Wuthering Heights by Emily BronteWednesday, September 10, 2008, 12:41am: I am not actively reading The Book of Stillmeadow at the moment. Cat'r and I watched the movie "Wuthering Heights" (1939--Merle Oberon, Laurence Olivier, David Niven) a week and a half ago. Then we decided to both read the book, by Emily Brontë. (click on the picture at left to see it larger). So that's what I'm reading currently; although when I finish it, I'll go back to The Book of Stillmeadow. Wuthering Heights is so gloomy. The style of writing is somewhat archaic but not at all difficult to read. Since I've seen the movie several times, I can't help seeing (a young and handsome!) Sir Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff. And having seen the movie helps in keeping the characters straight, since the book is not very good with that. There is certainly more to the story than was in the movie, even though I am not that far into the book!

9:58am: I am not sure that I'll be writing anything here tomorrow, on the anniversary of 9/11. As those of you who have read this diary for any length of time know, it's also my birthday. It has become fairly difficult to celebrate my birthday on its actual day. Since Cat'r won't be up here on the 11th anyway, that's a good excuse this year to wait until the 12th or 13th to celebrate my birthday instead.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 12:56pm: Hurricane Ike, which devastated Galveston, Texas on Friday, September 12th, created havoc wherever he went after that--even in the Midwest! On Sunday, September 14th, around noon or maybe a little earlier, a high wind warning was put out for our area, SW Ohio. We've had these warnings before, and they just cause a few limbs to be down, garbage cans to be rolled around, etc., so it didn't seem like a big deal.

Cat'r phoned around 12:30pm or so and said that he'd lost power in Louisville, KY. I looked out the window and it was WINDY! The trees were bending WAY over. I shut down my computer. It was 90*F. out at that point; so if we lost power, I knew I would have to get somewhere cool.

Read my entries in CountryMouse's Refuge for September 14th and 15th and 16th. Basically it's about our power going out at 2:20pm on Sunday, our driving around in a taxi trying to find SOMEplace to go that had electricity. Eventually in the evening we realized it was not going to be cool enough in our apartment for me to stay here, so we finally found a hotel after several phone calls (places either had no power or had no rooms). We stayed overnight at the Garfield Suites Hotel (NICE!). Our power was back on about 10:30am the next morning, so we went home.

We were the lucky ones. 90% of the people in our area lost power that day. A LOT of people had to go DAYS without power. It was very hard on restaurants and grocery stores, which had to throw out ALL their perishable foods. It was hard to find fresh food for a few days after the Blackout (it's being called Blackout 2008). Cat'r didn't have electricity when he left L'ville to come up here last Friday, but when he got back down there Sunday night, he finally did. Ratty, up in Butler County, just north of us, said that they had lots of twigs and leaves and stuff lying around, and one large (15-foot) piece of a maple tree fell down. Nothing was damaged though. Their power was out for 7 days, 1 hour, and 30 minutes. Eek!

Here are photos that I took in our suite/apartment (!) at the Garfield Suites Hotel. I wish I'd remembered to take a photo of the dining area. Anyway, all of it was just lovely, clean, quiet, and luxurious!

Tuesday, September 30, 2008, 7:48am: I finished reading Wuthering Heights yesterday. Emily Brontë would not recognize her book in the 1939 film version. The book is longer and more convoluted; the characters are much darker and unlikeable; and Heathcliff was not someone you would want to swoon over at ALL. Eek! This is a book of dark emotions, revenge, and hatred. A *good* book, but not the romantic fluff (comparatively speaking) that the movie is. It is still very much worth reading, though. I am pretty sure Kate Bush's song, "Wuthering Heights", must be based on the film.

Now I'm back to reading The Book of Stillmeadow. Ah, peace and tranquility!
