Information on Hanging Rock from a touring group

Hanging Rock is one of the most famous spots in Australia. It is an ancient place that has been immortalized in Joan Lindsay's book "Picnic At Hanging Rock" and was also the hiding place of Mad Dog Morgan, one of Australia's most notorious bushrangers. The climb to the top provides excellent views across the valley, while its rugged beauty has attracted picnickers and day trippers since it became a reserve in 1886.

The race course at the foot of the rock was opened in 1909 and is the setting of two of the most popular picnic races on the Victorian racing calendar-the New Year's Day and Australia Day Cup. Adjoining Hanging Rock is the Hanging Rock Winery, one of the largest wineries in the region.
