Ranma Ichibunnoni

This is another series I found that I wanted to add to my reviews of Ranma-chan/Ranko series. The only problem I had is that this series has two endings; the original ending I found quite upsetting (that’s my problem, not the author’s, and I understand that). There was also another ending, and that one I found that I liked, so I am reviewing that version of the story. All but the last couple of chapters are the same in both versions.

Episode 1: The panda enters the dojo with two “hostages,” one of them being Ranma, and the other being a girl with long black hair. The girl is Ranko. She and Akane have the “fight” in the dojo that Ranma-chan and Akane had in the traditional story.

A major difference is that Ranma, in this story, is not cursed at all, but Ranko is cursed. Similarities include Akane walking in on Ranma when he is taking a bath, and Akane being engaged to Ranma.

Episode 2: Ranko, Ranma and Akane head for school, only to be met by the traditional wave of boys who are after Akane.

Episode 3: In a change from the traditional story, it’s Ranko and Akane who want to fight and jump out the third-floor window, rather than Ranma and Kuno. Ranko defeats Kuno in a later, non-canon fight.

Episode 4: Ranko, not Ranma-chan, gets Kuno’s challenge letter, the roses, and the profession of love from Kuno.

Episode 5: Kuno wants both Ranko and Akane. Ranko gets doused by cold water and suddenly is very feminine and kisses Kuno. When she gets hit by hot water she reverts to her “normal” self. It rains and she becomes super-feminine again.

Episode 6: Ranko tells Akane what happened to her. Ranma almost fell into the spring of drowned girl but Ranko saved him; she fell in, and it had a psychological effect on her, turning her into a sort of bimbo-ish, “young” girl when hit with col> water. Ryouga shows up and goes after Ranma.

Episode 7: Ryoga and Ranma have their traditional bread fight. Ranko’s hair gets cut short by one of Ryoga’s bandanas, rather than Akane’s hair. Akane, though, ends up cutting her hair anyhow and tries to comfort Ranko, and notices that Ranko’s hair is really red; she dyes it black.

Episode 8: Ranko finds P-chan, but in this version names him Ryo-chan. Ranko also admits that Ryoga is a “hunk.”

Episode 9: Ryoga is developing feelings for Ranko, but has a problem with being scared of what happens if she finds out he’s Ryo-chan, and he also still wants to take revenge on Ranma, but Ranma’s her brother, etc. Meanwhile Ranko is jealous of Akane and feels Ranma is getting further and further away from her.

Episode 10: Ranko explains to Akane why Ranma is afraid of cats. Ranma hums a tun and it turns out Ranko is afraid of sharks since she was given the Shark form of the Cat training Genma gave Ranma. It turns out, though, that Ranko is afraid of all forms of fish, not just sharks. Ranma and Ranko have been told that their mother is dead. Ryoga finds out Ranko was the one who accidentally knocked him into a cursed spring and leaves, and Shampoo shows up.

Episode 11: Shampoo attacks Ranko and she runs away. Ranma decks Shampoo with one punch (he’s not adverse to hitting girls in this series.) Shampoo immediately (that is, once she wakes up), considers Ranma her one true love, although she still wants to kill Ranko. Nabiki helps Ranko disguise herself as a boy to solve the problem of Shampoo trying to find her.

Episode 12: Ranko and Ranma work on a plan to get rid of Shampoo, and Ryoga returns, looking for Ranko. Akane and Ranma have a talk, and Ranma tells her he’d rather marry her than Kasumi or Nabiki. Ranma and Akane have a really good talk and end up kissing. It turns out it was Ranko, though! Ryoga gives Ranma flowers, thinking Ranma is Ranko disguised as Ranma. Ryoga also reveals that Ranma’s mother is not dead, and that he knows where she is.

Episode 13: Shampoo chases Ranko, but Ranma steps in. Shampoo kisses Ranma, Akane hits Ranma. There’s a hilarious section where Ranma and Ranko try to fool Shampoo and, after she leaves, Ryoga arrives, sees that Ranko’s breasts happen to be fully exposed, and passes out immediately.

Episode 14: Ukyo appears and latches onto Ranma. Ranko becomes upset (thinking Ukyo was the one liking her), and ends up fainting. Ryoga comes to Ranko’s defense. Ukyo stills thinks Ranma (not Ranko; it takes explaining) is her fiancee. Ranma becomes extremely angry and hits Ukyo. Genma enters and sort of explains things. Akane and Ranma later have a long talk about Ranko’s feelings towards Ukyo. Akane also asks Ranma to start being nicer towards her. Akane then kisses Ranma.

Episode 15: Happosai awakes and is freed from his cave. Ranko plans to run away and puts her plan into action on a Saturday. Ranko then goes to the school to get a few things of hers and runs into Ryoga. She and Ryoga end up walking together, going westwards for a day. They talk, kiss, and Ranko runs away.

Episode 16: Akane tries to comfort Ranma who is torn up over Ranko’s leaving. Ukyo runs into Ranko in the bathroom and they have a talk, and then Ranko runs off in search of Ryoga. She finds him and admits that she loves him. Happosai shows up at the dojo. Happosai has a magical lamp that grants wishes in exchange for panties.

Episode 17: Happosai is in search of a sort-for a holy pair of panties. Ranko teases Ryoga by saying she would have let him try something with her the previous night and he fainted. Ranko wants to go wandering with Ryoga. Meanwhile, Genma is throwing cats on Ranma to get him to go into cat-mode in order to somehow defeat Happosai. Royga, meanwhile, realizes that the Ranko he has been kissing is the cursed-ultra-feminine form and he throws hot water on her to change her back to her non-cursed form and then walks away. Ranko finds out Ryoga is Ryo-chan, though, and throws him into the trees.

Episode 18: Ranma (in Cat-fu mode) and Happosai fight. Ranko suddenly shows up. Genma rips her blouse open to distract Happosai. Ranko beats up Genma, then Akane and Ukyo attack Genma. It seems that Happosai has won the fight and Ranko will have to marry him.

Episode 19: Ryoga shows up. Ranko gets put into shark-mode in order to fight Happosai. Nabiki puts a cat on Ranma to terrify him and get him into Cat-fu mode. After a furious fight they finally manage to defeat Happosai.

Episode 20: The group is going to decide on what to do with the last wish from the genie. Ryoga was so badly injured in the fight against Happosai that Dr. Tofu says Ryoga will never be able to fight again, and that’s if he manages to live. Ranko steals the lamp later and tells Ranma she plans to wish herself out of existence, seeing herself as the basic problem behind everyone else’s problems. Ranma tries to talk her out of it.

Episode 21: A lot of discussion and the end result is that a wish is granted that Ryoga be restored to health so he and Ranko can become a couple again. Ranma and Akane end up becoming a couple; Ukyo comes to terms with everything, and Shampoo is nowhere to be seen.
