CountryMouse's Diary

Part 12

Monday, July 6, 1998: I started up a PostPet on Saturday, July 4th! He's a tortoise, and his name is Timothy! I haven't made a PostPet page yet, but I probably will eventually. :-)

Samuel is still sleeping a LOT. Pikachu is doing fine. My little Wave UFO alien is still in his "egg into the bowl" form (I guard him from microwaves now, since he looks soooo cute this way!). He's gotten to see some more movies: "The Replacement Killers" (handsome Chow Yun-Fat stars in this movie!), "Golden Earrings" (Marlene Dietrich, Ray Milland), "Wag the Dog",  and "Gattaca" (a disturbing movie with a gorgeous soundtrack).

Pikachu got to go out with us in the early afternoon on the Fourth of July (Independence Day here in the USA), when we set off some smoke bombs, some party poppers (you pull a string and streamers come out with a loud BANG!), and threw drop pops (they are little wadded up bits of paper containing a little explosive compound--you throw them down onto the pavement, and they explode with a loud POP!).  In the early evening my little Wave UFO alien was a part of it when we watched some old episodes of "The Twilight Zone" on TV while we had our supper of hot dogs and hot metts, potato salad, Jell-o salad, and strawberry ice cream (for dessert). However none of our virtual pets got to go out about 10pm, after a rain, when we lit sparklers and threw some more drop pops, adding our little bangs to the general sound of fireworks going off in the near distance all around us, in neighbours' yards and beyond. It was *neat*!

I got the single CD of Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummers' Dance" (I have had "The Book of Secrets", the CD this is from, for some time) and Patty Griffin's new CD, "Flaming Red", yesterday, so everyone got to hear *those*. WOW, "Flaming Red" is one album that really hits you and doesn't let up! I *love* this woman's voice! I was bowled over when I heard her sing "Cain" on the Lilith Fair double CD. Then I got her first CD, "Living With Ghosts", and was surprised that it seemed so reserved, and was so quietly acoustic. I like it...but I was expecting to be knocked down, like with "Cain"! Well, "Flaming Red" has now lived up to that! Yowza!

Friday, July 10, 1998: I probably haven't mentioned finfin in some time. I hadn't visited him in about a month, so I am having to start getting him used to me all over again. His "friendliness" meter is going up, though. :-)  Last night around 7pm Teo (the planet finfin lives on) had a GORGEOUS red sunset! And I saw finfin do something new that I hadn't seen before: I *saw* him catch a fish underwater at the Rem River Bank...then he took it up to his tree perch (not the really near one, but the one fairly near the observer) and ate it *there*. I took LOTS of photos!

Wednesday, July 15, 1998: Poor Samuel, he sleeps almost all the time. One of these days I will let him finish his tour of duty here on this planet and let him get on back to report to his superiors. Pikachu, by contrast, gets out for a walk everyday. finfin has been getting a lot of my attention lately, resulting in my getting to see the beautiful Northern lights a couple nights ago, among other things! My little Wave UFO alien has gotten to see lots of movies lately: "Arch of Triumph" (Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer), "Good Will Hunting" (*wonderful* movie!), "Marie Antoinette" (Norma Shearer, Tyrone Power ::swoon::), and "The Shawshank Redemption" (ANOTHER wonderful movie!). My PostPet tortoise, Timothy, seems to be doing well. Besides faithfully carrying letters for me and keeping his own secret diary, he's written me two letters! He's very cute and fun to care for.

Thursday, July 16, 1998, 3:02am: For some time I have been noticing something about my Wave UFO alien. It awakens at 9am, but doesn't go to bed until 1am. At 1am the alien "becomes unavailable", and the screen fills with static/snow. At 3am sometimes I have heard one single soft beep. The first time I heard it, I thought it was faeries or something! Later on, when I happened to be up, I knew it was the Wave UFO. A time or two recently I have caught it at 3am, the static clear for a few seconds, the little alien appearing. I thought I even saw a message go across. Tonight I finally made it out: TIME? TIME? *but* it went across upside-down and backwards! Veddy interesting...!

11:33pm: Well, I had a scare this evening...and if you don't hear from me suddenly, inexplicably, it will be a result or an extension of what happened a few minutes ago. I went to boot up the computer, and I knew it didn't sound right as it was going along. Then, in DOS, it said PRIMARY HARD DRIVE FAILURE. I turned off everything. I started it up again in a few minutes, and it booted okay. I have no idea why it did that, but I just thought I'd mention it *somewhere*, in case I seem to vanish at some point. ::sigh::
