Episode 4: Love Battle

The episode opens with Kana working on boiling some eggs and singing at the same time. Nao and Yuka are watching her and Machiko walks in, stumbling over them. They can't figure out why Kana is fixing something to eat since she doesn't really do her household cooking chores.

Kana has fixed two bentos (boxes lunches), one for her and one for Tooru. Nao leaves for school and Yuka leaves for work.

Kana goes to the hockey rink and meets Tooru. She gives him the bento and he gives her a ticket for an upcoming hockey game.

In Nao's classroom, her science teacher says he is moving and needs someone to take care of two gerbils (constantly mistranslated as mice). Nao volunteers even though she doesn't like the animals. Naturally, Jun volunteers also.

At the store the guy that likes Yuka gives her some flowers but Yuka sees her boss and goes off to talk to him. She asks him to lunch but he says he already has a luncheon appointment but they could go out to dinner the next day.

At the house, Machiko is mashing some of the boiled eggs when Yumiko arrives. Yumiko says she's lost her appetite.

At the high school, Tenko sits down near Kana.

Back at the house, Yumiko says she thinks her husband might be having an affair.

In Nao's class she and Jun are there along with the teacher after class has dismissed. Nao and Jun tussle and one of the gerbils goes flying, ending up going right down Nao's blouse. Jun is trying to help but ends up touching her breasts and she slaps him.

In Kana's class, she's sound asleep.

At the ramen shop the manager, Koyangi, is opening up for the day. Soon Machiko arrives.

It's now night and Kana is walking. She runs into Tooru and he gives her the now empty bento box back. He tells her that the hockey game the next day is very important since some people from the American National Hockey League will be there. Tenko, unknown to them, is watching from nearby.

Nao and Jun are at home, Jun fixing dinner (as punishment for touching Nao's breasts). Machiko gets home.

Yuka is at the dentists, her fiancée, and ends up asking him if he is fooling around on her.

Later Kana and Yuka talk in Kana's bedroom. Later Machiko is looking for the hair dryer and enters Kana's room, seeing that she is asleep. Machiko finds pictures on the bed of Kana and Koji along with the ticket for the ice hockey game.

The next day Machiko and Yumiko are talking, Yumiko still worried about her husband. Koyangi arrives and gives Machiko some flowers.

At the middle school Nao is cleaning the steps and Jun arrives and tells her that the science teacher is leaving. She goes to talk to him and he tells her that he's moving back to his home town. His mother is ill and he's planning to get married. Nao breaks down into tears and runs off.

Kana is watching the soccer game. She looks at the hockey ticket and leaves.

Machiko is putting the flowers into a vase.

Kana gets to the hockey game and sees Tooru score the winning goal.

At the restaurant where Tooru works Yuka and her boss are eating. She tells him that she saw him going to lunch the previous day with a woman and she's obviously jealous.

Nao and Jun are sitting on a bench with Nao still crying. She says she doesn't want to go home that night and Jun assumes this means she wants to go to a love hotel.

Machiko is cooking using a wok and reading from a cookbook at the same time.

Tooru leaves the rink and runs into Tenko. They walk together for a bit and she says that she wants him to go out with her. He says he can't and she wants to know what he thinks of Kana.

At the restaurant Yuka and her boss are still talking. Matsushima's wife comes in and sees them, gets mad and leaves with him running after her.

At the ramen shop Nao and Kana are going to get something to eat.

Tooru arrives for work at the restaurant. Kana is there and Tenko arrives.

At home, Machiko has fixed lots of food but no one else is there to eat it. Dr. Maruyama arrives and has brought flowers for Yuka.

At the restaurant Tenko and Kana get into a fight. Machiko and the dentist get there while Tenko and Kana end up going into the restaurant to continue there fight while Yuka comes out.

After the fight ends Tenko leaves. Machiko comes in and slaps Tooru and Kana then starts to fight her mother. Tooru finally admits that he likes Kana.

Machiko, Yuka and Kana get home but Machiko realizes that Nao is not there. They go to the ramen shop and Nao is asleep. She wakes up and Machiko says that they all need to choose the one they love the most.

She goes on to say that her husband said that women should be devoted which means...

The girls chime in "to bring out the best in yourself", "do not waver from the path you have chosen", and "to be earnest and single-minded."
