Santa Anita Pacemaker, Issues 11 through 15

Vol. 1 #11, May 26, 1942

Page 1: Elections are going ahead for sectional representatives. The Canteen, instead of taking cash, will take coupons from coupon books the residents will get. There's also an article on air raid regulations.

There was also a blackout.

Page 2: A new women's editor has been appointed. There's an article on church services, and one of a woman who died in a rest home of an illness. As to recreation, there will be an Issei songs and comedy performance. Sumo, Cub Scouts, sewing and bridge are also discussed.

Page 3: Someone at the camp built a model airplane which flew successfully. A girls' field day has been announced. Music drew a crowd, and a flower garden has also drawn attention. Twilight softball schedules are results are listed.

A raid busted up a bunch of gamblers.

There's still a problem with people not eating where they are supposed to and not wearing the proper button.

Page 4: The editor's Win, Place & Show column, plus an article on how some people have given interesting names to their residences. A couple of kids, 10 and 12, did some very good dancing. There's a songfest scheduled, and a Sweet & Slow dance. The drill team needs members. There's been one birth, one death (a girl six years old) and one operation.

Vol. 1 #12, May 29, 1942

Page 1: A reporter from the Pacemaker met some people who just arrived at the camp. The election has been postponed for a week. There's an article on a Memorial Day program, and what the Scouts will do on that day.

Page 2:

This is the Little Nebo character I've mentioned before. An article on Medical Calls notes that there is 1 doctor for every 3000 people at the camp, and certain rules need to be followed. The movie to be shown that night will be Spring Parade. The girls' clubs schedule is posted, and there will be a gymnastic formations practice.

Page 3: The library has received a donation of more books. There will be a community sing, and there was a weight-lifting competition. The boy scouts are looking for new recruits. The coupon books sales are brisk. A four-year-old boy has died at the camp. Softball schedules and results are given.

The gamblers have been found guilty and sentenced.

Page 4: A Men's Glee Club has been started. People with extra brooms and pans need to turn them in. The Win, Place & Show editorial shorts column. A Lost & Found department has been set up. The artist who drew Little Neebo will speak. Religious services are listed.

Vol. 1 #13, June 2, 1942

Page 1: 2740 people are taking school courses. The Constitution of the Santa Anita Self-Assembly will be printed in this issue. The Constitution had to be approved by someone in San Francisco.

Part of the first page. DeWitt has order a twice-daily counting of the residents. The camp has reached 18,527 residents. There are also many job openings.

Page 2: The Win, Place & Show column, and some people have come up with a version of basketball that can be played. There's also a Little Neebo cartoon.

An editorial about the success of the Pacemaker.

Page 3: Some boy built a model of a ship sunk at Pearl Harbor, and there's been a wedding. 150 workers and their families are leaving for Idaho to work on farms. The articles on the medical unit and education continue on this page. Memorial Day services were observed.

Page 4: There's an article on baseball teams, and there's a meeting of the Artists and Writers' Group. Five boys and two girls have been born. The article on the camp from page 1 continues.

There's been a theft at the camp. A course in democracy is starting. There's an article about the camp government.

Vol. 1 #14, June 3, 1942

Page 1: The Win, Place & Show column is one the first page for some reason. Section leaders will be chosen in an election on that Friday. The Issei are enthusiastic about the election. The dance for the next night has been canceled. There's also an article on which stall Seabiscuit was kept in.

Page 2: Twilight softball results are given, and there was a successful fire drill. There will be a program of classical music, and a couple has been wed. There's also another Little Neebo cartoon.

Page 3: The entire page is a list of the candidates up for election.

Page 4: A memorial service for someone killed in an auto accident in Iowa will be held. The Recreation Field's Office has opened. The Girl's Play Day has been postponed. All Lost & Found sections in the camp have been coordinated into one location. The person who named Little Neebo will get a drawing of him. The article about the Issei and the election is continued. Also, the Win, Place & Show column continues.

Vol. 1 #15, June 6, 1942

Page 1: The results of the election are held, with women winning in four of the districts. There are short articles on a dance, art classes, Men's Glee Club, and a get-to-know me meeting. The newspaper will be moving to new quarters.

Page 2: There's a Little Neebo cartoon, and the girls are collection scrap for various projects. An immunization day will be held, fire alarm instructions are given, and there will be a music hour. There will be an Arts & Craft show, and the Artists and Writers group has elected a president of their group.

Page 3: The entire page is the unofficial returns for all the runners-up in the election.

Page 4: The Win, Place & Show column is on this page. There's an article noting that each living unit will be allocated its own toilet paper, and none will be available in the bathrooms any more since so much was wasted before. Religious services are listed, and the paper needs more reporters. There's been four births, and two operations. There will be a scout meeting, and there was a funeral for a five-year-old that had died.

An interesting article on how the evacuation has basically resulted in the demise of the Little Tokio section of Los Angeles.
