Ruined

This is a really good novel about a girl named Rebecca who has to go to New Orleans and live with someone there while her father has work to do in China.

The basic story concerns her rejection by other students, falling for one student, and a plot to murder her. But that's just the beginning as the book goes into the history of New Orleans and spends a lot of its time dealing with the social class system that is there, even naming the various levels of classes of people, almost all of which is determined by how rich the family is and how long the family has lived in New Orleans.

Rebecca also meets a ghost of a young black girl named Lisette, and this ties in to the social snobbery, a murder, a cover-up, and a curse that has lasted over one hundred years and that seems to be still active.

The way the author describes the city and the area near where Rebecca lives, the cemetery and Lisette, and the who social structure thing is extremely well done and at all times fascinating. This is definitely a good book to read.
