Grimm Fairy Tales Individual Issues

Issue 9

Kind of a neat cover on this issue. The story is based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the present-day story about a plan to kill a rich but mean husband so the wife can run off with her boyfriend. What they don't take into consideration is that the guy may actually be a sorcerer who happens to have bear statues in his garden.

Statues that don't take kindly to his being hurt by anyone.

Not everyone learns their lessons in tie.

Issue 21

This one is based on the story The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The present-day framing is a college class where the old professor has taken a groping interest in one of his female students. Belinda finds out and has the girl read the apprentice story where the Sorcerer is verbally abusing the girl who is his apprentice.

It turns out to be Belinda's own history.

The difference between the two, though, lies in the nature of the abuse. The student was being physically abused by her professor. She eventually kills him when he tries one too many times. Belinda, on the other hand, had been verbally abused constantly but as far as it seems was never sexually abused by the Sorcerer, yet she also kills him.

This all raises a few questions. Why didn't Belinda just leave the Sorcerer and find someone else to apprentice to? It would have been difficult but probably not impossible. As for the student, she could have transferred to another class, dropped the class and taken it at a later time, or reported the professor's behavior to her adviser, although she would not be able to prove what was going on.

In neither case was the end result justified.

Grimm Fairy Tales #45

The story is about a girl who heads a sorority. She is total looney tunes. At a try-out for memberships she has each of four girls hold a human heart and squeeze it over themselves, and then has them eat it. Only one of the three refuses and leaves.

She meets a guy named Fenton who recruits her to serve someone. Meanwhile, Belinda and Baba Yaga meet and go through a portal and end up in a desert. Then there's a short section where Sela finds out about the Darkhoarde.

Then the story returns to Fenton and the girl where she gets to meet the evil person she is going to serve.

A dark story on all fronts.

Grimm Fairy Tales #50

There's some backstory about Sela that starts off the book. The Piper is involved in Erik trying to kill Sela and a major war is in the offing. Not all the good people survive. Then there's more about Sela's past.

Once again there's the usual type of fighting, using swords and magical powers of a sort against a group that is using swords and magic powers of a sort. Why do the people with the magical powers never seem to conjure up somewhat more practical weapons like machine guns, say, and maybe a tank or two. At least the people with the swords would be able to be cut down pretty quickly with modern weapons. The magic users would probably be too busy trying to defend the others and that would leave them open to attack. Yet the fights like this one always seem to be with some kind of rules that say old-time weapons only.

Issue 51

In this story you've got an evil exiled king who has come back and wants his land and his power back, and wants to get revenge. He's got an ultra-nasty wizard supporting him. The ultra-nasty wizard has an incredibly strong hatred for Sela and is determined to kill her.

Erik, her boyfriend, is a souless thing at the moment, a body that is nothing but a shell. Then, to top it off, Death himself appears and says hi.

======================================================================

Issue 52

Sela has a brief battle with Death before he tells her he came there to help her. He wants her to retrieve something for him. He wants his kingdom of Limbo back. He claims he will release Erik's soul if she gets him this thing he needs.

Meanwhile the horde is going on their campaign of death and destruction. Sela is attacked by a bull that breathes fire, but a stag intervenes to help her.

======================================================================

Issue 53

Sela is facing off against another foe in Myst. This one has assumed the shape of a huge bull that breaths fire. He knocks her over a cliff but she's saved by the bird. A guy named Bolder shows up and, instead of attacking the bull, he attacks the ground the bull is on. The cliffside collapses and the bull falls to its (his) death.

She goes with Bolder back to his place where he tells her the story of the guy that wants to kill her so bad, Morrigan, who once was a normal and decent guy. It involves a particularly greedy individual who wants power in a kingdom and his work to hoodwink the king. Morrigan ended up with acid in his face, led a failed attempt to attack the king's forces and free his love, and then made a deal with death itself.

In other words, he turned to the dark side of the Force. Completely.

Issue 54

Flashback to when Sela was pregnant and living with Erik. There's an attack on their home by Ares. Then Sela wakes up from her dreaming about what had happened. The orc armies are on the move as Sela and her companion set off. Sela has power that she an kill with, but also power that she can use to heal with.

She helps a number of animals during her journey.

======================================================================

Issue 55

Sela and her companion are fighting the Goblin Queen and her followers. They are defeated. Meanwhile, the evil army deals with the death of their master and the evil character named Gruel decides to become the leader and accept something that will give him much more power.

Meanwhile, the Goblin Queen assigns Sela some tasks to do and, if successful, she will set Sela and her companion free. The concept that doing good deeds can bring a positive payback later is shown. Still, the Goblin Queen argues with Sela and another battle starts.

======================================================================

Issue 56

Sela and Bolder are in the Goblin Queen's fortres, under attack by the goblins. The wolves attack from outside (Sela had helped free one earlier in the series). She gets the limbo key from the queen, then the queen escapes.

Sela gives the key to Death and Death returns to our world.

A third member joins the group as they head towards a city, not knowing that the horde is heading towards the same city to attack it.

======================================================================

Issue 57

Sela and others are headed towards a city while the enemy is headed towards the same city. The history of one of the main evil people is given. Sela and the others don't get to the city in time and will have to fight the enemy.

======================================================================

Grimm Fairy Tales 58

The story starts with an event from Myst's past and then moves to the present where Sela and the others are battling the goblin horde. Sela sets off something that seems similar to an atomic explosion. They then get into the castle and meet a witch named Druanna.

She agrees to help Sela if Sela agrees to help her. A giant-size version of Orcus appears to the city and demands they turn over Sela and the others and he might spare the city from destruction.

======================================================================

Grimm Fairy Tales 59

The situation in the castle is getting worse as a lot of the people want to turn Sela and the others over to the enemy to protect themselves. Druanna sets out to rescue them although something is wrong with her.

The artwork as far as Sela goes doesn't seem to be very good this issue. I'm also not sure why they still call the comic Grimm Fairy Tales since it no longer has anything to do with modifying established fairy tales which was a strong point early on.

Grimm Fairy Tales #60

The evil one attacks and tries to kill Gaia. A bunch of birds appear and take her to safety while the evil beings are attacking the fort. Sela and the others find Gaia who talks about her own past.

Gaia and Sela are able to work together and destroy the entire attacking army except for the leaders, one of which transforms into a dragon.

The story is still interesting, although it's also interesting how many issues it takes any more to complete a story arc.
