CountryMouse's Diary

Part 18

Rainbow swirly bar

Wednesday, July 14, 1999: 'Allo, 'allo! I've gotten all interested in keychain virtual pets again, after going off on Furby and Pokemon tangents for a *while*! So today I started Yoda in caseup my Star Wars GigaPet Virtual Friend Yoda (what a mouthful!). I hope I can continue to do well in my training! At first I was abysmal on my score--I couldn't get the hang of the games. Of course, reading the instructions more carefully would've helped ::grin:: After a while I got better. Plus I am relearning how to take care of a GigaPet. Each one is a little different in its needs; and what principles I applied to raising Teddy, my Komputer Koala, are not necessarily what are needed with being Yoda's apprentice. It seems Yoda needs food a LOT more often than I seem to remember Teddy did; Yoda wants you to clean out his hut pretty often (he keeps you *working*!), as opposed to making sure you only gave Teddy one bath a day (any more and his health would actually go down). And Yoda needs lots of naps! Anyway, check my Yoda page for updates, to see how we are both doing!

Friday, July 16, 1999: Yoda and I seem to be doing pretty well. I have the sound turned off most of the time, though--he can be very demanding! (beeps often and insistently!) It seems to help if you do the "teaching" and "learning" parts of it too. In other words, you ask him something; and he gives you one of his obscure Zen-like answers ::grin:: But it seems to satisfy him and help your score. He needs food often, fairly frequent cleanings-out of his hut, and it helps to work on learning to "use The Force" (these are the 3 games). If you notice him napping, it's good to turn out the lights. There is no set amount of points that feeding him soup (his main food) racks up. It varies greatly. I just keep checking the stats...or just stop when he shakes his head. I have only given him the snack food (bread) once or twice (never more than once a day, since that always caused health to go down on other GigaPets). Other than the sounds (beeps) being annoyingly frequent (but can be turned off), this GigaPet is less nerve-racking (in terms of needing to be very careful to do everything *perfectly*) than Teddy, my Komputer Koala, was (though I adored Teddy, because he was so totally *cute*). The graphics are exceptionally detailed and enjoyable, given it's such a small screen!

Wednesday, July 21, 1999: Still doing okay with Yoda, although sometimes his/my score gets down below 90 because I have the sound turned off and I forget him! Eek! But then I feed him, play the games (test my ability to use The Force), clean out his hut, etc.; and the score goes back up.

Someone (unidentified) signed my guestbook today, suggesting I say something about how to keep a virtual pet alive for a long time. It's a simple explanation: good care ::grin:: Just don't neglect your pet, try to keep it happy, etc. That means taking it with you places and paying attention to its needs. I know that's not always possible for people with jobs and school; but that's how.

Monday, August 2, 1999, 12:15am: There were several days when I didn't turn on the computer at ALL! We had been having temps. in the upper 90's, with heat indices in the 100's, for about 2 weeks, which is not the normal weather for the Ohio Valley. Finally, on Friday, July 30th, we were told that if we weren't able to conserve enough electricity, we would be facing random 3-hour rolling blackouts. But a lot of companies shut down at noon that day, sending everyone home. Many stores and restaurants turned off half or more of their lights. Here at da mouse's house, all we had on was the a/c and the refrigerator. No lights or computers or TV (except for 5 minutes here or there, for info). Anyway, that day our high temperature was 101oF. Fortunately the gas&electric company was able to generate enough power, with no blackouts, due to the many companies that voluntarily shut down. We got through it, and Saturday night/Sunday morning a cool front came through! Yay! We are now looking at highs in the low-to-mid 80's and overnight lows in the low-to-mid 60's for the coming week, which is right where we are supposed to be for this time of year.

On the virtual pet front, Yoda, for some reason, is still keeping me on as his apprentice, even though a lot of times my score goes down into the 70's. Well, I have the sound turned off most of the time, because he beeps *really frequently*; and often I forget him, resulting in his hunger meter and my score going down--eep!Pokemon Snap

I have been playing Pokemon Snap, the *wonderful* N64 game! It is SO MUCH FUN! I am not the best photographer (in this game--I do pretty well In Real Life, when I have time to set up shots), but I am totally addicted to this cute/fun/beautiful game!

Saturday, August 7, 1999: Well, I have completed my training with Yoda, my Star Wars GigaPet Virtual Friend. I suppose my score finally got too low for him to keep me on as an apprentice. See my Yoda page for the approximate final stats (I messed up and hit too many buttons when I should've put in my name in order to get my title). There were 3 games: the easiest (for me) was "Control", which I could do without looking at it. "Sense" I was not very good at; in "Alter" I finally had gotten to the point of lifting Yoda, but not a Star Fighter. All in all, I enjoyed this GigaPet Friend *as long as I had the sound turned off* ::grin::

Pokemon Snap StationI completed the PKMN Report for Professor Oak in Pokemon Snap; but I am still going back, trying to get better photos on my lower-scoring ones. I also want to try for some other shots that the guidebooks tell of: Pikachu riding on the back of Articuno, for instance! I have only printed out one sheet of photos so far--a sequence of one Magmar flaming and knocking over another one! LOL! I can see now why Professor Oak is adamant about Pokemon being *centered* in the pics--they won't print out as well otherwise, and parts can get lopped off when you peel off the stickers. Go get this game if you like Pokemon! Go get Pokemon (collectible) Smart Cards at Blockbuster Video and print out your favourite photos!

Sunday, August 29, 1999: I am still running my Pocket Pikachu (for the second time--no diary this time). He's past the 300,000 steps point, so he is now going to school, eating with chopsticks, etc. He's the only virtual pet I have active at this point.

Not everything I have is scanned and put up here yet. For example, I am trying to decide if DigiMonI want to raise a DigiMon (two of which I have had for over a year and a half!) with athol-brose right now (and let *him* do a diary on his Web site instead of mine ::grin::); or if I want to raise an Arukotch (Bandai's answer to the Pocket Pikachu, except it's also a dating game!). I am always such a perfectionist and feel I *must* make a page for every virtual pet I raise! (well, I didn't make one for the Wave UFO's I raised--the stats were almost non-existent)

As to Pokemon Snap, I have gotten sidetracked by other games, so that I haven't gone back to get more/better photos for Professor Oak. I did finish the PKMN Report for him, though. I finally got a (used) copy of Super Smash Brothers, just so I could fight as (and against) Pikachu! ::grin:: Kirby is soooo funny when he takes on Pikachu's attributes! Another game I have been enjoying is Chocobo Racing--totally cute! And most recently I have been playing Um Jammer Lammy, a great game, in which you play the guitar and help Lammy get through a bunch of stages so she can get to her gig in time! If you liked PaRappa the Rapper, this is the sequel, only more fun, in my opinion!

Oh boy, new season on TV is coming! The new Pokemon episodes start next Saturday, on Kids WB; Monster Rancher anime (cartoon) AND the game, Monster Rancher2, are coming this week! Other really great TV shows I have been watching: DigiMon (this is what has me reinterested in raising one); two cooking shows: Iron Chef (a cult classic in Japan) and Two Fat Ladies. We've been watching a lot of anime on videotape, laserdisc, and DVD: serial experiments lain, Compiler, Tenchi in Tokyo, Magical Project S, Saber Marionette J and Saber Marionette J Again, Video Girl Ai, Kimagure Orange Road, and Pokemon (yay! I am beginning to get these on DVD!). I'm sure I've forgotten some...we really like anime, as you can tell!

StutzieSo anyway, I haven't had any virtual pets watching TV or games with me...but various stuffed animals and beanies have! I am going to be putting up some pages about them at some point! Lots of photos to scan, though! Here is a photo of Stutz Beary-Bear, the "leader of the pack", to get you started. ::grin::
