Asteroid
The movie starts with a bang with a meteor impacting near a road, causing a truck carrying gasoline (probably) to crash and explode. It also starts a major fire.
This one also has a woman scientist who has a kid, although her husband has died. There's a comet approaching the earth and there are some asteroids trailing along. The other main character is a guy that works for FEMA. There's also a black family where the guy works in the fire department.
There are two asteroids approaching, one capable of causing destruction for maybe a hundred mile radius or more; the other is as large if not larger than the one that hit Earth 65 million years ago and helped contribute to the extinction of the dinosaurs.
They talk to the President and tell him there is a need to evacuate two million people from the area where the smaller of the two asteroids will probably hit.
Then there's another character, a doctor in Texas. Then there's the guy that heads the hospital where the other guy works, and he's the scientist's father. They evacuate the area, but the first asteroid breaks up and the damage is only to a dam and flooding of the town.
The only way to stop the second, and bigger, asteroid is to use a special Air Force laser. Instead of deflecting the asteroid, though, the asteroid gets blown up which creates a lot of meteors that can hit the Earth. The meteor storm will last twelve hours.
The main peace impacts on Dallas and levels the city. About 1/3 rd of the film concerns what happens after the pieces hit.
The movie is a pretty good one, especially in how it shows the damage from a strike and how difficult it would be afterwards.
