The Clue in the Crumbling Wall

I will be comparing two editions of the second volume in the Nancy Drew Mysteries series. One will be the 1930 edition, and the other one will be an edition copyrighted 1973 has text that was revised in 1973. Fans of Nancy Drew know that the first 34 Nancy Drew books were eventually re-written, her character changed somewhat and various stereotypes removed. The number of chapters was also cut from 25 to 20, and the total page number also decreased.

Basic Comparisons

The 1930 edition has 25 chapters and consists of 217 pages. There is an illustration on the interior cover and the first actual page, and an illustration on the page which is opposite the title page.

The 1973 chapter only has 20 chapters and 181 pages, and also has no interior illustration on the inside cover or first page. There is an illustration opposite the title page, and one illustration in chapter 1. There are also illustrations in chapters 5, 9, 13 and 17.

Covers

The 1973 book ends with chapter 20, so the next part will be summaries of the last five chapters of the 1945 edition.

Chapter 21

Arrangements are made for Joan to spend some time on a farm. Her father goes to the police station to report on what Nancy had seen and heard at Heath Castle. Nancy and her father visit Mrs. Fenimore who says the Hookers have moved away. She says Joan won't need to go away to a farm. They consult the police about one of the men Nancy ran into at the estate.

Bess and George go to the Drew's place, but Nancy and her father have already left. Hannah tells them Mehearty said he heard that someone plans to have Nancy arrested. A policeman arrives with a warrant that night.

Nancy and her father find out more about Julianna. They are also told about a possible link to a flower shop.

Chapter 22

Nancy and her father drive up to the town and find out a Miss Flower is a recluse. They find out she's been kidnapped. They find out about Hector's claim to have the rightful woman inheritor. Nancy later visits Mrs. Fenimore. Mrs. Fenimore, Nancy and Joan all go to see the supposed inheritor. They realize the woman is a fake. Nancy drives towards home, stops at the police station, and they tell her they have a warrant for her arrest.

Chapter 23

The warrant is for trespassing. They try to clear things up but Hector is not available, so Nancy is allowed to go home if she promises to return the next morning. The next morning she meets with Lt. Masters and goes to Heath Castle with other policemen being stationed outside the grounds.

They find a dungeon and Florianna imprisoned in a cell. She talks about her background and says she's like to turn the castle into a 'beauty spot.' (No mention is made of making it a place for handicapped kids.) They all end up trapped in the dungeon.

Chapter 24

Lt. Masters is the one who uses the police whistle. Florianna faints. The other policemen rescue them. The two thugs have been captured and are in handcuffs. Keep is also there. He's totally defiant. The thugs rat him out and Florianna calls for Keep's arrest.

Chapter 25

The sisters are reunited. Nancy meets with Mehearty the next day. They go to the castle area beach and he digs for clams and finds lot of them. They are the ones with the valuable dye in them. Notes are found about the dye. Mr. Drew provides money for start-up and the button factory gets going again. Mehearty helps with the clams and a chemist helps with formulas for the dyes.

The water from the fountain has curative properties, especially for bone disorders, and is thus another source of income. Some time later we find out that crippled children are at the estate (a point picked up in the 1973 version). Jeddy, the brat, continued his life of crime and got sent to a 'special school.' Mr. Drew restores to Florianna a missing pearl that Walt had meant for her.
