House of Ghosts

Sept. 1943

This is a really good Shadow story revolving around an old, and allegedly haunted, house. One particular family has ruled the house for ages, although times have been better for them. The house has a faithful servant, and is host to a variety of guests.

Not all the guests have the interests of the family at heart, though, including three crooks to start off, one of them an embezzler.

Strange things happen at the house, and soon a man dies in the graveyard. Burke and Margo Lane become involved, as does the Shadow. Before long there are more ghosts, more murders, secret passageways, a ghost-hunter, more crooks, and the return of someone who was allegedly dead.

It all makes for a very good Shadow story. The writing style is such that you can see the events in your mind's eye as you read them. There is a very detailed description of the house, so detailed you could probably do floor plans from the description.

Margo Lane is somewhat useful in this story, although she literally falls into trouble on her own, which she seems to have a talent for doing.

The ghost hunter manages to go about his hunting in a fairly good style (for the times), and does take appropriate steps to determine if something is a paranormal event or just some regular, physical event that has an solid explanation.
