The book starts out by talking about the Japanese efforts to take New Guinea and then move on to Australia. The book moves from the Battle of Coral Sea to Guadalcanal. It then goes into the death of Yamamoto.
The rest of the book follows other island campaigns on through the taking of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
It think it might have been interesting if the author had added some material on just why the island-hopping method was chosen and how it was chosen over other approaches to fighting the war.
