Later Nancy, George and Bess go to the castle and encounter some nasty dogs. Nancy and George climb over the wall but Bess remains behind. They explore the grounds and find some damage done by a pick-ax. They wade in some water and keep some shells. Daniel Hector, the executor, arrives. Bess sneaks into his car.
Chapter 8
1945: The same things happen that happened in the 1973 chapter 7 up through her father's talk with Hector. Nancy pilots a plane over the castle and spots smoke. Ned Nickerson is in South America. Later Nancy, George and Bess go to the castle and find a no-trespassing sign.
1973: Nancy and George separate. Bess leaves the car, is chased by the hounds, and takes refuge in a tree. George's clothes are stolen by the young punk. Nancy explores and gets trapped in one of the castle's towers. She overhears the grown-up crooks. The dogs leave and Bess comes down from her tree and meets George. They climb out over the wall.

She gets a report from the policeman that trailed the thug that had trailed Nancy. The three girls meet Salty and go to the castle via a water route. Nancy finds an entrance to a section of the castle grounds they want to check out.

Nancy finds out the woman might have used an assumed name.
Nancy is told to talk to 'Old Joe,' the hospital's custodian, a black. They talk and he uses the stereotyped black language. The missing woman could be crippled. Nancy is trailed and Mr. Drew opens the door and the man falls in. (This part was in chapter 11 of the 1973 edition)
1973: The brat tells the crooks someone may be inside the grounds. They find a fountain that has good-tasting water, and a carving about Cinderella. The three end up being chased by the crooked lawyer.
Chapter 15
1945: Mr. Drew questions the guy while Nancy arranges for someone to follow him. The policeman will pretend to have a limp (in the 1973 version he pretended to have a bad cough.) Nancy later visits Mrs. Fenimore who is upset from a visit by the lawyer. They find a clue in a picture of the original Heath Castle. (This was in chapter 11 of the 1973 version)
1973: The girls escape. They encounter Lt. Masters. The woman is sure Teddy is a thief himself. The group encounters more police and take a boat to the Castle to search for Salty. Nancy has stayed behind and talked to her father who has a lead on the missing woman.
1973: Juliana and her sister Mrs. Fenimore are reunited. The estate as it stands is worth almost nothing. Nancy goes back to it and remembers the water fountain. The water is tested and it can be bottled and sold due to its mineral content. She also contacts a company that is interested in the whelk shells.
The story then jumps a year ahead. The castle and grounds are in better shape. Handicapped kids are being helped. Joan is also there and helping out. The brat Teddy is in a 'special school' where he is supposedly doing well. A valuable pearl is found and returned to Julianna.
The 1973 book ends with chapter 20, so the next part will be summaries of the last five chapters of the 1945 edition.
Chapter 21
Arrangements are made for Joan to spend some time on a farm. Her father goes to the police station to report on what Nancy had seen and heard at Heath Castle. Nancy and her father visit Mrs. Fenimore who says the Hookers have moved away. She says Joan won't need to go away to a farm. They consult the police about one of the men Nancy ran into at the estate.
Bess and George go to the Drew's place, but Nancy and her father have already left. Hannah tells them Mehearty said he heard that someone plans to have Nancy arrested. A policeman arrives with a warrant that night.
Nancy and her father find out more about Julianna. They are also told about a possible link to a flower shop.
Chapter 22
Nancy and her father drive up to the town and find out a Miss Flower is a recluse. They find out she's been kidnapped. They find out about Hector's claim to have the rightful woman inheritor. Nancy later visits Mrs. Fenimore. Mrs. Fenimore, Nancy and Joan all go to see the supposed inheritor. They realize the woman is a fake. Nancy drives towards home, stops at the police station, and they tell her they have a warrant for her arrest.
Chapter 23
The warrant is for trespassing. They try to clear things up but Hector is not available, so Nancy is allowed to go home if she promises to return the next morning. The next morning she meets with Lt. Masters and goes to Heath Castle with other policemen being stationed outside the grounds.
They find a dungeon and Florianna imprisoned in a cell. She talks about her background and says she's like to turn the castle into a 'beauty spot.' (No mention is made of making it a place for handicapped kids.) They all end up trapped in the dungeon.
Chapter 24
Lt. Masters is the one who uses the police whistle. Florianna faints. The other policemen rescue them. The two thugs have been captured and are in handcuffs. Keep is also there. He's totally defiant. The thugs rat him out and Florianna calls for Keep's arrest.
Chapter 25
The sisters are reunited. Nancy meets with Mehearty the next day. They go to the castle area beach and he digs for clams and finds lot of them. They are the ones with the valuable dye in them. Notes are found about the dye. Mr. Drew provides money for start-up and the button factory gets going again. Mehearty helps with the clams and a chemist helps with formulas for the dyes.
The water from the fountain has curative properties, especially for bone disorders, and is thus another source of income. Some time later we find out that crippled children are at the estate (a point picked up in the 1973 version). Jeddy, the brat, continued his life of crime and got sent to a 'special school.' Mr. Drew restores to Florianna a missing pearl that Walt had meant for her.
