The House on the Gulf

Britt and Bran are brother and sister. Their mother is divorced and wants very much to be a doctor. The problem is a lack of money. So Bran is able to convince her mother to move down to Florida for the summer and house-sit while the owners are off vacationing. This would give the family a decent place to live while the mother goes head to college.

One of the major problems with the book, though, is that fact that, for around three-fourths of it, you know at least one of the “twists” that's going to happen and it becomes a question wondering when Britt is just how long its going to take her to figure that her brother has not been truthful with her or her mother.

It turns out, though, that Bran has managed to foul things up even more than the reader is led to expect, and because of his actions he faces jail, his mother faces losing her scholarship and Britt faces having to deal with some personal feelings about her mother's parents.

It turns out all right in the end, but that's not enough to really save the book. The first major twist is just too painfully obvious and the only question is how long will it take for Britt to catch on. The only character you really feel sorry for is Britt.

The book is readable, but there are lots better ones to spend your time on.
