She performed by invitation of Harvard University's English Department. Shortcomings in her performance were treated nicely.

“The primary purpose of this production was educational, but the event turned into a love feast for the popular star.” (Maude Adams, an American Idol: True Womanhood Triumphant in the Late-Nineteenth and Early-Twentieth Century Theatre, doctoral thesis, 1984, Eileen Karen Kuehnl)

Reviews

“And at the close, the Harvard cheer was given for Miss Adams, and she was presented with a huge laurel wreath” Boston Evening Transcript, June 4, 1908

“Of Miss Adam's Viola it is perhaps too early to speak decidedly, as this was the first time that she had acted the part and there is no doubt that further study will round out her conception of Shakespeare's heroine. In many respects the part is well suited to her. There is a simplicity and girlishness in Viola which the actress portrayed so charmingly that even when she did not grasp the character, one could forget it on account of the grace and sweetness which throughout characterized her impersonation.” Boston Evening Transcript, June 4, 1908

The first article is an ad for a performance of the play. Note that the most expensive seat is $2.50. This is for the original series of performances, whereas the second article is for a revival of the play, in effect, years later (which I have as play 76 in my listing).
