and how to use it."

Aughra was now standing near Mark and was sniffing him. "You smell different," she said. "Not same as before. Smell fine now. Outside fine. How inside?"

Mark looked at Aughra. "Also different," he said. Before he could explain any further a girl Gelfling neared. Mark looked at her, seeing that she was incredibly beautiful and seemed to possess a soft radiance around her.

"I'm Alera," she said,. her voice gentle and soft.

"Hello," Mark said, unable to take his eyes away from her. She moved closer and reached out towards him. He touched her fingers with his, and suddenly both human and Gelfling moved as if a current had run through their bodies, yet without breaking the touch of their fingertips.

While the others watched, silent, Mark and Alera remained touching. Their eyes gazed at each other as their minds filled with images of their lives. They had begun to dreamfast, to see each other's life through the mind's eye, sharing the experiences and feelings each had gone through.

When they finally released their touch they stayed near each other. Alera was looking at Mark, and Mark had a puzzled expression on his face.

"You were dreamfasting," Kira said.

Mark turned to her, speaking as if far away. "Dreamfasting? How can that happen when I'm not a Gelfling?"

"Silly," Kira replied. "You don't have to be a Gelfling to dreamfast. I've done it with the podlings many times."

"Does it happen whenever you touch?" Mark asked.

"No," Kira replied, "only sometimes, when we're very open to others."

"Dreamfasting," Aughra said. "Good. Now how strong bond?"

"What do you mean by bond?" Mark asked as he moved slightly closer to Alera.

"Dreamfasting is a bonding," Karn said, his voice deep and rich. "How strong it is depends on the persons involved. The bond might only be one of friendship and closeness. It could also be very strong, bonding their very souls together."

Aughra walked behind 'Mark and sniffed him again. Her eyebrows rose slightly, and then she turned and spoke to Jen. "Dress like Gelfling," she began, "now smell like Gelfling."

The rest of the evening was spent in celebration as the Gelfling tribe talked to Jen and Kira and made Mark welcome amongst them. They talked briefly of the danger facing them, deciding that in the morning they would hold a council to decide what they should do.

For the immediate moments, though, the emphasis was on happiness and fun. Everyone noticed that, throughout the evening, Alera and Mark ware together, holding hands and frequently lost in each other's eyes.

Somehow Aughra managed to find places where all of them could sleep and they went to bed at last, the Gelfling within the observatory, Mark in the single large room he had used before. He was glad to be able to stretch out. Shortly after Mark settled in there was a knock on the door and Alera entered. She walked to his pallet and lay down next to him, the two of them cuddling until both finally fell asleep.

In the morning Jora said that he would take the Gelfling down to the old ruins to see if they could be restored so that the Gelfling could live there. Aughra had already discussed with Jora the problem that they faced, and he was going to talk to the other Gelfling as they explored the ruins, trying to come up with some kind of idea on what they could possibly do to combat this alien evil.

A short time after they left Mark turned to Aughra. "It's time to start my lessons in earnest," he said to hear. "I need to learn about this talisman, about how it links me to Thra. Maybe there is some way I can use Thra's own energies to combat that thing from Earth.

Aughra told Mark that she had searched the observatory and had uncovered some very old parchments that helped explain the talisman. It was a device to focus energy, working on both the physical and the spiritual planes. It could also be used only in defense, never in an aggressive mode.

Throughout the day Mark poured over the parchments with Aughra, Alera always by his side. He learned that Alera was a healer, one of two in he tribe. There was no doubt that the bond between the two was growing stronger all the time, although Mark was still reluctant to give in totally to its pull, sure that something was bound to happen, that he would make some mistake that would drive Alera and the others away.

In one of their short breaks Aughra asked him about his reluctance. "Aughra, " Mark began. "I admit that I love with Alera. I had begin to think that I had somehow destroyed that emotion in me, that I would never been able to love anyone again, but I was wrong."

He paused for a moment and then continued. "I love Alera. I'd like to spend my life with her, but I don't see how that is possible. She's a Gelfling, and I'm a human. For all I know I may not even that much longer to live, once I confront this thing that came with me from Earth. And that's even assuming I am worth loving, which I have some major doubts about."

Aughra looked at him, hrumphed to herself, picked up a wooden rod from the table and proceeded to whap him on top of his head. Hard.

"You sound stupid," she began. "All beings worth loving. All beings can love. This not just about you," she continued. "What about Alera's feelings?"

"I don't want to see her hurt," Mark replied. "I've always messed up whenever I've allowed by emotions to be in control. Alera deserves better than a misfit such as me."

He did not realize that Alera was standing nearby, just outside the door. She had heard everything he had said. She ran into the room and grabbed him, holding him tightly.

"You do deserve love," Alera began. "We're different on the outside," she added, "but inside, in here (she said, indicating her heart), we're the same. I love you and you love me. That is all that either of us needs to know."

She looked into his eyes. "Besides," she continued. "I won't let you face danger alone."

Mark hugged her and together they returned to his studies. It was far into the night before they were able to take the time to sleep.

In the middle of the night, a pod village was attacked and destroyed by the energy cloud.

There were only three survivors.

Chapter Eight

Aughra entered the room where Mark and Alera were sleeping, snuggled tightly against each other. She bent down and began to shake both of them.

"Wake up," she yelled. "Much wrong."

Mark forced his eyes open. "What's happened?" he asked. By this time Alera was beginning to wake and she held on to Mark as Aughra told them of the events of the previous night.

"Podlings come this morning," Aughra began. "Tell Aughra that creature attacked their village last night. No more village. Almost no more podlings."

Mark was fully awake. "Was it Ydra's village?" he asked.

"No," Aughra answered. "Another village, not far from Ydra's."

Mark thought for a moment. "Go to the Gelfling," he began. "Get the to gather up the podlings and go to the valley of the urRu. I think the stones there might be able to provide some protection, at least for a while. I'll go to the castle and consult the Great Crystal. I have a feeling the cloud creature is going to be coming after me and I want to meet it in the castle. I think the best chance I have of defeating it is there.

He finished dressing. "I'll leave right now," he said. "If I'm able to defeat the creature I'll come to the valley and meet you there. If I don't show up sometime in the next three days then you'll have to try some other approach."

Alera looked up at Mark and took his hand. "I'm going to the castle with you," she said.

"Alera, you can't go with me," he said. "I won't put you in that kind of danger. I love you more than anything else and I can't stand the thought of anything happening to you. I'm the one that brought the evil here and I'm the one that's going to have to destroy it."

He hugged Alera tightly to him once, then ran from the room, heading for the path that would lead him down the hill and on towards the Great Castle. He ran as quickly as he could, driven by fear of what the creature might do to Alera and the others if it wasn't stopped.

Dark clouds were moving through the sky as he finally saw the castle standing pure white against the growing darkness. He was breathing heavily by the time he entered the castle. Still, he forced himself on, going to the chamber of the Great Crystal. He looked at the crystal and tried to place himself in a state of deep meditation, hoping to contact the Crystal in the same way that Aughra had earlier.

He sang the chants that Aughra had taught him, repeated the phrases she had told him to use and opened himself as much as he could to the vibrations of the Great Crystal. Finally the air around him seemed to fade to white as he felt his being merging with that of the Great Crystal.

"Show me where the being of evil is," he said.

An image formed, wavered and then cleared. He saw the energy cloud moving swiftly towards the castle.

At least I've gotten its attention," he said to himself. He could see that, as the cloud moved, it burned the ground, destroying any life it found there. The cloud flashed with burst after burst of internal lightening, giving it an angry appearance as it moved ever closer.

Mark looked at the markings on the floor and sensed the one from which he would draw the most power. He moved to the marking and turned his back to the Great Crystal. As he stood he could hear the sounds of the storm outside, the thunder starting to reverberate throughout the castle. Soon, those sounds were joined with another, a low, dark sound coming from the cloud creature as it entered the castle.

The stench from the creature flowed like a thick miasma into the room as Mark removed his shirt, baring the mark of the talisman. The Great Crystal began to emit a sharp tone that slowly built in volume as the creature approached through the castle corridors.

Soon the blackness of the energy cloud could be seen in the entrance to the chamber room. Light from the Great Crystal then began to pour into Mark from behind him, filling his body. The central pit below the Crystal began to radiate its power, focusing the might of the planet itself through the Crystal and on into Mark.

"And so it begins," Mark said quietly as the power from the Crystal increased. The talisman on his chest began to glow brightly, and suddenly a beam of pure white energy blazed forth from it, smashing into the cloud creature and slowing its advance.

Sweat poured from Mark as he stood, a focus and a user of the energy in his desperate defense of Thra. The light blazed from the talisman again and the creature wavered but still continued its advance. Mark realized that he was losing, yet he fought to open himself even more to his adopted planet and its energies. No sounds came from the cloud as it struggled against the energy being directed against it, nor did any sounds come from Mark as he struggled to control and focus the energy.

Mark fell to one knee and then rose again as the fight began to take its toll of his body. The creature advanced at every sign of weakness on his part.

Suddenly Mark could hear the sound of soft footsteps coming closer. He glanced quickly to his right and saw Alera smiling at him. She looked into his eyes. "I love you," she said, then came closer and took his hand in hers and turned to face the evil cloud.

Mark looked at her for a moment, all resistance to the forging of their bond now gone from him. "Together, then," he said, once again turning to face the intruder.

Slowly light began to spread from the talisman over Mark's chest, down his body and across the bridge of hands to Alera. The light soon covered both their bodies as they held hands tightly. The cloud hesitated in its advance, acting as if it was unsure of what was now happening.

Aughra watched from a hidden corner in the galleries far above he chamber. Alera had refused to go with the other Gelfling, and she and Aughra had ridden landstriders with Aughra complaining all the way about the roughness of the ride. They had arrived at the castle shortly after Mark and had watched as he first confronted the creature.

She watched as Mark and Alera became totally bathed in the energy from the Great Crystal. Light poured from Mark's talisman, a fire stronger than before, fueled by his love for Alera and Thra.

Aughra had to shield her face as the light blazed brighter than anything she had ever seen before. Suddenly a terrifying, grating scream rang throughout the castle.

Moments later the light dimmed. The Great Crystal returned to its normal level of intensity. As for the cloud creature, there was not a single trace. Aughra saw the light dim around Alera's body as she fell, unconscious, to the floor.Where Mark had stood there was now only a shimmering pool of light on the floor, quickly becoming smaller and soon vanishing entirely.

Chapter Nine

Moments after the creature had disappeared more footfalls echoed through the castle as the other Gelfling all arrived, along with the podlings. Carrying whatever types of weapons they could they had all come to join the battle to defend their planet.

They separated into small groups, searching for Mark and finally finding him in one of the restored bed chambers.

Mark's eyes opened slowly as consciousness returned. At first all he could see was a soft light surrounding him, then the light dimmed. As his vision cleared he could see that he was lying on a bed, surrounded by Gelfling and podlings, with Alera holding on to him, tears streaming down he face.

He tried to move but was too weak to rise. "Alera," he called softly. "What happened?" He looked around him, a puzzled expression on his face as he spoke. "Everything looks different, somehow.""It should," Alera answered, laughter now mixing with her tears. "You've changed."

Mark looked down at his body and realized that he had become smaller. He felt the sides of his head and realized that even the shape of his ears had changed. His dream had been answered, for he was no longer an human in body or mind; he was now fully a Gelfling, heart, soul and body.

"How?" he asked.

"Great Crystal did it," Aughra said as Mark turned his head towards her. "It change body. You now Gelfling, always be Gelfling."

Mark stood up, leaning against Alera. "The evil; is it gone?" he asked.

"Evil gone," Aughra replied. Soon the rest of the Gelfling and the podlings crowded into the bedchamber. Jora watched as Alera and Mark continued to hold tightly to each other.

"There is always room for one more Gelfling in our tribe," he said, smiling. Mark turned towards Alera and soon the two were kissing, the sounds of laughter and joy once again ringing through the castle.

Love's Bright Power

This is a fanzine that I published which has the second Dark Crystal story I did, using characters from the first story. I also have used elements of the history of Thra which I made up, trying to figure out some things, among them how Gelfling could possibly have survived somewhere else on the planet. If only Jen and Kira had survived, then, unless their biology is radically different from humans, they would need more than just two people to build up a viable gene pool. It is possible, of course, for something magical to be involved, but the same did not establish anything that would indicate any kind of actual magic on Thra.

I do know, of course, that this is a 'Mary Sue' type of publication and isn't really of professional quality, but I really liked the film and wanted to do take a look at what might have happened after the ending of the film.

This version of the story has been altered from its original appearance in a fanzine I did some years ago.

Chapter One: The Wizard

The wizard and his prisoner stood on the rare patch of dry ground and surveyed their surroundings. In all directions lay a thick, nearly impenetrable swamp, myriads of strange plants competing for every inch of growing space they could find. Small pools of sickly colored water gave off a stench that assailed the nostrils of the wizard and his female captive.

A bloated red sun hung low in the sky, lending an eerie cast to the already evil-appearing landscape. Multitudes of small insects sang, jumped and flew through the air, alighting on the two humanoid invaders of their homeland, then quickly jumping off to pursue their interests elsewhere.

'We are close. I can feel it,' said the wizard, almost in a whisper. The girl, long ago placed under his hypnotic poewr, failed to respond. her long blond hair hung down loosely on her shoulder, her milky-white skin showing no signs of imperfections anywhere. She was to be the sacrifice, and she had to be as near perfect in physical appearance as was possible.

The wizard's name was Bal-maron, from the planet Allengore, a planet of highly advanced wizards who had spent eons studying the mystic arts. Bal-maron was taller than most of the otehr wizards with long, dark hair and a set of small, beady eyes that always seemed to watch everything that was happening everywhere around him. He was known as an independent wizard, a trait which had gotten him into trouble on many occasions with the ruling Council. His current trip to this swampy planet had, in fact, been banned by the Council, but Bal-maron had shown his usual defiance and managed to slip away from their observations.

For his part Bal-maron considered the other wizards foolish old dodderers who didn't have the sense to use their talents to their own benefit. He firmly believed that the others were jealous of his talents, which were admittedly considerable, and that they would eventually try to arrest him and submit him to some form of selective mindwipe just to stop him from reaching his full potential.

His voice, when he spoke, was dark and malignant, his breath smelling of foul foods that he had eaten and had unsuccessfully attempted to digest. Usually he made some form of hissing or grunting sounds, using regular speech rarely, preferring to intimidate others by his mere physical presence.

'The temple is this way,' the wizard said to the girl and then began to pull on her arm, forcing her to follow him through the much of the swamp. the wizard looked momentarily at the girl and laughed to himself.

'You have the body of a goddess, woman. The dark gods will be most pleased.' They made their way stumbling through the deep grass and the ever-present pools of foul water. A short time later they stopped once again.

'The old legends were right,' the wizard said, his voice full of awe. 'It was worth killing those foolish monks to steal the Terbuk manuscript from their library. The Temple of Darkness is exactly where the writings said it would be.'

He looked at the exterior of the temple carefully. It was made of an incredibly ancient stone, the stones fit together so perfectly that even the finest sheet of paper could not fit between them. They were blackened with age, covered with the mold and mildew of the swamp.

Lengthy vines trailed their forms from the rooftop far above. Two pillars defined the main entrance to the temple, each pillar being cared with obscene symbols of the darkest of magics.

The wizard stood looking at the entrance which showed nothing but a total blackness beyond the doorway, a blackness that seemed to draw in any surrounding light and prevented it's escape. He saw one of the common feline animals of the swamp nearby. Casting a spell he quickly placed the animal under his control and directed it to walk through the open doorway. It moved totally under his command and, within moments, began to walk through the open passage.

Suddenly there was a burst of blackness flooding out from the interior of the temple. It engulfed the animal and seconds later the blackness moved away, leaving behind a pile of bones and a bleached-white skull.

'So their powers are very strong,' the wizard hissed to himself. 'Good. I mean to have that power for myself.' He looked at the girl and added, 'and that will be soon.'

He moved slowly nearer the door and stopped only a few feet away from the entrance. From within his cloak he pulled out a dark gemstone and held it in front of him.

'Hear me, oh gods of darkness,' he said, his voice booming through the fetid swamp. ”I have the gem of darkess once owned by Shothar-alberal himself. You must allow me and my gift to you to pass unharmed through your gateway. Heed, and do my bidding.'

The wizard was sweating, not entirely from the effects of the heat. Th egirl stood by his side, her mind registering nothing of the vents that were happening around her, aware only of the orders from her captor.

Suddenly the doorway seemed to be filled with two glowing malevolent red eyes, eyes that blinked once, then twice at the wizard. A harsh, croaking, horrible voice spoke from within the bowels of the temple.

'Enter, wizard, if you dare.' The air was suddenly filledwith a hiedous cackling as of some form of vilely obscene laughter.

The wizard took a deep breath and began to move forward, still holding the gemstone in front of him. 'Come, girl,' he commanded. 'Your destiny awaits within.'

Chapter 2: Rebirth of a Planet

'It was a dark time for our peoples, the gentle voice began. The speaker was Taren, Keeper of Histories. She was an elderly Gelfling, her long hair nearly all white, hanging loose over her faded cloak. She spoke to a small group of Gelfling young, children born since the healing of the crystal, and before that time. The Gelfling lacked formal schools, but parental instruction and visits to the Keeper of Histories told they all they needed to learn about Gelfling life and customs.

'Seven circles of seven wise ones,' Taren continued, 'lit the fires of prophecy and lay on the Hills of Decision all night. the Goddess answered their prayers and her energy flowed through them. The Wall of Destiny appeared here in our capital of Tarakendal, complete with the inscriptions and drawings you see before you.'

The children made small sounds of awe as they gazed at the wall, before which the keeper was standing.

'The Goddess showed them the healing of the crystal by Gelfling hand,' she continued, her face showing a small frown, but She also showed them other possibilities, for there were many future histories. In some of them the Great Crystal was healed, but in most of the histories the the Crystal reamined damaged and the Skeksis grew ever greater in power.'

The children shrank back from the wall, clinging to the skirts their mothers wore. One child, a beautiful blonde-headed girl, clung to the skirt belonging to one of the Gelfling who helped heal the Crystal, Kira. Karela, the child, had been born to Jen and Kira a few years after the healing of the Crystal, and she was not yet seven, just barely old enough to listen to the speeches of the Keeper.

Kira smiled down at her and hugged her head closer. Nearby stood Alera, physically quite similar to Kira in appearance, and she was also gently touching the head of a blonde Gelfling, her daughter, Almera. Both children hugged their mothers and returned their gazes to Taren.

'In our reality,' Taren continued, 'the Great Crystal was heralded and our world with it. the strange beats and plants that had arisen from the cracked Crystal disappeared and everything returned to normal. The ability to fly was restored to female Gelfling and the great rebirth of our culture began.'

Taren smiled at the children and gently touched the hair of one of the closer male children.

'The first thing we had to face,' Taren began, 'was the second threat to our peoples, a hideous creature that came her from another planet. A brave Gelfling, Mark son-of-Elizabeth, faced this evil with his bondmate Alera and together they sent it back to the darkness from which it came.'

With this the children looked at Alera, wonder on their faces. She blushed and smiled, then the yall returned their attention to Taren.

'The Skeksis had thought they had killed all the Gelfling,' she said, 'but they were wrong. Jen and Kira survived and were joined later by Jora and his tribe. Then, as the years passed, other Gelfling returned to our capital from very far away. Three trine had passed since the healing of the Crystal and our Queen, Serena I, was crowned. Jora became her consort and the rebuilding of Tarakendal began in earnest. The Wall of Destiny was dept as Jen and Kira had found it, preserved as a memorial to all those Gelfling who had died during the Dark Millenium.'

Taren sat down on a chair and asked the children if they had any questions they would like to ask.

'Who was our greatest Queen?' one of the young female Gelfling asked.

'Shalana the Wise,' Taren answered without hesitation. “She was one of our earliest Queens. In her rign our art and music advanced very far. The greatest of all our artists, Shelon, lived during her reign. Yet we have had many other great queens. Ariel I had Tarakendal built so that the gelfing would have a center for our art and music. Shalan V was known as the most beautiful of all our queens. Sharla II organized the greatest Festival of Crafts we have ever seen. there have been many good queens, children.'

After that Taren stood and thanked the children and then left. The mothers took their young back to their homes, Kira taking Karela to visit Jen who was busy working with the podlings gathering food outside the city. Within a short time they ahd arrived and watched as the podlings and Jen quickly picked dyllorkin and various gourds for the gourd must treat the podlings would fix for their dinners.

Alera, meanwhile, had left Almera with a friend of hers and had walked further afield, beyond the harvesting podlings. She found Mark sitting quietly by a stream.

'Bondmate,' Alera called softly. 'What is it you are thinking of?'

Mark smiled at her, the love evident in the way his eyes watched her every move. 'I think of how much I have learned since coming to Thra,' he answered, 'and of how I only became truly alive here. And I think of how much I love you.' He rose and took her hand in his, then pulled her gently towards him.

She pushed against him with her body and broke away, then ran a short distance, laughing as she did so. She stopped and looked at him, a mischievous smile on her face. She began to dance, turning and twisting with great graace. She approached him, brushing her hair against his face, then she danced away. Mark knew that this was the start of the mating ritual and that, as a male Gelfling, he would follow Alera's lead.

Female Gelfling chose the time of their ability to have children. The mating ritual could be used simply for the sexual pleasure and closeness both Gelfling found it it, or for opening the female Gelfling to pregnancy. The Gelfing could have sexual intercourse without the ritual, but the ritual was the height of pleasure, closeness and love for the Gelfling.

The natural body perfume produced by the female Gelfling differed for the two types of dance, and in this case Mark could tell that it was Alera's opening herself to pregnancy that had initiated this particular ritutal.

Alera removed her clothing and her wings unfolded behind her. They began to flutter as she rose, flying near to him adn then away, enticing him with her presence and her bodily perfumes.

Mark removed his clothing and a few moments later Alera landed near him. She touched him softly on his should and he sank to his back on the ground. She quickly mounted him and then began the most intense part of the ritual.

Chapter Three: The Deal

The wizard and his prisoner entered the temple slowly. As they encountered the darkness they could feel it on their skins, pressing in upon them, threatening to smother them with its foulness.

At first they walked in absolute darkness, but gradually that began to give way to a sickly yellow illumination, then changed to a reddish--tinged light.

Everywhere they looked they saw evidenec of the temple's dedication to evil. Rotting pieces of unrecognizable meat, bits of skeletons and pieces of fabric seemed to litter the entire surface of the floor they walked upon.

Hideous iconographic portraits hung on the walls, the bodies shown in the portraits twisted and distorted, blasphemous mockeries of the humanoid form. Each figure was shown devouring some other form of creature, or spreading death and disease everywhere they went.

After what seemed like an eternity they found the main chamber of the temple. The light inside seemed slightly brighter than that in the corridors. In the center of the room was a circular pit with a smaller circular area in the middle, a flame rising from that circle lending its reddish luminescence to the room. The walls of the chamber were unadorned except for a few torches and what appeared to be a layer of dried blood.

Twenty feet from the larger circular pit stood a series of four statues arranged at the ardinal points of the planet. The statues were representations of the dark gods of the temple and were so horrible in appearance that even Bal-maron turned away in disgust.

Finally he caught himself, turned slowly and spoke to the flame in the center of the pit.

'I have come, oh great gods of darkness, to offer you this choice sacrifice.' With that he moved to the hypnotized girl so that she stood next to him. He then stripped away her clothing. The red light reflected wildly off the curves of her naked body.

'The girl is young and a virgin,' the wizard continued, 'for you to do with as you please.'

Silence followed, and then a nauseating sulfurous stench drifted through the room. Suddenly a harsh, cracked deep voice rumbled from the center of the flame.

'We do with all as we please, wizard,' the voice spoke.

The wizard cringed slightly but then began to move the gemstone in a circular pattern, all the while muttering arcane words, completing a spell of summoning that he had mentally begun as soon as he had entered the foul room.

'I have come to serve you,' the wizard began. 'This sacrifice is proof of my sincerity. I wish to become your high priest, to spread your power through the stars.'

'You come to serve yourself,' the voice said angrily. 'We can read your puny mind and know your deepest thoughts and fears. You seek power and petty revenge. We know your kind well.'

'Very well,' the wizard relied coldly, his own anger rising. 'If you are not interested in the sacrifice I offer or the chance to spread your influence once again through the universe then I will leave you and go elsewhere.'

'You will stay,' thundered the voice. 'The sacrifice is pleasing to us in appearance and should prove nourishing. We shall feed and then discuss your future.'

With that, an amorphous shape rose from the flame, a cloud of light mixed with darkness, floating slowly towards the captive girl. The wizard moved away as the cloud slowly descened on her. She screamed once and then fell.

Bal-maron watched the cloud as it covered the girl, remained there for a few moments more and then rose, brighter and darker than before , and then returned to the flame.

Where the girl had laid there was now only dust.

'We propose a deal,' a new voice said. 'We will give you the power you seek. In return you will agree to travel throughout the worlds, finding us choice victims and returning them here through a spell of transportation. You will do all in your power to influence others to begin worshiping us as was done in the days of old.'

The wizard smiled slightly to himself, and then spoke. 'What happened to all those who worshiped you once?'

'Most of those,' the reply began, 'were put to death eons agao in a vast war against our followers. The few who survived have been too weak to add to our power. The more worshipers we have, the more our power grows.'

'Is that all you would have me do?' the wizard asked.

'There is one task more,' the voice replied. 'There is a Great Crystal. It occurs in many dimensions at once, even in our own. It was broken and dark for a thousand years but recently it has been healed. We must have that Crystal returned to its darkened state, for only that way can it help serve our cause.'

'We can regain our rightful place in the universe through one such as you, wizard,' a third voice spoke.

'I will not fail you,' the wizard replied.

'Then prepare yourself,' the original voice intoned. The wizard's body suddenly stiffened as the flame grew higher. The room was filled with a greenish mist that spread out from the center pit and coalesced around his body. The mist danced and darted around him, covering him completely.

A few moments later the mist cleared and the wizard's eyes blinked as he once again became aware of his surroundings. He could now feel new power coursing through his veins, new knowledge implanted into his mind, new spells at his command. He turned and walked briskly from the temple, never once looking back.

He spent years practicing his new skills, honing his talents to a razor's edge. When he felt he was ready he returned to Allengore to carry out his revenge against those he felt had mocked him or had been jealous of his talents, but he found only ruins everywhere, only rock and dust forming the barren landscape.

He cared not how they had died on his planet; his triumph over his enemies was complete. He need not waste any more time. He would make the Great Crystal useful once again to his masters.

Chapter Four: The Wizards of Allengore

Something tugged at the corner of Mark's mind, forcing him to become awake. He was cuddled closely with Alera who was still sleeping from the effects of their lovemaking. Mark blinked his eyes a few times and looked around. A few feet away stood an old woman, humanoid in appearance, clothing in a long, flowing white robe. He stood up and carefully approached the woman.

'Greetings, Mark of the Gelfling,' said the old woman, raising one hand in some form of greeting.

'Who are you?' Mark asked, puzzled by the old woman's appearance. She did not resemble anyone he knew either from Thra or from Earth. (Remember; Mark was originally a human.)

'I am Tal-sheena, of Allengore,' she replied. 'That is, I am a projection of her reality. I have been sent ot warn you of a great danger to Thra.'

'What danger?' Mark asked. No matter how closely he looked at the woman, her entire body seemed to constantly shimmer, as would a mirage on the desert.

'I and others of my kind come from the world of Allengore,' the woman continued. 'We lived on a planet in a universe where magic, rather than science, ruled. We became the most advanced wizards in that universe, and we used all our powers for the benefit of others. But our single greatest accomplishment is here on Thra. We created you Great Crystal.'

'Why did you create it here, rather than on your own world?” Mark asked.

'We found that your universe was also based on magic, and that Thra was even more magical than our world of Allengore,' she replied. 'The spells we used created a Crystal so powerful that shadow copies of the Great Crystal appeared in many other dimensions. The copies themselves are quite strong, but still do not approach the power of the one true Crystal.'

'Then where were you when the urSkeks came and entered the Crystal? Why didn't you stop the Crystal from being used by the Skeksis to kill Gelfling and pervert this planet to their own foul ends?'

The old woman bowed her head for a moment and then replied, her voice now showing deep sadness. 'We had left Thra many millenia ago'; she began. We wanted to leave the planet to develop naturally. Although we will help anyone who asks for our aid, we do not believe in trying to control people or things. So, we had kept watch on many worlds, including your Thra.'

'Then we began to face difficulties on our own world. One of our own number turned to the powers of darkness and began using his magical abilities to spread evil. He was one of the greatest of our wizards and we searched long and hard, many of our members trying desperately to find the warped one, only to find him and pay for that with their lives. Then our planet became the focus of a war.'

'Bal-maron, the evil one, aligned himself with other wizards who had chosen to follow evil and do his bidding. He also swayed various other planets to align themselves with him, and the wizards attacked using their magic, and their supporters, aliens from a variety of worlds, attacked using their science.'

'It was a long and terrible war. Our planet lay in ruins, most of our kind dead. Still, we took a great toll of the enemy and those that were left withdrew. We knew it would be only a matter of time before Bal-maron formed another army, so we chose to flee Allengore and have been in hiding since.'

'Somehow, some of the energy from that battle leaked through the barrier separating our universes and made its way to your planet. It is that energy which is responsible for your being transported to Thra, and for becoming a Gelfling. '

Mark stood and thought for a moment. 'I see. On Earth, Thra was a place that was totally fictional. I really loved the story and the movie, and apparently the energy somehow sensed that and brought me here.'

'What is fantasy in your own world is, at times, reality in this or other universes,” Tal-sheena spoke. 'Sensitive people in your world of Earth may pick up the psychic energies from places such as Thra and then, in their dreams, sometimes come to actually see an alternate reality which they later write about as fiction, not realizing that their pretend worlds are actually real.'

'Why didn't you heal the Crystal?” Marked asked.

'By then,' Tal-sheena replied, the few of us that remained had found shelter and we were not in any shape to use magic. Our recovery has taken a long time and been very difficult. If my powers were at full strength, I would be standing before you in my physical body rather than in a psychic projection of my body. We were overjoyed when Jen and Kira were able to heal the Crystal and restore peace to Thra.'

Tal-sheena looked around a few moments, and then turned her attention back to Mark. “Bal-maron is coming to Thra to find a way to pervert the Great Crystal to his own uses. He will net nothing stop him in his drive for ever greater power.'

'You may be the one thing that can stand against him. You are unique, like nothing he has ever experienced. You have memories of your life on Earth, and yet you are also a true Gelfling. You have the Talisman of Power, and your body is linked tightly to Thra itself, that done at the moment the Great Crystal changed you. You must find a way to stop him. If you fail, he could gain control of the Great Crystal and cause untold suffering to Thra and countless other planets.'

Mark heard a soft sound behind him and saw that Alera was beginning to awaken.

'I will do all that I can,” he said.

'Let us pray it will be enough,' Tal-sheena replied. 'There are still powers within you that you have not yet tapped,' she added hastily. 'You need to go once again to the Crystal Castle and attune yourself to the Great Crystal. Become aware of all your powers. You will need all the strength that you can find.' She looked at Alera who was not stretching and spoke quickly. 'I must go. May the Goddess protect you,' she finished, and then faded away like a dream.

Mark walked over to Alera and, as she stood, he hugged her tightly.

Chapter 5: The Evil Enters

Bal-maron appeared in the midst of a rocky valley. Tall walls of stone surrounded him on two sides, the walls narrowing in the distance, forming two small entrances to the valley. The dark wizard looked around, a grim determination evident on his face. Slowly his hands rose in teh air while a steady stream of arcane words poured form his lips.

Light flashed at the tip of his fingers, then darted out to a place near the valley. Quickly it elongated and grew nearly to the very top of the valley. After a short time it dimmed, and where there had been nothing but plants and small rocks, there now stood a castle formed of black stones. A deep moat surrounded the structure while a single drawbridge slowly lowered to admit the renegade wizard.

The castle was nearly as dark inside as out, with few lights lending illumination the interior. He made his way swiftly to his study and, once there, consulted his scrying mirror.

In the middle appeared an image of the Great Crystal within the Crystal Castle

.

'It is the one,' Bal-maron hissed, his voice full of menace. 'After all these years I have finally built enough power to take on the Great Crystal itself. I can use its power to crush those who call themselves 'dark gods.' I, and I alone, will take their place and run the universe as I see fit.'

He spoke some more arcane terms and the image in the mirror shifted, this time showing the other wizards of Allengore, still trapped within the dimension they had fled to. 'Good,' he said. 'Those useless old fools are still caught in their own web. I'll face no challenge from them.'

The image flickered again. The castle was shown for the second time, but in this case it had a pulsing white light surrounding the entire castle. 'A force field,' Bal-maron said, almost spitting the words out. 'I should have known the Crystal would have its own defenses active now that it has been healed. Still, given time I will be able to get past that barrier and get the power of the Great Crystal for myself.'

Another spell and still more images appeared in the mirror, this time of the Podlings and the Gelfling.

'Primitives,' Bal-maron said. “It will be easy enough to control them. Perhaps they will provide me with some amusement after I've used the power of the Great Crystal to take my rightful place as the ruler pf the entire cosmos.

Another spell and Aughra's observatory became visible, Aughra busily working on her calculations.

The wizard studied the image of the old woman, then snorted in contempt. 'She dabbles in things yet thinks she knows much,' he began. 'Still, perhaps she may still prove of some use to me. If not, I can eliminate her with no problems.'

After another series of words the image in the mirror shifted to show Mark and Alera in Tarakendal. The wizard cast another spell and the air around Mark seemed to shimmer with much the same colors as did the air around the Crystal Castle itself. Mark's talisman shown as a bright beacon on his chest.

'There could be danger from that one,' Bal-maron said. “He might prove difficult. His body contains power and is linked to yet greater power.' He stood and thought for a moment, and then continued. “I see that he is tied in to that female being. Perhaps through her I can come to control him. If not, I will simply destroy them both.'

The wizard turned away from the mirror and walked to a bronze tripod placed in the center of the room. He reached into a pocket of his robe and took out some fine crystalline powder, then threw it onto the tripod. Instantly the power burst into flame, the flame showing a sickly reddish color. Another spell came from his lips, and then there was silence.

After a few minutes odd sounds began to drift through the corridors, and a short time later various animals filed into the room, each with eyes that were staring, the minds behind those eyes caught in the hypnotism of the wizard's spell. They stood in a semicircle on the other side of the tripod as Bal-maron smiled. He waited a moment and then threw a purplish powder into the tripod's flame.

There was a flash of light and, when it dimmed, Bal-maron could see that his spell had worked. The animals had mutated into hideous distortions of their natural selves, all with large wings and slavering jaws.

He moved one hand and behind him the images of Aughra, Podlings, Gelfling and Alera all appeared in the mirror.

'Go fourth, servants of darkness,' Bal-maron intoned, his voice deep and rich, echoing through the castle's corridors. 'Seize these beings you see before you and bring them her to me. Go now, and do my bidding.'

With that the room was filled with the rustling of wings as the mutated beings rose and flew off through the corridor's to the castle's exit. Not a single sound came form their lips as they flew off to fulfill their master's orders.

Bal-maron smiled, then left the chamber to prepare for his coming visitors.

Chapter 6: The Ultimatum

Mark entered the throne room of the Queen's castle in Tarakendel. The room was the largest in the city, the walls covered with beautiful tapestries depicting scenes of domestic life andd agricultural activities. The floor of the room was covered with a thin layer of topsoil so that the Gelfling nobility could always remember their close ties to the planet itself.

The Queen, Serene I, sat on a throne carved from a single piece of jade-like stone. Her hair was longer than any other Gelfling in the city and hung in golden tresses over her shoulders and down across the front of her grass-green robes.

To her left stood See-er, the elderly prophet of the tribe of Jora. See-er had been a prophet his entire life, and it was his warning of impending doom that encouraged a tribe of Gelfling to leave the settled areas and seek shelter elsewhere. The shelter they eventually found was deep within chambers carved out of a mountain, chambers carved by no race known to the Gelfling. The female leader of the tribe was killed in an accident, and the remaining members of the tribe then consulted amongst themselves and, led by a vision from See-er, they broke with tradition and chose Serena as the leader, and it became she and See-er who led the tribe back from the mountain when the Crystal was healed.

Jora was her consort, a strong, handsome Gelfling, who had helped her rebuild the city and led the Gelfling back to the type of life that they had remembered.

Mark was on bended knee in front of the throne, his head bowed in humbleness before his Queen.

'Rise, young one,' the Queen said, her voice strong and with a hint of playfulness about it. 'What brings you to this court?'

Mark stood up, facing the Queen, his hands held tightly in front of him.

'I have been given a warning,' Mark said, his voice somewhat shaky. All Gelfling held their Queen in awe, the Queen being the supreme matriarchal figure of their entire society. All Queens had about them an aura of power and love, and all Gelfling honored and respected their Queens and would willingly die for them if the necessity arose.

The Gelfling believed that the Queen ruled by the will of the Goddess. A Queen's daughters could choose to become Queen in their own time, or to pass the position of Queen on to someone else.

If that option was chosen, a Gathering of the Tribes was held during which the various leaders of the Gelfling tribes would assemble in Tarakendal and, in a great ceremony of power, hold hands and link themselves physically to the planet and to the Goddess. As image of the female that was to become Queen would appear to all of them, and then the new Queen would be crowned at the end of the ceremony.

The Queens seemed to possess some genetic or physical traits that endowed them with great abilities of leadership. There was no formal bureaucracy as such in Gelfing society, no forms of political parties or vested interest groups, no lobbyists trying to curry favor for their overlords.

All Gelfling were telepathically linked to each other in various degrees, and to the planet itself. The Queen would make any decisions that needed to be made in settling new areas, planting new crops or any other things that might arise in a primarily agricultural society. She was also the judge at all Festivals of Crafts which the Gelfling loved to hold, during which their greatest musicians and artists would compete.

The Queen was also the chief healer of all Gelfling, her powers being far above those of a regular tribal healer such as Alera. Once Mark had been brought to the Queen, suffering nightmares from memories he still had of Earth. The Queen had healed him of the terrors and he had never had a nightmare since.

Mark and Alera were quite close to the Queen, and the Queen had helped Alera to develop her own healing powers. The Queen had also taken a motherly interest in Mark, sensing the deep loneliness and sorrow he had experienced as a human and helped him adjust to his new life as a Gelfling.

The Queen's eyes looked deeply into Mark's. 'What form of warning?” she asked.

'A wizard has appeared to me,' he began. 'She was from another planet. She said one of her kind had turned to the ways of evil and had come here to Thra to take the Great Crystal for his own.'

'This is not the first I have heard of this danger,' the Queen replied. 'See-er has told me of a vision he had of great danger and much suffering.' The Queen looked at See-er, then Jora, then turned her attention to Mark.

'We will make what preparations we can,' the Queen said. 'You are to go to Aughra's and make further study of the talisman you bear. I have talked to Aughra and she says you have made much progress in understanding the talisman given you by the urRu. Perhaps that will prove of great help to us. Meanwhile I will order all other Gelfling tribes warned.'

'I will go at once, my Queen,' Mark replied, bowing. Then he turned and left the chamber to begin his journey to Aughra's.

Aughra's observatory lay northeast of the city, and it was several hours later before Mark arrived on Aughra's hill.

He stared up at the observatory and then began the climb along a rough path that play up the mountainside. It was some time later before he finally stood outside the observatory's entrance.

'Aughra,' he called. 'It's Mark.' He waited, but there was no reply from inside. He approached the doors and touched them gently. They opened and revealed the shambled interior of the observatory. Tables were overturned, beakers broken, and there was a great hole in the observatory dome on the far side of the room. Of Aughra there was no sign.

He entered, trying to determine what had happened. Suddenly a horrid flapping sound came from above and Mark looked up. He saw a vile, twisted creature perched on the dome. It stared down at him with red eyes, then began to croak out its message.

'The one you seek has been taken by my master,' it began. 'We have taken others of your kind, and your bondmate.'

'What have you done with Alera?' Mark spoke, the anger in his voice growing by the second.

'She will not be harmed if you cooperate with us,' the creature said. Suddenly it tossed down a piece of paper. As the Gelfling stooped to pick it up the creature continued.

'Here are the directions to my master's castle,' it began. 'You have three days to come there of your own free will and do my master's bidding. If you fail to come he will kill all those he now holds and will then bring death to others elsewhere on this planet.

With that the creature rose and flew off, leaving behind the ruins of Aughra's observatory and the unwavering gaze of a silent Gelfling.

Chapter 7: The Spirit of Thra

Mark knew he must return to Tarakendal and warn the other Gelfling about what had happened. Then he would set out to the wizard's stronghold. Mark took one last look around the shattered room and then stepped out the doors. Instantly his body was bathed in a soft mist and he disappeared.

Moments later he reappeared in the Crystal Chamber, facing the great crystal. Mark blinked his eyes and shook his head, clearing it of the dizziness that remained form his unexpected journey to the castle.

As he looked at the Great Crystal he saw a mist form within, and then a face appeared in that mist, the face of a beautiful woman. She began to speak in a warm, soft, spring-like voice that echoed gently from the walls of the chamber.

'I am Thra,' the voice began, the eyes of the woman looking directly into Mark's. 'I am the spirit of the planet and of all those who have lived here throughout the ages. When the Great Crystal was shattered my spirit was trapped, but with the healing of the Crystal I was again free. I have seen what has happened, Gelfling, and I have brought you here to tell you that I will help you in your battle against the evil one.'

Mark told he he was determined to stop the wizard, and of freezing all the Gelfling he had taken, including Alera.

'The wizard intends to use those you love against you, if he can,' the spirit of the planet spoke. 'If he should somehow gain control of the crystal then he may learn how to use it for his evil purposes. The wizards thoughts are set on greed, hate and destruction. I will be with you, little one. You must be brave. Now I will send you to Tarakendal where you can warn the others.'

'But how will I find you?' Mark asked. 'And what should I do to stop the wizard?'

The face within the crystal smiled and then a mist formed around Mark's body. Moments later the mist cleared and Mark stood outside the entrance to the Queen's throne room.

Mark could see out in the street that there was much hurrying to and fro. Gelfling were rushing, fear etched deeply upon their faces. Mark turned and then entered the throne room, seeing that the Queen,, Jora and See-er had already assembled.

Mark walked quickly to the foot of the throne and knealt. 'I have returned, my Queen,' he said, 'bearing foul news.'

'And we all have to greet you with is equally foul tidings,' she replied. 'Tell us of your news first.'

'Aughra and my bondmate have been taken captive along with others,' Mark began. 'A winged demon told me that I must cooperate with an evil wizard who has come to Thra and that, if I don't, they will all be killed.'

'The demons have appeared within our city,' Serena began. They took several Gelfling captive and flew away with them into the distance. We did not know that your bondmate and Aughra had also been taken. That is foul news indeed.'

Mark then explained about how he saw the image of Thra in the Great Crystal. The queen studied Mark for a few moments. 'I understand,' she began. 'You are tied quite deeply to the spirit of this planet. It was the Great Crystal that changed your human form into that of a Gelfling, and the talismen of the urRu seems to draw upon our planet's energies to channel them through you. This is very good news indeed.'

At that moment Jen and Kira entered the room. 'Forgive us, my Queen,' Kira said, 'but we were outside waiting permission to talk to you and we overheard what was said.' With that Kira walked to Mark and then hugged him tightly against her.

'I'm sorry, Mark,' she said. 'Alera is like a sister to me.' Both Jen and Kira said that they would go with Mark to face the wizard.

'I would send more people with you,' the queen spoke, 'but I sense that this is a danger that you must face with only your closest friends about you. We shall get our people to whatever safety they kind find while you journey to the wizard's lair. May the spirit of Thra be always with you.'

'Thank you, my queen,' Mark replied. 'We shall make our preparations and leave before nightfall.'

Chapter 8: Tools of Horror

Bal-maron had placed Alera and the other Gelfing under strong hypnotic spells. Using his powers he read the deepest fears in their minds. Then he summoned more forest creatures into his chamber and once again lit the bronze tripod. Casting powerful spells he changed the forest creatures into Skeksis and Garthim.

The wizard looked at his creations and smiled. 'So these are the objects of your greatest fear,' he said quietly. 'They will do as the instruments of your destruction quite well.'

He commanded the creatures to leave and guard the castle entrance, then he turned to the hypnotized gelfling. 'I wil creature more of these creatures,' he began. 'Then I shall send them against your people and the Podlings. It should prove most amusing to me to watch them destroy your primitive cultures.'

Bal-maron turned and walked to his scrying mirror. Muttering arcane terms the mirror once again misted, then cleared, revealing an image of Jen, Kira and Mark approaching the castle in the distance.

He called back his creatures and told they to seek out and destroy Jen and Kira, but to bring Mark to him alive. The creatures left the chamber and made their way towards the approaching Gelfling, still in the distance.

Some time later Mark spotted the creatures approaching. He told Jan and Kira to take cover under their landstriders. Meanwhile, he got off his landstriker, removed his shirt and revealed the talisman. As Jen and Kira watched they could see flashes of light moving through the ground to Mark's legs, then up his body and down the arm he was holding towards the Skeksis and Garthim. There was a sudden flash of light, a deep rumbling sound, and a whirling of dust.

When they could open their eyes they saw Mark still standing. Some distance away, the bodies of the Skeksis and Garthim were spread out, their forms torn apart and burned. Mark had sat down on the ground.

'Are you all right?' Kira asked.

'I'll be fine in a little bit,' he replied. 'Using the talisman seems to take a lot out of me, but I should be better soon.'

Back at the castle, Bal-maron was watching the aftermath of the short battle. 'That Gelfling is stronger than I thought,' he said. 'He may prove someone of a challenge to yet.'

At the scene of the attack Mark was talking to Jen and Kira. 'It would be best for you if you went back to Tarakandel,' he began. 'This is probably just the first of the wizard's suprises for us. I can't guarantee I will be able to destroy all the monsters he sends.'

'We're not going back,' Kira said. 'We're going to stay with you.' Jen nodded his head in agreement.

'All right,' Mark said. 'Together then.' The three Glefling mounted their landstriders and set off towards the wizard's stronghold.

It did not take them long to reach the castle and find more Garthim and Skeksis outside, guarding the entrance. They looked carefully but could see no other way to get into the castle and past the monsters

.

'The only way into the castle is to go through them,' Mark said in a determined voice. This time he remained on his his landstrider, and called upon the planet's energy. Again he raised his hand and shot energy out of his fingertips. As the energy intersected with the monsters they began to explode and, before long, all that was left of the castle's defenders was a pile of ash.

Yet again he was weakened. 'You need rest,' Kira said in her soft voice.

'Rest takes time,' Mark replied,' and time is something we have very little of. The wizard can creature more creatures and, sooner or later, they would overrun us by sheer force of numbers. We must move quickly before that can happen.'

The three Gelfling moved cautiously towards the castle's entrance, but no other forms of life appeared to try and stop them. Within a few minutes they were within a large chamber, trying to determine what to do next.

Suddenly walls descended from the ceiling, separating the three Gelfling. Trap doors opened beneath Jan and Kira, droping them into subterranean cells while Mark was left on his own to search the castle's corridors.

Jen felt into a dark and fetid cell. He got slowly to his feet and began to look around. A single torch was lit and in a few minutes he had used that one torch to light several others he found in the same room. As he did he spotted something in a distant corner of the cell.

It was a fungus-like mass of greenish-black material that seem to pulsate, its pulsating increasing as Jen approached. Suddenly the mass split apart, each part quickly growing to the size of the original mass. As it did it split again and grew, then continued to split, each time taking up more and more room in the cell.

The face of the wizard appeared on the cell's wall and looked down at Jen. 'You've met my get, I see,' the wizard's voice began. 'My pet has spurts of growth; from time to time it will reproduce as rapidly as it is doing now.'

The wizard was silent for a moment and then continued. 'I wouldn't advise touching it. The creature thrives on flesh. Sooner or later it will corner you and then flow over your body. Within moments you will be reduced to a mass of oozing tissue which the creature will then absorb into itself.

With that the image of wizard disappeared. Jen took one of the torches and thrust it at one of the creatures but it just drove forward and engulfed the torch, seemingly unhurt. Jen fell back, retreating to a far corner of the cell, waiting and watching as the creatures continued their hideous pulsing.

The moment Kira hit the floor of her cell she was grabbed by a bony hand and thrust into a chair, then quickly secured so she could not escape. As she looked around in panic she saw a Skeksis, a perfect double for Skektek the scientist.

“Now, kefflink,' the scientist said in his raspy voice. 'I shall finish what I started before.'

A dark red crystal on a stand near the far side of the room lit up as the Skeksis threw a level set into the wall. The crystal glowed brighter and then sent a series of beams directly into Kira's eyes. She struggled to escape and cry out.

'It is useless to struggle, little one,' the Skeksis said. 'The beam will soon drain you of all your will. You will become a mindless animal that my master can use for his own pleasures.' The Skeksis chuckled evilly to himself and watched as the beam did its work.

Meanwhile Mark followed corridor after corridor in what seemed to be an endless search for the wizard. Finally, though, he came to a lage circular room. In the center of the room stood Bal-maron dressed in a long, red robe.

'I have been waiting, Gelfling,' he said. “I have an interesting proposal for you. If you help me learn how to control the Great Crystal I shall spare the lives of your friends and I will leave your world untouched.'

'I swear by the Goddess that I shall never aid you in any way, wizard.'

'You swear too quickly, Gelfing,' Bal-maron replied. 'Watch now, and know that these are no illusions.' The wizard made a gesture with his fingers and three mirrors appeared on the wall. In one he could see Jen backed up against a wall as the fungous growth came ever closer. In the second mirror hecould see Kira, her head drooping under the relentless pressure from the beam. In the third, he could see Aughra shackled to a wall while some kind of gas began to fill the room.

Chapter Nine: The Offer

'I offer you great power,' the sorcerer said. 'You shall have dominion over all the Gelfling and Podlings. You shall have a life of pleasure and plenty.' Bal-maron made a slight movement of his hands and a mist rose in the right part of the room. As Mark watched he could see an image appear in the mist, an image of Alera as Queen of all Gelfing and himself as the real power behind the throne. Beautiful Gelfling daughters, his daughters, stood by the throne in regal array.

'All you have to do is cooperate with me,” the wizard said, 'and all this and more shall be yours. Your bondmate shall reign as Queen and you shall control her and all others if you will but share the power of the Great Crystal with me. The image then showed Mark on a bed with several other Gelfling women. 'You can have all the women you want,' Bal-maron said, 'and all the riches you could ever desire. Everything shall be yours.'

'No,' Mark replied firmly. 'I desire neither power nor control over others. To force others to your will is not the Gelfling way.'

'Power is the greatest thing that there is,' Bal-maron said. 'Let me show you just what power is.' Once again he made a slight movement of his fingers and this time two demons entered the room, dragging Aughra between them.

'What is this old hag's life worth?” Bal-maron asked.

'She is a friend,' Mark replied. 'No price can be set on her life.'

'Not even the price of the Great Crystal?' Bal-maron asked.

'Not even that' Mark replied.

Bal-maron gestured and suddenly fierce flames seemed to consume Aughra's body. Her screams echoed through the castle as Mark watched.

'Do you not care for your friend?' Bal-maron asked.

'What friend?' Mark replied, moving his hand in a cutting gesture. Immediately the flames stopped and Aughra began to change. Within moments she had become just another demon who then left the room with the other two demons.

'An illusion, nothing more,' Mark responded.

'So the talisman does give you some powers,' Bal-maron said. 'Let's see just what the extent of those powers are.' Suddenly the floor opened beneath Mark and he fell into a dungeon room. The floor above him sealed up as he stood. The door to the room he was in was open, so he left the room, entering a short corridor which led only to another door and yet another room. Mark entered cautiously but saw nothing dangerous. He entered the room and the door closed behind him.

Suddenly a hidden door in the wall opened and Alera entered the room. She was nude, her hair wildly disarrayed, a look of intense excitement in her eyes. She began the mating dance, hovering just above the floor of the room, moving more erotically than she ever had before. Despite himself Mark found he was unable to take his eyes from her as she wouold dance near him, brush him with her hair, rub her breasts against him, laugh softly and dance quickly away. The odors she was producing were already exciting him, making him want to forget all else and give himself up to wild abandon with his bondmate.

Alera danced close again to mark, brushing her long hair agaisnt his face. Exercising the last remnants of his self-control Mark stumbled back against the door and then stopped, breathing heavily. Desperately he pushed on the door and it opened. Mark entered the corridor without glancing back, knowing that if he did so all would be lost. He could still hear Alera calling to him as he moved down the corridor to an opening on the left.

The opening led into yet another corridor. Suddenly a giant spider dropped form the ceiling near Mark. its legs moved in an agitate fashion as its spider eyes seemed to glare at the small Gelfling.

Mark grabbed one of the torches lighting the hall and waved it toward the spider which retreated down the corridor with a sickening shriek. Soon other creatures appeared in the corridor and advanced steadily towards him. There was no choice left but to use the talisman powers and once again bolts of energy lanced out from Mark's fingertips, disintegrating the creatures they touched. After the last of the attackers died Mark fell roughly to the floor, exhausted by the ordeal. Slowly he forced himself to his feet and set off further down the passageway.

Finally he came to the room where Aughra was held captive. The door into her cell was locked and he could see through a window in the door that the acid had nearly reached Aughra's feet. Mark grabbed on to one of the torch holders and pulled himself up, then kicked the door as hard as he could. The acid had weakened the door and it shattered under his kick, acid pouring out onto the floor of the corridor and into the earth it was made from. After a few minutes Mark undid his belt and touch the end of it to the floor. Seeing that it sustained no damage he dropped to the floor and then entered the room.

'Knew you would come, I did,' Aughra cackled. 'Get me down. You and I, a lesson we'll teach the dark one.'

Mark saw a set of keys hanging just outside Aughra's reached, placed there no doubt to torment her in her captivity. He grabbed the keys and undid her shackles. Aughra dropped roughly to the floor then stood, complaining all the time.

'Where are others?' she asked.

'I don't know,' Mark replied. I saw Alera, or a demon in her shape, in a room earlier. I don't know where Jen and Kira are. Mark looked at Aughra, then asked her if she could walk.

Aughra groaned and grunted a few times and then shook her head yes. Together they moved off down the corridor and, within a few minutes, found another door. Although the door was locked, the keys left in Aughra's room were able to unlock the door. As soon as they door was opened they could see that Jen had been pushed back to a far corner of the room, nearly surrounded by the green fungus.

Mark had to use more of his talisman's power to clear a path for Jen to escape. They continued to explore but could find no signs of Kira.

'This has been too easy,' Mark said.

'Easy?' Aughra said indignantly. 'Poor Aughra hang on wall. You call that easy?'

'If the wizard had wanted you dead he could have done so long before now,' Mark replied. He paused for a moment and then continued. 'He could have kept sending creatures against us until I was overwhelmed. I think he's just playing some sort of sick game with us.'

At that moment they reached a huge chamber. The ceiling was cured, almost in a parody of a church ceiling. Hundreds of torches burned in holders on the walls. balconies seemed to just out everywhere, while a heavy perfumed mist hunt in the air.

'You are right, Gelfling,' the wizard began. 'I was playing with you like a child plays with its toys. You are nothing more than a game to me.' Suddenly the wizard's hands moved as he uttered a loud spell. A greyish light flew from his fingertips and engulfed Aughra. When the light had cleared Jen and Mark could see that Aughra had been turned to stone.

Before they could react to that they saw Kira enter the room. She was nude, her long hair flowing down over her shoulders. Mating scents poured from her body as she approached Jen. A movement of the wizard's fingers and Jen's clothing fell to the floor. Kira began to kiss the Gelfing passionately, running her hands over his body. As Mark watched he saw the wizard cast another spell and Kira's body began to change.

Jen had begun to respond to Kira's passionate embrace and was holding her tightly against him, his mouth pressed firmly against her breast. What he failed to see was Kira's lower body beginning to change into that of a snake.

Another move of the wizard's fingers and both Gelfling disappeared. 'He will find great pleasure in her arms,' the wizard spoke, and at the height of their sexual excitement she will devour him as a snake devours its helpless prey.'

The wizard looked at Mark. 'Now it is only the two of us,' he said, advancing on the Gelfling. Mark, meanwhile, closed his eyes and concentrated on the image of the Great Crystal and the female face he had seen in it.

'Spirit of Thra,' he called, 'take us from this place. Take us to where no others will be hurt.'

Bal-maron took a few more menancing steps towards Mark and then stopped as a purple mist filled the room. Before he could react the mist covered the wizard and the Gelfling.

Showdown

When the mist cleared Mark saw that he and the wizard had been transported to the top of a distant mountain. No signs of animals or plants could be seen nearby, so their final battle was to take place where no one else could be hurt.

The face Mark had seen in the Great Crystal now seemed to be looking down on him from far above.

'Tricks will avail you nothing,' the wizard sneered. 'You call upon the spirit of the planet. So be it. I call upon the power of the dark gods and of all that is dark in the universe. You will die, Gelfling, alone and away from those above.'

With that the wizard unleashed a series of fireballs directly at Mark. The talisman on his Mark's chest glowed brightly and energy shot out, deflecting each of the fireballs. Bursts of light form Mark's fingers attacked the wizard but were parried by the wizard's own defenses.

The battle grew in intensity as both combatants tried everything possible to defeat the other. Eventually both ended up bleeding, torn and exhausted, on their knees, still struggling to destroy the other.

'You cannot win,' the wizard gasped. 'I have over a thousand years of experience to draw upon The dark gods will protect me.'

'And I have the love of my friends and my bondmate, and the spirit of Thra behind me. You can never triumph over that.'

Suddenly the wizard changed tactics from his magical assaults to a more physical approach. He jumped at Mark, trying to force the young Gelfling off the cliff. The two grappled fiercely and suddenly both rolled over the cliff's edge.

As they fell Mark could see the wizard change into a fierce hawk. Mark plunged closer to the ground and concentrated as deeply as he could. His body suddenly flared and reformed itself into that of an eagle. Spotting the hawk heading towards the castle, eagle-form Mark chased after him.

The wizard landed in his meditation chamber and returned to his normal form. Mark landed moments after, becoming a Gelfling in the blink of an eye. The wizard ran away and Mark gave chase, noting that Aughra remained petrified. They passed another chamber and Mark could see that Kira had become even more of a snake, her lower body entirely snakelike and her upper body a mottled green with her head hanging to that of a snake. Jen, still under the wizard's spell, continued to nurse Kira's breast, running his hands over her body, not realizing what really was happening.

Passing yet another chamber Mark saw Alera, still doing her dance, still trying to entice him into the room to mate with her.

Anger flared through Mark as passed his friends and his bondmate. Anger such as he had never known stayed with him until he finally caught up to the wizard in another chamber.

'This ends here, this ends now,' said Mark, his voice barely a whisper. The wizard merely laughed as he watched the Gelfling seem to almost freeze, his body going rigid.

'You call the darkness from your universe,' Mark began, his voice slowly rising in strength. 'Yet I am know from this universe. Mark's eyes began to glow. 'I retain ties to not just my home universe, but to many, many others. Many of these have a Great Crystal in them, also. Many of them have seen monsters like yourself attack and be defeated by the powers of goodness, harmony and love. I call upon this universes now. I call upon the power of all the Great Crystals to channel their energies through me and to deal with you and your evil once and for all.'

Bal-moran was not sure what Mark was referring to, but there was no mistaking the brilliant light that now totally engulfed Mark's body and gradually was pushing out into the chamber. Suddenly all the light seemed to concentrate itself into Mark's talisman, running around its edges and down towards the very center. There, the light became unbearable in its brightness, gathering only for a moment before rushing out in one mighty stream directly towards the wizard.

In less than a blink of an eye the light engulfed the evil sorcerer, seeming to explode in its intensity. When the light finally died down and vanished, there was nothing left of the wizard. His dreams of power were once and for all over.

With the death of the wizard the spells that he had cast became undone. Aughra returned to her normal form. Kira's body became her own again as she and Jen held each other as tightly as they could. Alera ran into the room. Suddenly the walls of the wizard's domain began to vibrate and bits began to break off. The Gelfling along with Aughra ran as quickly as they could from the castle.

Soon after they left the castle crumbled into itself. The ground shook and a huge hole appeared beneath the castle and swallowed up its remnants. When the dust cleared no sign of the wizard or his evil structure remained.

Mark and Alera held each other tightly as did Jen and Kira. Aughra stood nearby, watching the Gelfling.

'The wizard's power was based on darkness and evil,' Mark said. 'I used the power of love and of light against him, and love's bright power triumphed. So it was, so it shall ever be.'

The group slowly walked away, heading back towards their own homes, the evil gone and the planet healed.

Love, ultimately, shall triumph.
